CHIPPEWA FALLS Construction of single-family and multi-family homes fell sharply in 2014 in Chippewa Falls, but the number of permits issued and revenue collected increased.

Paul Lasiewicz, city building inspector, released his annual report last week, which shows there were seven new single-family homes built, along with eight new multi-family units.

In comparison with the 15 new structures built last year, there were 29 new houses, duplexes or apartment buildings constructed in the city in 2013, including 19 multi-family units. The increase in multi-family structures is a noticeable trend in the city; there were no multi-family complexes constructed in 2011, but eight were built in 2012.

The largest of the multi-family homes a 12-unit complex on Sunshine Circle adjacent to U.S. 53 is valued at $825,000. Four eight-unit complexes also were built, each at a value of $600,000.

The seven new homes built in 2014 have a combined value of $1.6 million. In comparison, the 10 new homes built in 2013 had a combined value of $1.35 million. While the number of new homes built did fall from 2013, it is still up from the four single-family homes built in 2011 and six new homes in 2012.

There were 314 total building permits issued in 2014, up slightly from 304 last year and 302 in 2012. Total fees collected on those 314 permits were $107,600, up from $91,996 in 2013 and $78,859 in 2012.

The total revenue collected by the city inspectors office including building, electrical, heating and plumbing permits jumped to $169,619 from $146,198 last year.

A $5 million expansion at Southview Elementary, 615 A St., was the largest project completed in the city last year. The district added a 24,700-square-foot wing onto the school.

Tied for the largest project in 2014 was the EOG Resources sand processing plant at 1425 Highway S in the northeast corner of the city. The company constructed a new building to store wet and dry sand at a cost of $5 million.

The remainder of the top 10 projects in 2014 were:

Home Minister Rajnath Singh promises security to churches

    - February 7, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

As Christians took to streets of Delhi over recent attacks on churches, Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday promised to step up security at their religious places amid his assertion that any discrimination on the basis of religion will not be tolerated.

He said an impartial inquiry has been ordered into the recent incidents as a delegation of Christian leaders met him to say that five churches were attacked in the last two and a half months in Delhi and holy relics and holy communion were destroyed but police was doing nothing.

The home minister told the delegation that the government would not tolerate any discrimination on the basis of caste, colour or religion, a Home Ministry official said.

Singh also instructed Delhi Police Commissioner B S Bassi to make proper arrangements for the security of churches and other places of worship, he said.

The delegation gave a memorandum to him demanding security for Christians and their places of worship.

Meanwhile, members of the community staged a major protest in the city on the eve of assembly polls, accusing the government of inaction and wondered why Prime Minister Narendra Modi was silent on the issue.

Police detained over 200 protesters from outside the Sacred Heart Cathedral in central Delhi when they tried to march towards the residence of the Home Minister in a high security area.

A number of priest and elderly persons including women were picked up police and forced into buses. Some protesters, carrying placards, squatted on the road demanding protection to the churches.

Father Dominic Emanuel, a senior leader of Delhi Catholic Archdiocese and a number of elderly persons were seen picked up police and forced into buses. Some protesters, carrying placards, sought justice to the community and protection to the churches.

"We have detained the protesters and they have been taken to Parliament Street police station. They did not have permission to protest outside the church and we cannot allow them to protest on public roads," Joint Commissioner of Police Mukesh Meena told reporters.

Armstrong workers going back to school

    - February 7, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Armstrong County is sending five maintenance workers back to school.

The county is spending $2,000 to send three public works employees and two jail maintenance workers to Lenape Technical School to learn how to repair heating and cooling systems, said Dan Lucovich, director of human resources.

If our workers know how to do this, we should be able to save money by doing repairs in-house instead of going out for contractors, Lucovich said. Any heating or cooling repair is expensive, so we figure the county will stand to save money by having our guys trained to handle it.

Public Works Director Roy Carney said roughly half of all maintenance issues are related to problems with ventilation systems in county buildings. Carney, who's trained in heating, ventilation and air conditioning system repair, now handles most of that kind of work for the county.

While most of the maintenance workers have a basic understanding of HVAC repair, Carney said he wants to make sure they are all properly trained.

It's really hard for me to get out and fix every issue, especially because we have so many buildings, Carney said. Having more people properly trained means we'll be able handle more issues quickly. It's really a good investment.

It marks the second time the county has sent its maintenance employees back to school. Last year, several attended Lenape Technical School to brush up on their electrical wiring skills, Lucovich said.

We're really fortunate to have a great educational resource like Lenape Technical School in the county, said Armstrong County Commissioners Chairman Dave Battaglia said. When we can use our own educational facilities and do our own repairs, everybody wins.
