Illinois city mocked by Letterman in '99 plots cold revenge – Quincy Herald-Whig | Illinois & Missouri News, Sports

    - February 8, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

KANKAKEE, Ill. (AP) - High school students in a city that David Letterman lampooned as an awful place to live are plotting some tongue-in-cheek revenge, more than 15 years later.

The late night TV talk show host piled on in 1999 after Places Rated Almanac called Kankakee and its surrounding area in northern Illinois the worst metropolitan area to live in the U.S. and Canada. One of his famous Top 10 lists suggested area slogans, including "We put the 'Ill' in Illinois," and "You'll come for our payphone - you'll stay because your car's been stolen."

To spruce things up, Letterman sent Kankakee two gazebos, which the students plan to turn into a rocking chair to commemorate Letterman's upcoming retirement.

"I think we know that Dave likes a good joke," Barbara Wells, the area's board of education president, told the (Kankakee) Daily Journal. "So, I thought he'd like this. And I like seeing the kids get so involved. This will be one class they tell their kids and grandchildren about."

A spokeswoman for CBS' "Late Show with David Letterman" said crews plan to film the project next month and to air the footage on the show.

Removing them has become a two-semester project. Students have demolished one gazebo next to an old train depot and hope to do the same with the other in a nearby park. Much of the wood has rotted, though students saved wood for building the chair.

Although residents were irked by Kankakee's lowly ranking and the buzz it got, many grew to appreciate the gazebos. Couples got married in the white, wooden structures, and some residents are unhappy with their removal.

While working on the project, the students are also raising money for new gazebos, hoping it'll help show how their community about 50 miles south of Chicago turned a national embarrassment into a positive message.

The project's organizers admit that part of their motivation was to bring renewed attention to the improvements the city has made since Letterman's gag.

Junior Sam Foster told the newspaper he's enjoying the class.

Students Finally Get Back at Letterman for Ragging On Their Town

    - February 8, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Back in 1999, the city of Kankakee, Illinois was deemed the worst metropolitan area to live in in both the United States and Canada by Places Rated Almanac. David Letterman had some fun with that, with a top ten list of slogan suggestions for Kankakee County. Slogans included We put the Ill in Illinois, We also put the annoy in Illinois, and Ask about our staggering unemployment rate.

Well, a little over 15 years later, students in Kankakee are getting their revenge on Letterman and The Late Show will be documenting their progress.

See, back then Letterman actually sent the town two gazebos to spruce up the place, and now students are demolishing both and using the wood to make Letterman a rocking chair for his impending retirement.

The town has mixed feelings about the gazebos being taken down, and the people behind the project say they want to draw attention to how much better their city is now compared to when Letterman teased them.

And yes, CBS cameras will be documenting the whole thing next month and the footage will air on The Late Show.

Ten Point Coalition gets help from unexpected source

    - February 8, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

INDIANAPOLIS - Through the barbed wired fences at the prison in Pendleton, incarcerated criminals have a message for the young men caught up in a life of crime in Indianapolis.

They're getting that message out through a letter and book called "Prison is for Real," which they recently sent to the Ten Point Coalition, a group that works in Indianapolis neighborhoods with a mission to stop violent crime.

According to Ten Point's leader, Rev. Charles Harrison, the 20 page booklet is real talk about what prison is like and how the men got there.

"These are individuals with long prison terms," explains Harrison, thumbing through the pages.

One of the authors is 18 years old and serving a sentence of life without parole. He writes in the book, "As a teen, I never thought I'd die in prison, but that's my reality now."

"Never getting out. I think that's a message. It's a good message," says another Ten Point member, Darryl Jones.

It's a message the booklet's authors hope the Ten Point Coalition will bring to the young men they're meeting on their patrols in some of the city's most crime ridden areas.

"If just one reads it and one gets something out of it, you save one," said Jones.

Jones doesn't have to read the book to know what prison's like. He's already been there eight times since he was 23.

"Prison is a whole new world. Prison is another life for you," he explains. "I don't want to see these kids go through that."

An out-of-the-box idea to fund transportation projects gains traction

    - February 8, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The sophomore congressman from Maryland isnt given to pauses in his monologue, but this time he ponders for a second or two when asked how he came up with an idea to yank America out of transportation quicksand.

I looked at all the factors a while ago and said, This is where were going to go. People may not realize it, but they will, says Rep. John Delaney (D).

    They realize it now.

Just as success has a thousand fathers, the concept of using almost $2trillion in offshore corporate cash to bail out the beleaguered federal trust fund for roads, bridges and transit seems to have lots of parents on Capitol Hill these days.

The number one source that is being talked about is this repatriation of funds, House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee Chairman Bill Shuster (R-Pa.) told the U.S. Conference of Mayors in January.

A couple of years ago, however, when the then-freshman congressman from Potomac began pushing the concept, it took a while before bipartisan support more than 40 members from each party emerged.

When we started talking about this two years ago, people were like, Whats that idea? People viewed it as a real out-of-the-box idea, Delaney says, and now everyones talking about it. The presidents making references to it, Speaker [John] Boehner talked about it, and you hear that Rand Paul and Barbara Boxer are thinking about a bill.

In fact, when Boxer and Paul announced their proposal, the unlikely marriage between the liberal California Democratic senator and the Libertarian-leaning Kentucky Republican senator drew attention as much for style as for content.

Theres a tremendous amount of momentum in the Congress and the administration converging toward this idea, Delaney says. Theres a real natural deal to be done there between Democrats and Republicans.

He figures its picking up steam because there is a total absence of other ideas to deal with this problem, other than lets raise the gas tax.
