Following the approval of the latest resolution with FGM Architects by the Edwardsville City Council, residents can expect a clearer picture of whats to come with the public safety building and the fire station on the SIUE campus.

At the last joint Public Safety and Public Safety Facilities Committee meetings, both recommended approval of the resolution.

Selected from a pool of candidates in August, FGM Architects has been working with the city through the visioning process, budgeting, programming and preparation of pre-construction documents for the joint police and fire station to be located at South Main Street and Schwarz Street and a fire station on the SIUE campus at Northwest University Drive.

This latest resolution authorizes the mayor to enter into a professional services agreement with FGM Architects. Services include complete design and construction bid documents, civil and construction engineering, assistance with pre-qualification of contractors, construction bidding and oversight through project completion for the SIUE fire station and the joint police and fire station.

Alderman Janet Stack said the resolution will help the city get firm budget numbers.

The projected budget is currently between $16 to $18 million for both buildings.

A motion and second were made and the resolution was unanimously approved.

In other business, the council approved a second professional services agreement with FGM Architects, this one in relation to the splash and play park to be located at the rear of the joint police and fire station property.

The resolution will contract FGM to complete the design, engineering, bidding and oversight of the spray and play park.

A motion and second were made and the resolution was approved with only Alderman Barb Stamer voting against it.

Public safety facility project moves forward

The Museum of Modern Art and MoMA PS1 announce New York and Madrid-based Andrs Jaque/Office for Political Innovation as the winner of the annual Young Architects Program (YAP). The program, now in its sixteenth edition, offers emerging architects the opportunity to design a temporary, outdoor installation within the courtyard at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, New York. The installation will serve as the backdrop for the Warm Up summer music series and will provide shade, seating, and water while addressing environmental issues related to sustainability and recycling.

Selected from five finalists, the design by Andrs Jaque, called COSMO, will open at MoMA PS1 in late June. COSMO will be made with customized irrigation components and is engineered to filter and purify 3,000 gallons of waterone cycle will take four days and will repeat continually to further purify the water. Each time a cycle is complete, the stretched-out plastic mesh at the core of the construction will glow. Jaques concept addresses the statistic put forth by the United Nations estimating that, by 2025, two thirds of the global population will live in countries that lack sufficient water.

Relying on off-the-shelf components from agro-industrial origin, an exuberant mobile architecture celebrates water-purification processes and turns their intricate visualization into an unusual backdrop for the Warm Up sessions.

Klaus Biesenbach, MoMA PS1 Director and MoMA Chief Curator at Large adds Last year Hy-Fi, a nearly zero carbon footprint construction by The Living, raised awareness of ecological and climate change. This year COSMO continues to do so, addressing the issue of increasingly scarce water supplies worldwide in a successful and innovative way.

The other finalists for this years MoMA PS1 Young Architects Program were brillhart architecture (Jacob Brillhart), Erin Besler, The Bittertang Farm (Michael Loverich) and Studio Benjamin Dillenburger (Benjamin Dillenburger and Michael Hansmeyer). An exhibition of the five finalists' proposed projects will be on view at MoMA over the summer, organized by Pedro Gadanho, curator, with Leah Barreras, department assistant, Department of Architecture and Design, MoMA.

MoMA PS1 Announces Andrs Jaque/Office for Political Innovation as Winner of the 2015 Young Architects Program

On a January weeknight, Halyna Charron was finishing preparations of a dinner of spinach pie, pork and tabouli salad.

Her husband, the Rev. Jason Charron, and all but the youngest of their six daughters, who range from 2 to 13 years old, pitched in at various times, slicing vegetables and setting the table in their Carnegie home. In between, one daughter played piano in the living room, another a brief video game in the TV room.

When they gathered at the table, they stood for a dinner blessing and faced a display of icons as the parents led the children in chanting prayers in English and Ukrainian.

During the meal, the parents asked the daughters what they learned in school, and the girls talked of homework and upcoming tests.

After dinner, Father Charron buttoned up his black cassock and headed out to do a house blessing in Upper St. Clair for a family of parishioners a January tradition for Ukrainian Catholics. He and two daughters, brought along for the ride, gathered with the host family in their dining room for a prayer. The whole group then processed up and down stairs as Father Charron chanted blessings and sprinkled each room with holy water.

It was another day in the life of balancing work, marriage and family.I cant be a good pastor if Im a lousy dad or lousy husband, said Father Charron, 38.

Thats not the typical challenge for a Catholic priest.

But throughout North America, the ranks of married priests have slowly been growing in Eastern Catholic parishes such asHoly Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church in Carnegie, where Father Charron became pastor last year.

Eastern Catholics are now preparing for more married priests. A historic decree last year by Pope Francis lifted a generations-old ban on married priests serving Eastern Catholic rites in the Americas and Australia.

Eastern Catholics, estimated around 600,000 in the United States, are barely 1 percent of the nations Catholic population. But they are some of its most diverse members, with distinct heritages in Eastern Europe, the Middle East and beyond. They are loyal to papal authority and Catholic dogma while practicing ancient liturgies and traditions similar to those of Orthodox and other Eastern churches.
