OSHA, coroner investigating death of worker in Toccoa

    - February 11, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

TOCCOA - A construction worker died from a fall while working on a project at a Toccoa church Tuesday morning.

Toccoa Police Chief Tim Jarrell confirmed the death.

"At approximately 8:59 this morning the Toccoa Police Department, Stephens County ambulance service and Toccoa Fire Department responded to 475 Tugalo St., which is our First Baptist Church," Jarrell said. "We responded in reference to a work-related accident at the church's new construction site."

Jarrell provided some basic details of what happened.

"There was a worker on a steel beam who fell and appears to have suffered a head injury," Jarrell said. "He was pronounced deceased at the scene by the coroner's office."

The man's name has not been released yet, pending notification of his family.

The victim is a 35-year-old Hispanic male from the Gainesville area, Jarrell said.

"The incident is still under investigation," Jarrell said. "OSHA and the coroner's office are investigating, and the police department is supplying assistance as needed."

An autopsy to determine the cause of death will be performed at the Georgia Bureau of Investigation State Crime Lab in Decatur.

"We do not believe foul play is involved, however we investigate all deaths as if they are criminal until otherwise proven differently," Jarrell said.

VIDEO: United Utilities bosses blame heavy rain and weeds for Church Street West delays

    - February 11, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A VIDEO going behind the scenes of the delayed Church Street West sewer works in Radcliffe has been released by United Utilities.

Last month bosses at the water company confessed the 1.7 million scheme which saw the busy town centre road shut last July for an estimated eight months was not on schedule.

The Radcliffe Times revealed delays meant Church Street West would not reopen at the end of the 40-week period this March and could be shut for months more into the summer.

United Utilities has today released a video citing work to clear plants and erosion on the embankment due to heavy rain as the reasons for delays.

In the video, construction manager Lee Hall says: Initially before we started we had a survey done, and it found we had a lot of invasive species on the embankment; Himalayan Balsam, Japanese Knotweed and Giant Hogweed.

We had to clear this and have the ground treated on three separate occasions before we could come to work on the embankment.

Just before Christmas we had some erosion on the embankment due to heavy rainfall, and we had to carry out some emergency stabilisation repairs which stabilised the ground.

The works we are carrying out at the moment are adding to the stability of the slope.

Frustrated residents have faced traffic chaos since the closure, with a diversion through Blackburn Street and Spring Lane causing delays of up to an hour, and the large compound erected in front of shops means trade in the town centre is also struggling.

Bosses at United Utilities have refused to give a precise new reopening date for Church Street West but said they will update businesses and residents as soon as a date is known.

    Homeowners oppose new apartment construction

    - February 11, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    SPOKANE, Wash. -

More than 500 homeowners have signed a petition against a new apartment construction in the Wandermere neighborhood in North Spokane near Mead. The project is proposed near the intersection of Wandermere road and Elto Avenue. Right now there is a 17 and a half acre plot of land and 4 and half acres zoned as "Low Density" meaning the 354 unit apartment building being proposed would not fit zoning requirements. Several neighbors oppose the re-zoning, so much so that the Spokane County Planning Commission rejected the re-zoning proposal last Fall. "It was not a unanimous vote." Spokane County Commissioner Todd Mielke says. "Even some of the people who voted yes have contacted the board of county commissioners saying, that is not how I feel about this issue."

On Tuesday the Spokane County Board of Commissioners decided to re-visit the issue and hear from homeowners. "We want it to fit in the neighborhood, but it just doesn't fit." Tim Conley said who has lived in the Wandermere neighborhood for several years. "I don't think that anyone has really considered all the ramifications of putting that many people in that small of an area." Kirt Wilkinson says. He's lived in the neighborhood for more than 13 years and also has signed the petition. Neighbors are concerned that a high increase in traffic would be imminent and that the Mead School District would not be handle the influx of potential students and families moving in.

The construction is not something the school district is opposed to but Ned Wendle the Director of Facilities and Planning for Mead schools says new development is "always a challenge." Wendle says based on apartment complexes that are already in the Wandermere neighborhood a rough estimate would be about 40-70 new students the district could see based on the construction plans. Wendle says the rapid expansion is a concern but that the district will work with the county.

Spokane County Commissioners say they will consider input from the homeowners who live in the neighborhood on whether or not the 4.4 acre parcel should be re-zoned to fit the remaining 13 acres of land on the property.

More Kenyans to benefit from Shs.100m investment in clean water

    - February 11, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Procter & Gamble (P&G) hasalso announced an investment of 100 million shillings investment that will provide another 100 million liters of clean water to more than 100,000 Kenyan people in the coming year.

Through the CSDW program we will be expanding our school and health clinic work with CARE into Migori County in Western Kenya which has suffered a recent Cholera outbreak, said P&G Managing Director Iacopo Pazzi.

Pazzi added that the CSDW will also expand its partnership with S.A.F.E. Kenya to educate more people about water and health issues in the Coastal Region through community theatre programmes as well as ChildFund which will focus on households in Eastern Kenya who have unsafe drinking water from open sources.

Speaking upon receiving a donation of one million liters of clean drinking water, Nairobi City County Governor Dr. Evans Kidero said that donation would help address the current cholera outbreak in Mathare and Huruma and future emergencies among the communities that cause water in this particular settlement to be turbid.

I have instructed the County Executive for Health to work with Population Services Kenya to find the most optimal way of distributing the sachets to ensure maximum coverage and protect the children of this County from diarrheal illnesses, said Dr. Kidero.

Currently, of the about 3.6 million residents of Nairobi, only half have direct access to piped water. The rest obtain water from kiosks, vendors and illegal connections. Of the existing customers, about 40 per cent receive water on a 24-hour basis. Westlands, which has the highest number of its residents with access to tapped water in their dwellings, is at a low 34.5 per cent. Reliance on water vendors is at its highest Nairobi East and Nairobi West, which are at 22.2 per cent and 19.8 per cent, respectively.

P&G began providing clean drinking water in Kenya, Guatemala and Pakistan through powder technology that kills deadly viruses and bacteria and removes dirt, parasites and other pollutants, making contaminated water clean and drinkable. Since 2004, P&G Purifier of Water (formerly Pur) packets have been shared in more than 75 countries and the program has grown to include a network of more than 150 partners.

Scientists trying to purify used laundry water developed the technology that puts the power of a water treatment plant into a tiny packet. Today, the P&G Packets enable families in developing countries to make clean drinking water in 30 minutes.

The idea of billions of liters can be hard to comprehend, but when you meet the people whose lives have been changed by clean drinking water you understand just how important it is that we continue to invest in the future of Kenya through this program and brands like Always, Ariel and Pampers. Pazzi concluded.

P&G partnered with CARE Kenya to share clean drinking water with a 13-year-old boy named Boniface Otieno and his family. At his school in Bondo, Kenya, the 13 year old helps teach fellow students to use the P&G Purifier of Water Packets and about the importance of hand washing and proper sanitation. Through the support of P&G and CARE Kenya, children like Boniface Otieno became agents of change who take what they learned at school back home to transform the health and lives of their communities.
