DWR requiring course to gather shed antlers during spring

    By Faith Heaton Jolley

    February 12th, 2015 @ 3:36pm

THE GREAT OUTDOORS Gathering antler sheds is a hobby for many Utahns, and it is growing in popularity across the U.S. The Division of Wildlife Resources is now requiring participants to complete an online course before gathering sheds from Feb. 1 to April 15.

Elk and deer in Utah typically shed their antlers during the winter months, and that is when many people gather the shed antlers, according to a DWR news release. DWR officials said during the winter, the ground is often wet in the deer and elk environments and the habitats can be easily damaged.

Because its wet, it can be easily damaged, DWR law enforcement section chief Tony Wood said in the news release. Once the habitat is damaged, it can take years for it to recover.

The animals are also weaker and more stressed during the winter months because it is hard for them to move and find food, the news release said. In an effort to preserve the habitats and decrease stress to the animals, DWR officials are requiring Utahns to complete an online course before they can hunt shed antlers from Feb. 1 to April 15.

The mandatory online Antler Gathering Ethics course will help educate Utahns to prevent habitat damage. Once participants have completed the course, they can print out a certificate and must carry it with them while gathering shed antlers from Feb. 1 to April 15. If an adult takes young children shed hunting, the certificate will cover them as well, the news release said.

Participants can gather sheds throughout most of Utah with the certificate. However, because wildlife are so vulnerable this time of the year, many of the states wildlife management areas are closed in the winter and the spring to protect the animals, Wood said.

Anyone gathering antler sheds after April 15 does not need to complete the online course. Click here to take the free Antler Gathering Ethics course.

Microbes prevent malnutrition in fruit flies, and maybe humans, too

    - February 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Microbes, small and ancient life forms, play a key role in maintaining life on Earth. As has often been pointed out, without microbes, we'd die -- without us, most microbes would get along just fine.

Now, a study by scientists from the Florida campus of The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI) sheds significant new light on a surprising and critical role that microbes may play in nutritional disorders such as protein malnutrition.

Using fruit flies -- Drosophila melanogaster -- as a simple and easily studied stand-in for humans, these new findings advance our understanding of the fundamental mechanisms underlying microbial contributions to metabolism and may point to long-term strategies to treat and prevent malnutrition in general.

In the study, published February 12 in the journal Cell Reports, a team led by TSRI biologist William Ja showed that Issatchenkia orientalis, a fungal microbe isolated from field-caught fruit flies, promotes nutritional harvest that rescues the health and longevity of undernourished flies.

    Surprising Protein Harvest

Using a range of radioisotope-labeled dietary components such as amino acids (the components of proteins and the basic building blocks of the body) and sucrose (sugar) to measure the transfer of nutrients from food to microbe to fly, the study shows that the microbes first harvest amino acids directly from the fly's food sources and then transfer that protein to the fly -- by being eaten.

"Flies in the wild carry microbes to every surface they touch," said Research Associate Ryuichi Yamada, who spearheaded the study in the Ja lab. "As flies land on low-protein fruit, they deposit microbes, which take up and concentrate the available amino acids. By eating the microbes, flies gain a much needed source of dietary protein."

In flies that are fed nutrient-poor diets, this chain of events restores body mass and protein levels, essentially returning them to the pre-malnutrition profile of well-fed flies.

"Ryuichi and colleagues did a lot of painstaking work to carefully show that the simplest explanation for what was happening was correct," Ja said. "The direct influence of microbes on fly nutrition is often overlooked and may be relevant in numerous studies of host-microbe interactions."

Cody's, Sea Dog join forces in Clearwater

    - February 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    CLEARWATER

The familiar roadside signs are there. An aged, clapboard facade gives that roadhouse feel. That and the peanuts on the floor.

For the most part it's still the same Cody's Roadhouse, except this one has a Sea Dog craft brewery attached to it.

After a recent merger of the Clearwater outlets of the two chains, the marriage is working and could bring changes most notably Sea Dog craft beers to other Cody's franchises.

"Cody's has an aging clientele but we could use a little element of something new and exciting," said Mark Weber, manager with the restaurant chain. "This could be something unique."

Sea Dog Brewing Company opened its first Florida operations two years ago in an expansive building off U.S. 19 and Enterprise Road.

It was the first expansion for the Maine brewery into Florida. A location in Orlando opened next. While the craft beer was flowing, problems brewed inside. There were constant menu changes and the cavernous bar never seemed full.

There were struggles from the start partly because of the construction along U.S. 19, said Dan Bolduc, spokesman for Sea Dog in Florida.

The brewpub closed in May 2014 and reopened with the new concept Oct. 6 when the owners of Sea Dog, who own the building, bought the Cody's franchise and moved it about 50 feet.

A hallway filled with Sea Dog T-shirts and other items connects the tasting room with the roadhouse restaurant. Here there are no peanuts on the floor. There are rich leather couches and some TVs it's like a humidor meets a living room. Mug club mugs hang on the wall beneath the shiny beer taps.
