PRINCETON: Council to recommend construction code improvements to governor

    - February 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Princeton officials plan to tell the Christie administration how the state construction code can be improved in the wake of a fire at an AvalonBay apartment complex, the same company planning to build a development on Witherspoon Street.

Mayor Liz Lempert said at Tuesdays Princeton Council meeting that the administration is reviewing the code and seeking input from municipalities. The comment period ends March 1, she said.

She, Councilwomen Jenny Crumiller and Jo S. Butler and municipal staff will develop recommendations for the full council to consider at its meeting Feb.24 and then forward them to the state Department of Community Affairs.

Mayor Lempert has urged the administration to review the code before the DCA considers AvalonBays construction plans for a 280-unit development at the former Princeton Hospital. She has called for large multi-family buildings to have sprinklers throughout and concrete dividing walls.

An accidental fire broke out Jan.21 at an AvalonBay apartment complex in Edgewater, Bergen County. More than 500 people were left homeless by a blaze that tore through an apartment building.

Theyre still investigating exactly what happened with the fire there, and they cant be 100 percent sure that building was or was not built to code, Mayor Lempert said.

Municipal emergency management director Robert Gregory, in a response to a question from Ms. Crumiller, said he favored a change in regulations to require sprinklers in attics. He said that for most light-weight construction, there are sprinklers in egress ways and apartments.

Really what the sprinklers are for in that situation is life safety, he said.

Town engineer Robert V. Kiser, who has been monitoring the demolition, told council that the seven-story building on the site was brought down to grade level. Crews continue to work on the site.

Earlier in the meeting, Mayor Lempert briefed council on a phone conversation she had on Monday with AvalonBay Vice President Jon Vogel.

Professional organizers take stress out of decluttering

    - February 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A hodgepodge of stationery, envelopes, labels and staplers cluttered the cabinets and countertops at First United Methodist Church of Orlando last week.

Amid the sea of supplies stood professional organizer Jane Cole and director of youth ministry Justin Cox, who were trying to create order out of the chaos.

"These are 2014 pledge cards," Cox, 32, said as he leafed through an outdated stack. "So I think they go in the trash."

Cole, 51, stays especially busy this time of year as people seek help keeping New Year's resolutions to get organized.

She is one of 15 certified professional organizers in Florida. Some specialize in people with attention-deficit disorder, who tend to have chronic problems with organization. Others work with seniors planning to downsize, people about to relocate or bereaved families culling loved ones' belongings. A few confine themselves to digital organizing.

"The more responsibilities people have that pull them in different directions, the more difficult it is to stay organized," said Emily Green of the National Association of Professional Organizers.

Helping others get organized is a relatively young profession. The Board of Certification for Professional Organizers was created in 2007, but certification isn't required and Florida doesn't regulate practitioners.

Cole's path to the profession began when her widowed father died shortly after she graduated from the University of Central Florida. Then 22, she was distressed to find that her dad had left a jumble of documents for her to handle. She vowed to get her own paperwork in order so her heirs would have an easier time.

That led her to found Happy Home Organizing Solutions. She has spent the past 16 years paring piles of paperwork, combing through closets and culling kitchen clutter.

Typically, potential clients contact her after repeated failed attempts to get their homes or offices under control. Her largest demographic is women between 40 and 65, she said.

AP source: Weeks, Mariners agree to $2 million, 1-year deal

    - February 13, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

By TIM BOOTH AP Sports Writer

SEATTLE (AP) - After making additions throughout the offseason, the Seattle Mariners had one more move before the start of spring training.

Former All-Star Rickie Weeks and the Seattle Mariners have agreed to a $2 million, one-year contract, according to a person with knowledge of the negotiations. The person spoke to The Associated Press on Thursday on condition of anonymity because the deal is pending a physical. Weeks can earn another $2 million in performance bonuses plus additional award bonuses.

    ESPN first reported the agreement.

Weeks gives the Mariners additional versatility in the infield. In 121 games last season with Milwaukee, he hit .274 with eight home runs and 29 RBIs. He became a free agent after the Brewers voided his $11.5 million salary for 2015, a right the team had because Weeks failed to have at least 1,200 plate appearances in 2013-14, including 600 or more last year.

The addition of Weeks gives Seattle another potential right-handed bat for the lineup. But where he plays in the field, and how often, will be the question. Throughout his career with Milwaukee, Weeks has only played second base in the field and been a designated hitter a handful of time.

Weeks' skill as an infielder should make him a potential option as a backup at second base, shortstop and third base. Seattle is already set with its starters having All-Stars Robinson Cano at second base and Kyle Seager at third base. The shortstop job is expected to be settled between Chris Taylor and Brad Miller.

Weeks could also be an option to backup Logan Morrison at first base and potentially work in the outfield. The other utility player currently on Seattle's roster, Willie Bloomquist, is coming back from major knee surgery last season. Bloomquist is expected to be ready for spring training.

Weeks was an All-Star in 2011 with the Brewers, but his best season came in 2010 when he hit a career-high 29 home runs and drove in 83 runs. Where Weeks could be a boost is adding another right-handed bat to a lineup that was lefty heavy last season. The Mariners signed Nelson Cruz and traded for Justin Ruggiano in the offseason to add more balance to the batting order and Weeks is another option for manager Lloyd McClendon.

Seattle also agreed to a minor league contract with former Cleveland reliever Rafael Perez, who will report to big league spring training. Perez last pitched in the majors in 2012 with the Indians and made 338 relief appearances from 2006-12. Perez could fill Seattle's need for another left-hander in the bullpen, a role that Joe Beimel held last season. Beimel is a free agent.
