    Contemporary kitchen countertops combine materials.

Im of the opinion that every space needs some sparkle, something jazzy and intriguing to give it depth, dimension, and polish.

Considering its one of the most important rooms in a home and a space buyers are looking to for that extra oomph, the kitchen is no exceptionand neither are the countertops.

Im talking some major pizzazz here, but sometimes, investing more on amazing finishes just makes so much more sense.

So heres a quick piece of advice: save on inexpensive cabinetry if it helps the budget, and seriously consider splurging on these chic and yummy finishes to boost the value of your home and for all the wow factor and pop your kitchen can handle

    STAINLESS

Not just for commercial kitchens anymore, stainless steel can take abuse from just about any kitchen utensil, even the heat from hot pots and pans. Overtime, hairline scratches and blemishes instill it with a worn, lived-in patina.

Like their counterpart appliance friends, stainless steel countertops are popular because they work well in both traditional and contemporary kitchens. They can dent occasionally however, so care must be taken with heavy objects... but overall, theyre a durable and easily maintainable option.

Vic family shattered by meagre sentence

    - February 11, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A man is set to be sentenced for the murder of his interior designer partner Stuart Rattle.

The family of a man murdered by the lover they comforted after his death have had their grief compounded by the sentence he's received.

Michael Anthony O'Neill maintained a charade that Stuart Rattle was ill in bed for five days, and even made him cups of tea, after he bludgeoned and strangled his partner with a dog leash.

Victorian Supreme Court judge Elizabeth Hollingworth on Wednesday jailed O'Neill for 18 years - with a minimum of 13 - for murdering Mr Rattle then later setting their apartment on fire.

O'Neill, 48, originally claimed his business partner and lover had died in the fire but confessed to the killing after police found holes in his story.

Mr Rattle's family were "shattered" by the jail term on Wednesday.

"Stuart was at the peak of his career, his brilliance was an inspiration to many," his sister, Katrina Lewin, said outside the court.

She said he was a talented, charming and generous man whom they miss every day.

"We thought coming into this today that the sentence would never be enough to compensate adequately to represent Stuart's life," Mrs Lewin said outside court.

    "It's a waste of a beautiful life."

Fire damage keeps Cha Chis closed; owners hope to re-open in months

    - February 11, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Rather than the smell of taco meat, rice, and beans, the smell of smoke and moisture lingered in the air at Cha Chis Mexican Grill Tuesday.

It could be weeks, or months, before the scent of freshly-made food fills the restaurant again.

The eatery closed last week after a fire tore through the historic downtown building next door along Third Street. The fire appeared to have started in the attic and was contained before spreading to the building owned by Cha Chis owners Roman Freyre and his wife, Natalia Istrati.

The building sustained extensive water and smoke damage to the two upstairs apartments and business, Freyre said, meaning the timeline for reopening is unclear.

For now, theyre just relieved no one was hurt and their restaurant, which they opened downtown in December 2011, was spared.

Were thankful the fire department knew what they were doing, Freyre said.

It was a little after midnight last Friday morning when Freyre was in the kitchen preparing for the nights weekend rush. He looked out the window and noticed it was foggy outside or at least he thought. A step outside proved different. Police had begun to gather. Fire trucks were on their way.

The reality of the situation hit him and soon he was rushing upstairs with keys in hand to get any apartment tenants out of the building.

But I have like 20 keys, he said.

An officer had followed him and was knocking on the door as Freyre fumbled to find the right key. No one was answering.

    House destroyed by fire

    - February 11, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A house being remodeled at 607 East Main Street was destroyed by fire last Thursday. A passerby noticed smoke coming from roof vents about 9 a.m. and called 911. The unoccupied home is owned by Tom Burk, and an extensive remodeling project was almost complete.

Working in single digit temperatures, firemen from Belmond and Goodell poured over a hundred thousand gallons of water on the blaze, but it was stubborn and would not go out easily. At one point the basement was filled with four to five feet of water.

An official said the fire was probably burning for a long time before smoke finally started to show. Firemen broke out basement windows when flames were seen there. Other firemen entered the front door but were called back because of the weakened condition of the floor. The flames burned through the main floor, the ceiling and the roof, and the aerial ladder truck (above) poured about 1,000 gallons per minute through the gaping hole in the roof. Other firemen broke out the brand new windows on the sides of the house and sprayed water through those openings. Firemen stayed on the scene until about 3 p.m.

An insurance investigator visited the house Monday but could not determine the cause of the blaze, an official said. Another fire expert was being called to examine the home. It is considered a total loss.
