British band Architects plays sharp music in Manila

    - February 12, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

MANILA, PhilippinesTo a regular audience, Architects will sound no more than a fist forcing its way inside an ear. But to avid fans of this British band from Brighton, England, this group of fourSam Carter on vocals, Tom Searle on guitar and keyboard, Alex Dean on bass, and Dan Searle on drumsis the truth, akin to a mirror reflecting anything standing right in front of it.

Having released six studio albums and one split EP since 2006, Architects have explored numerous sounds that helped make the bands musicality evolve. And apparent enough, from the two-minute To the Death track of its debut album Nightmares to the seemingly candid but accurate Gravedigger of its 2014 LP Lost Forever // Lost Together, much has changed with Architects.

If there is one thing that remained steady in the bands run in the music industry, it is the downright honest lyrics that the quartet brings to the table that is constant and unfazed. And this was exactly what they brought to Manila when they played an hour and a half-long show at the SM North Edsa Skydome last Feb. 7a showcase of sharp words paired with above average mastery of the strings and the percussion.

    Brutal, casual

Carter was casual on stage while chanting gripping words from tracks Broken Cross, The Devil is Near, Dead Man Talking, Castles in the Air, and Alpha Omega. He wasnt even hopping aroundsomething you somehow expect from a band vocalist. But the message of each song they performed delivered the brutal tang expected of the Architects.

Whether its a matter of the heart or of the society, Architects can only sing honestly about anything.

In a plain black wife beater top (and dark denim jeans), Carter and the rest of the group continued to kill the stage with Naysayer, Youth is Wasted on the Young, These Colours Dont Run, The Distant Blue, and Gravedigger, among five others.

Carter dropped the F word a number of times that night, if not a hundred. And the audience just banged their head and body to the music while some ran and went infinite in a circle pit.

If anything, Architects felt like a fine fist bump to the earsthanks to the engulfing melody the band plays. And the screams were rather enthralling than intolerable.

Wangard's Brady and Water project moves forward

    - February 12, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Habhegger is gone, and the redevelopment of the riverfront land near Brady and Water is underway.

    Published Feb. 11, 2015 at 8:12 a.m.

The old Habhegger Wheel and Axle building at 1701 N. Water St., near Brady, is completely down now and Wangard's project to bring residences and retail to the space is underway, albeit a bit late.

The plan was to begin construction in 2014, with completion on the roughly 160 apartments and 6,600 square feet of retail space slated for later this year. There's been nothing so far to suggest it won't be finished on time.

Workers are on the site which Wangard has called "one of the most desirable sites in Milwaukee right on the Milwaukee River" today clearing and excavating.

Here's what Wangard's website for the project says about the development:

"The project sits at the convergence of two showcase urban corridors North Water Street and East Brady Street. As the visual terminus to Brady Streets west end, the property has the ability to become a major landmark building in the neighborhood and enhances Brady Street as one of the most successful retail and entertainment streets in the City."

A stretch of riverwalk is planned for the development, too.

The Wangard site continues: "By providing high-quality rental housing and retail amenities to the neighborhood, this development helps to improve the connectivity between the Water Street District and the Lower East Side, develops a pedestrian walkway along the south side of the underutilized Milwaukee River, and further enhances this area as one of the most dynamic urban neighborhoods of the City."

29-story apartment tower in works for Nye's Polonaise Room site

A plan calling for a 29-story apartment tower with thousands of square feet of retail space is in the works for what is now Nye's Polonaise Room in Northeast Minneapolis, though a nearby church is opposing the plans.

The 29-story, 189-unit apartment tower with several levels of parking and about 6,500 square feet of ground-floor retail space would require the demolition of two buildings, but two of the oldest structures, including the "Harness Shop" built in 1905, would be preserved, according to city documents.

The plans still need to move through the Minneapolis city approval process and win backing from the city's Heritage Preservation Commission, which is slated to discuss the proposal Tuesday.

The proposed plan isn't without resistance. Located on the same block as Nye's, Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church issued a statement to parishioners Sunday that outlined the church's resistance to the development.

