Crews work to seal up storm sewer work on Highway 85 project

    - February 7, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

DEADWOOD With the power pole stabilized and standing on its own, retaining wall work finished and the first few sections of pipe placed on the Cemetery Street storm sewer outfall portion of the U.S. Highway 85 Reconstruction project in Deadwood, project officials said Tuesday that they hope to finish up at Cemetery Street next week, with plans to move to Corral Street and yet another storm sewer outfall and bit of retaining wall work next on the agenda.

Construction crews continue to work their way back toward Highway 85 from Whitewood Creek in the latest storm sewer outfall and retaining wall project on Cemetery Street.

Work on the current outfall requires a complete closure of Cemetery Street from Highway 85 to Whitewood Creek, as crews work to install a larger storm sewer pipe, beginning at the creek and laying pipe from the creek back to the road.

All of this work is being done in preparation for the highway project, before they start tearing up road this spring, said Deadwood Public Works Director Ron Green.

When the two storm sewer outfalls are complete and new pipe installed, contractors will simply tie them into the new pipe running along the highway. The pipes, which ultimately drain into Whitewood Creek are currently not big enough, necessitating their replacement.

The recent completion of the storm sewer outfall and retaining wall work in the parking lot across from Lead-Deadwood Regional Hospital marked the third major project completion for Phase I of Deadwoods Highway 85 project.

Two rock cuts one at the corner of Thunder Cove and one near Mollmans Corner are also complete.

Work on a retaining wall in the vicinity of Thunder Cove and the Mickelson Trail are slated begin in late February. While the trail currently sits well below the road, reconstruction will bring the trail and the road to nearly the same grade, in preparation for the installation of a new curb and sidewalk.

Details regarding a temporary pedestrian access route and detour during this portion of the project are forthcoming. The Mickelson Trail work and Corral Street work are likely to be done simultaneously.

Come April, Phase II of the project will begin in earnest, bringing with it corresponding traffic delays.

Church to unveil fully accessible playground

    - February 7, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Students in teacher Amy Hofstetter's pre-k class tie prayer ribbons to the fence of a new playground at Stepping Stones Trinity United Methodist Church Preschool on Wednesday,

It was someone running a red light and his daughter's vehicle being T-boned that left her with a traumatic brain injury and confined to a wheelchair.

Since then, for Dan Johnson, senior pastor at Trinity United Methodist Church in northwest Gainesville, providing accessibility for everyone has become personal.

The church has made efforts to become fully accessible for all and, at 12:15 Sunday, a dedication ceremony will culminate three years of research and construction and the completion of a fully accessible, inclusive playground on the church's property.

Most of us tend to assume that other people are just like us and that's where you run into problems, the Rev. Johnson said.

Meeting the Americans With Disabilities Act standards, the playground will make available to the entire community an outdoor adventure for disabled and abled children to come together, along with their parents.

The only one of its kind in North Central Florida, the playground features a Noah's Ark and Bible verses on signs in Braille. There's also a Crooked House Chapel with specially designed wider doorways.

A steel drum that looks like a lady bug sits on the artificial turf installed especially for crawlers and new walkers. The engineered mulch around the attractions is meant to remove barriers for wheelchairs.

A Wheelchair Gondola has been installed so that all children can swing together.

Trinity Director of Communications Kelly Ping has watched the integration occur.

Metro Church Closer To Being Complete After Numerous Donations

    - February 7, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    OKLAHOMA CITY -

After years of deterioration, a metro church is now one step close to redemption.

News 9 first aired the story about the Teepee Church more than a year ago. Now with the help of countless donations, the pastor is sharing good news.

News 9's Justin Dougherty went back to the Teepee Friday.

"And I will fill this temple with glory says the Lord of hosts, the silver is mine and the gold is mine says the Lord of hosts. The glory of this ladder temple shall be greater than the former," said Pastor Terry Ward, of the Teepee Church, when reading from his favorite Bible verse.

Whether you're passing by or live in the neighborhood, Pastor Terry Ward knows his Tepee Church has been an eye sore and it was on him to open the door to its salvation.

"To see this building in the shape that it was in I know it bothered them and it bothered me. But there was nothing I could do about it," said Ward.

Until, all the silver and gold came rushing in like the rain through the church's roof.

"Oh, I was just floored," said Ward.

Contractors donated their time, roofers donated their effort, and someone, who remains anonymous, donated $50,000.
