Angies List: Why Drywall Isnt A Great DIY Project

    - February 6, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) There are tons of home improvement projects that lend themselves to doing it yourself.

But as Angies List finds, theres one job that doesnt.

Painting and wallpapering are popular DIY home improvement projects, but they can quickly become complicated if your walls arent in good shape. For most homes, that means your drywall needs to be a flat, even canvas that will easily accept your new paint or wallpaper.

DIY projects can be a lot of fun but, honestly, drywall is a lot harder than it looks, said Angie Hicks of Angies List. Its heavy material, takes lots of tools. Its really best left to the professionals.

Even small drywall repair jobs can get messy and complicated but those jobs can be DIY-ed especially if youre handy. But finishing a basement or other room with no drywall in place or installing new drywall to repair damaged walls is another story.

The reason why its not a good DIY job is that if you dont know what you are doing its going to look pretty bad in the end product, said drywall contractor, Robert Morrison. A professional knows how to install it especially in a whole house. If you go to try to do a whole house, a whole basement, it could take you days. Professional could do a house this size in a day, him and a couple of other guys.

Hanging the drywall, which can weigh 80 pounds and generally takes a three-person crew, is just step one of a four-step process.

Next comes mudding, taping and sanding, all very detailed and necessary to provide that flat, even canvas.

For a 1214 room it will take a professional about three or four hours to hang a room that size and a few days to finish it and get it ready for paint, said drywall contractor Andy Ferguson.

For a 1214 room a DIY project, it could probably turn into two weeks, if not a month, pretty quickly, he added.

Construction continues on new Boys and Girls Club

    - February 6, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

MOSES LAKE - The windows are in at the new Boys and Girls Club, and interior insulation should be going up by the end of the week. "Things are progressing," said club Executive Director Brant Mayo, but no completion date has been announced.

The last exterior windows were going in Monday morning on the new clubhouse, located next to Park Orchard Elementary, 417 N. Paxson Dr. Electrical, plumbing and heating-cooling contractors are on site this week, with drywall installation scheduled to start next week, Mayo said.

At roughly 10,700 square feet, the building is about twice the size of the existing facility, Mayo said.

Once the drywall is in, the project moves on to installing doors and cabinets, finishing the lighting and concrete floors, installing the interior windows and interior fixtures like water fountains. Landscaping will be completed in the spring, Mayo said.

The biggest room, the game and activity room, takes up most of one side of the building. The building also includes an art room along with a space for teens, targeted at middle-school students.

There's a learning center for the homework program. A meeting room that can be rented by community groups is just off the lobby. There's also a small kitchen.

Most of the equipment going into the new building will be new too, Mayo said in an earlier interview, and the staff may have to be expanded to accommodate more kids and bigger space.

Kids at the club will have access to the computer lab at Park Orchard after school, along with the school gym and cafeteria, Mayo said. Park Orchard students will have access to the Boys and Girls Club building during the school day, when the club is closed, he said.

The club also will have access to the school's play fields, its playground, tether ball and basketball courts, and Harrison K. Dano Park next door, Mayo said. "There have been some really good partnerships," he said.

"It's going to change the organization for the better," Mayo said, offering outdoor space for kids, something that's not available at the current downtown site.

Lenape students get learn by doing education building house

    - February 6, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

It all started as a pile of lumber, but within the next two months, it will be someone's home.

After 16 months of work, Lenape Technical School's carpentry and environmental control students are putting the final touches on a 930-square-foot, three-bedroom modular home they built as a class project.

There are things in the classroom you can't simulate, so we decided doing is the best way of learning, teacher Rick Heltion said. We want to give our students a true-life scenario.

It is the third student-built house supervised by the school's industrial arts department.

Carpentry teacher Nathan Stairs said the students are finishing drywall installation and plan to begin painting in the next several weeks, before installing cabinetry and counters in the bathroom and kitchen.

Some of these kids working on this project have never swung a hammer in their entire life, so we're starting at the first step with a lot of them, Stairs said. I show them how to do something once and they just take off and do the rest of the work.

Before building the house, students work from plans to write up an estimate of labor and materials for each job to complete the house.

Students built the house's framing, flooring and installed electrical, heating, cooling and plumbing systems, Heltion said.

Just like a real construction company, the students must have their work inspected by licensed building inspectors. Whenever the inspector spots a problem, it's up to the students to fix it before the project continues.

Not everyone is going to leave here and become a contractor, but they will know enough to work on their own homes, Stairs said.

County begins clearing lava near transfer station

    - February 6, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Lava rock left by the June 27 lava flow is being cleared from the Pahoa solid waste transfer station this week as Hawaii County prepares for the facilitys reopening March 1.

Lava poured through the transfer stations fence last November and pooled on a driveway used by garbage trucks along its perimeter before stalling.

It left more than 800 cubic yards of rock behind, which crews from Loeffler Construction are breaking apart and hauling to a quarry.

Bobby Jean Leithead Todd, county Environmental Management director, said that work will involve at least 40 truckloads and should be complete in the next few days, with some of the rock being left for landscaping and other features.

We are going to build a couple of small walls around a few of the plants, and were going to use some of it just as a feature, she said.

Lava that flowed down an embankment will be left untouched as long as it doesnt interfere with the facilitys operation.

The county estimated it will cost between $85,000 and $100,000 to reopen the transfer station, Leithead Todd said.

That cost might increase slightly since lava destroyed more asphalt than initially expected, she said. Repaving could cost between $30,000 and $60,000.

The contract for removing the lava rock is for $8,500. The county received four bids, Leithead Todd said.

In addition to paving and removing rock, she said a large water tank needs to be re-installed, electricity needs to be reconnected, and other minor repairs need to be made.