The letter said experts have advised that the church will be harmed by a construction project of the proposed scope -- a risk the church's foundation, laid in 1857, can't take. The letter also listed obstructed views of the church, a 30-foot stone wall, shadows and density concerns as reasons for the church's opposition.

A Facebook group called "Save Nye's Polonaise," formed shortly after the Minneapolis institution announced plans to close in September, has nearly 9,000 likes.

Events are in the works to celebrate Nye's 65-year history, but nothing is official yet.

North Tyneside retail owner hits out over multi-million pound Silverlink expansion plans

    - February 12, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Store wars is threatening to break out over a developers expansion plans.

A retail centre owner is objecting to a rivals multi-million pound plan to expand the Silverlink complex, claiming the scheme puts North Tynesides regeneration at risk.

Property giant The Crown Estate has submitted a planning application to extend the Silverlink Shopping Park, potentially creating 50 new construction jobs.

The application details how the former Travelodge site opposite the park will be converted into a retail area, with 102,000sqft of space split into four units, the largest of which would be earmarked for a flagship Next Home and Garden store.

And a specific proposal in the application which has been welcomed by North Tyneside mayor Norma Redfearn would see The Crown Estate work with the council to deliver two training packages, creating almost 50 new construction jobs for local young people.

Now, however, NewRiver Retail owners of Wallsends Forum Shopping Centre and The Beacon Centre in North Shields has offered a stark warning that the regeneration of North Tynesides town centres will be put at risk if the Silverlink complex plans are approved.

NewRiver Retail said experts GL Hearn are predicting an annual loss of 1.1m and 3.5m in trade in Wallsend and North Shields respectively, should the plans be allowed to go forward.

The key town centre investors have made a detailed representation to the council urging them to think very carefully about the consequences of an expansion in out-of-town shopping for fragile and recovering local town centres.

The company believes that the Silverlink planning application should be refused when it comes up for decision on Tuesday, February 17.

Allan Lockhart, property director at NewRiver said: Taking spending power out of the town centres will reduce the willingness of retailers to open in Wallsend and North Shields.

    Remodeling would cost city $250K

    - February 12, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Joint Safety Services Building By KEVIN CORVO Wednesday February 11, 2015 9:43 AM View Larger

Hilliard City Council members are expected to authorize the city's share of a $350,000 remodeling project at the Joint Safety Services Building on Northwest Parkway, a facility shared by the Hilliard Division of Police and Norwich Township Fire Department.

Legislation was introduced at the Feb. 9 meeting of the public safety and legal affairs committee to authorize the expenditure of $250,000 for the city's share of the project.

Norwich Township would contribute about $100,000 toward the total cost and would oversee the project, police Chief Doug Francis said.

The agreement is expected to be approved at City Council's next regularly scheduled meeting at 7 p.m. Feb. 23 at the Hilliard Municipal Building, 3800 Municipal Way.

Francis said the project should be done by the end of September.

Francis said "a few things have changed" since the facility opened in 2009, but most of the changes center on the police side. Not the least of which was the relocation of police, fire and EMS dispatching in 2013 to the Northwest Regional Emergency Communications Center in Dublin.

The former dispatching area will be used for additional office space for support services, Francis said.

The building's interior also will be reconfigured.

Renovations include moving wall partitions to nearly double the size of the mayor's court, Francis said, as well as expand meeting rooms the township utilizes.

Terra Linda hospital wraps up ER revamp

    - February 12, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A trip to the emergency room in the middle of the night can be one of the most frightening experiences in a persons life. Lying in a hospital bed, hooked up to machines, uncertain what the diagnosis will be; it can be a nightmare for patients and their families.

Officials at Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Terra Linda hope to improve critical care and reduce waiting time with the hospitals new emergency room.

When completed, the new emergency department will have 18 treatment bays in 17,500 square feet nearly triple the size of the current facility.

The new ER is part of a remodeling project that includes a new parking structure. Hospital officials declined to discuss the cost of the project.

We are very pleased that one of the main improvements is space to allow us to take care of our patients even better, said Joe Fragola, Kaiser Permanente Regional Media Relations Specialist.

