The cities of Port Moody, Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam are assessing damage caused by chafer beetles and the birds and animals that eat them.

Lawns and grass fields torn up by crows and raccoons in search of chafer beetles could cost thousands of dollars to repair, according to Port Coquitlam and Coquitlam, with Port Moody and School District 43 still assessing the damage.

"There is a lot of damage all over the place. We are doing a full audit. It is very extensive," commented Raul Allueva, general manager of parks and recreation for the city of Coquitlam.

Healthy lawns and sports fields appear to be untouched, with most of the damage confined to areas where grass is in poor shape.

School District 43 reports little to no damage and Port Moody is still in the midst of an audit, although staff say the problem has worsened since last year and Port Coquitlam has put a price to repairing chafer beetle-infected fields in its jurisdiction.

Repairs to the PoCo cemetery, where Terry Fox is buried, will cost $104,200, including the re-establishment of a vigorous lawn, and repairs to other areas will cost about $15,000.

In addition to the cemetery, there are 11 sites in that city with low level chafer beetle damage, six sites with medium level damage and two sites with high level damage where the site is completely disturbed and bare soil is exposed.

"Given the nature of these areas and the size of the areas impacted, we will be managing them through a combination of top-dressing, over-seeding and nematode applications," Todd Gross, PoCo's parks and services manager stated in an email.

Many homeowners are also seeing damage to their property, according to Art Knapp owner Wim Vander Zalm who has been dispensing advice on how to deal with the pest.

Cities tallying up the cost of fixing grass wrecked by chafer beetles

Bob Harrison and his wife, Mandy, have lived in their Rochester Avenue home for 30 years, having fallen in love with the view that stretches all the way to the Fraser River, the flat, expansive back yard and the creek flowing beside the house.

Never in those 30 years did they expect to be dealing with a pest the likes of the chafer beetle.

In the past few months the Harrisons have watched their carefully tended lawn turn into an apocalyptic battle scene the crows pecking away at great chunks of grass, turning it into bubbled balls of turf, and the raccoons laying waste to entire swaths, nosing the sod up and rolling it back with nary a root in sight.

"We had a beautiful lawn here for years and years," Harrison said, shaking his head as he surveyed the damage in his back yard.

And after months of trying to battle the chafer beast, Harrison is throwing up his hands in defeat.

"What do we do with this? It's totally ruined," he said of the more than 6,000 sq. ft. yard.

The couple's grandson did a bit of online research for them and came up with coyote urine as a possible antidote, so Harrison picked up a small bottle from an outdoors store in Bellingham. He sprinkled some on a test patch of grass and tied a urine-soaked rag to a stake that he set out in another area.

"That night the raccoons came back, sniffed around it didn't bother them at all," Harrison said. "The next night the crows came back as well."

Virginia Eadie never needed the city's help, but she got some shovel service anyway.

"I was virtually in shock," Eadie said.

An Omaha plow driver missed the mark, dumping dirt and grass all over her driveway Monday night.

Eadie called the city to complain and then called 7 Can Help.

"She was telling me it's our responsibility for the sidewalk and I said, 'How can we be responsible for what your trucks have been doing?'" Eadie said.

Moments after KETV NewsWatch 7 arrived to record the damage, a city plow drove by and cleaned much of it up. The crew said that situations like this happen sometimes.

"That much snow, you really can't feel the curb from your plow so they run up and scalp it," the crewman said.

"We really appreciate the attention and the service, and I think your coming had a bearing on it and it could be too that we called the mayors hotline that might've also sped the process up a little bit," Eadie said.

The city said it will put sod where the plow tore up the grass, but not until the spring when the ground thaws out.

RANGERS fans today called on the under-fire Ibrox board to stand down en masse - and save the Glasgow club the cost of staging an EGM.

Dave King has declared he is "absolutely certain" he will receive enough backing to take control at his boyhood heroes at a general meeting.

South Africa-based King needs to get the support of 51 per cent of the shareholders in order to oust the current despised regime.

Gers directors who are desperately trying to cling onto power have been examining whether the "notice is properly constituted".

Senior officials at the SPFL Championship club are legally required to announce a date for the EGM by tomorrow at the latest.

But Chris Graham of the Union of Fans, an amalgamation of the six main supporters' bodies, believes there is an easy way around that.

He has called on James Easdale, Barry Leach, Derek Llambias and chairman David Somers to resign and save Rangers the money.

He said: "The sensible thing to do given the level of backing that clearly exists for Dave King would be for the board to stand down.