Fragola said the new emergency department, scheduled to open in the Spring, will feature two large trauma bays, a dedicated receiving area and entrance for patients with possible infectious disease or exposure to hazardous materials, including a decontamination area and isolation areas.

The new facilities also include specially designed rooms close to the waiting area, where less sick or injured patients can be seen quickly, cared for expertly and discharged much sooner without going into the more urgent treatment bays, Fragola said.

The new rooms will allow medical personnel to keep patient flow moving and focus on patients in greater need of urgent treatment.

The treatment rooms will be private and spacious to accommodate patients, families, physician, staff and important equipment. There will also be increased space in the ER for paramedics to do perform work when they deliver patients.

The entire design is patient/family centered and focused, Fragola said. The plan is for little to no waiting room time, patients will be roomed immediately. The care for those will less minor illness and injury will focus on seeing those patients right away, caring for them and discharging them efficiently.

    A Remodeling Project With Heart

    Our bathroom remodel is underway!

    http://www.splashingingrace.com

Remodelingthe sounds of hammering, sawing, and the sight of torn out drywall, a discolored sub-floor, exposed pipes, and a spaghetti of wiringthrill my heart. Do you doubt it? Its true. My husband and I have remodeled homes for over eighteen years and shivers of excitement fill my heart every time. I find it so satisfying to envision, design, and witness the entwining of ideas into a useful reality.

This week, we are leaping into a new task. Our main floor bathroom is getting a forty-year much overdue overhaul. Its pretty exciting to watch the process unfold. An even greater joy, however, comes from watching my husband and son work to tackle the project together. My husband instructs and our son follows. He rips out and our son discards the old. My husband corrects issues and our son adds to his learning.

    Lovely isnt it?

As I look into that torn up room, I wonder how thrilling it is for God to transform us and make us new. We may feel alarmed by the gutting and the shredding but He sees the pruning away of all that is rotting and useless. We may feel the shards that drive in and pierce our hearts, but Hes nurturing us in compassion, empathy, and love for others. We may feel the crushing weight of His hands, pushing and pulling, all while God shapes us into a more useful dwelling place for His glory. Im very glad that were loved that much, and that God isnt content to stand by and allow us to stay the same. I too often get comfortable rolling around in my ugly sin and content with my limited usefulness.

I suppose, just like any overhaul in life, messiness is a precursor to any beautification process. Im not sure how long our project will take this time, but if history acts as a good gauge, it may last one month or three. I am dancing with gratefulness that its started. Very soon, this whole demolition will fade to a mere memory, it will be behind us, and then well all be enjoying it. We will be left with something beautified and much more useful. The next bathroom project is waiting in line though. Its waiting around the corner, up a flight of stairs, and down our hall.

In a similar pattern of a previous line-up of undertakingsI cant help but realize that Im getting a sneak peek into something divine. God is at constant work in our lives too. Over the last few years, Ive felt the prying away of sin. Ive felt the cutting away of unfruitful habits and the gritty sanding away of the rough splintery places. I was content but God wasnt. I once thought that what I was living with was just fineeven tolerable. God, however, saw what was lurking below the surface in my marriage and in me. In all honesty, He exposed more than I wanted to see. I didnt want to view the dark ugliness. Id been living in a hidden mess for well over two years and instead of keeping His distanceGod has placed His loving hands all over my heart, mind, and spirit. Hes chiseled at our marital foundation, filled in the cracks, and continues to make the necessary repairs. God also reminds me, yet again, that hoping in the Lord and His workdoes renew our strength. We are now entering the rebuilding phase on a stronger foundation, and wowit feels so good.

I believe beauty and renewal are not far off for any of us. A masterpiece can arrive in Gods perfect timeif we give Him welcome access to our lives and hearts. His faithful attention, diligence, and creativity will re-create us like weve never dreamed possible. Sometimes, its difficult to think about such things when we are on the brink of marital or personal destruction though. As a neighboring demolition site, I want to remind you that God wont quite working before His mission is completeHe loves you too much. Its about time to let Him have at itdont ya think?
