For years, Las Vegas has been a place where thoughtful architecture goes to die, with cookie-cutter stucco homes, strip malls and mid-rise office buildings blanketing the valley.

The luxury-home market is no different, with supersized Tuscan-style mansions stuffed with the same toys and amenities.

Homebuilder Tyler Jones, however, is adding a dash of style to this look-alike landscape.

Jones, through his Las Vegas company Blue Heron, is developing three communities of high-end, desert-themed luxury homes in Henderson and has built custom homes around the valley. He founded the company with his father and has been in business for a decade, getting project sites that flopped under previous owners and racking up numerous design and environmental awards from construction-industry groups.

The 37-year-old Las Vegas native tries to blend indoor and outdoor space, and subtly packs his cube-shaped homes with electronics.

The design, he said, is Vegas Modern.

At his four-bedroom, 5,800-square-foot model home at Sky Terrace a development off Sunridge Heights Parkway near Eastern Avenue most doors are automated, glass pocket-doors that glide completely into the walls. Outside, the courtyard has a water wall, fire pit and flat-screen TV. There are three other fire pits, including on the rooftop skydeck, which also boasts a wet bar.

There are more than 20 flat-screen TVs scattered around the house, with several hidden behind mirrors, including two alone in the master bathroom. The kitchen bleeds into the living room, and walking around the house, it can take a while to realize that bedrooms and hallways are nowhere in sight.

We want it to feel open, Jones said.

Most luxury homes in the valley not only look the same but often have the same perks movie theaters, elevators, gyms, wine cellars, massage rooms, libraries, gaming and billiards rooms, outdoor kitchens, and manicured landscaping with palm trees, ponds and swimming pools.

Sea Gull Lighting Recalls Chandeliers Due to Injury Hazard

WASHINGTON - Sea Gull Lighting is recalling 34 versions of its chandeliers because they have been falling from the ceiling.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says the chandelier's screw collar that holds it to the ceiling mount can break. That can cause the chandelier to fall and injure bystanders.

Sea Gull Lighting has received four reports of its chandeliers falling from the ceiling. Approximately $1,600 in property damage has been reported. No injuries have been reported.

This recall involves seven collections of Sea Gull Lighting chandeliers including: Brandywine, Laurel Leaf, New Verona, Newport, Parkview, Roslyn and Somerton.

The recalled chandeliers were sold at Lowe's, HomeDepot.com, Amazon.com and other retailers nationwide from November 2006 through August 2013. The chandeliers cost between $250 and $750.

The CPSC says people should not go into the immediate area under the chandeliers. Contact Sea Gull Lighting immediately to receive a free replacement for chandeliers that have fallen, including shipping, or for free replacement hardware to repair the chandelier and instructions on being reimbursed for the full cost of the installation.

Chandeliers Recalled Due to Injury Hazard

Media are invited to the opening of an innovative digital art installation called Solarium on Feb. 11, 2015, at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Centers Visitor Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. The exhibit will be open to media from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. EST. Remarks from the artist and NASA scientists will be at 2 p.m. EST.

Solarium immerses the viewer directly in imagery from the sun's dynamic and explosive atmosphere. Spectacular footage runs from the floor to ceiling. Giant loops of solar material swell up over the suns surface, and eruptions of material five, 10 and 50 times the size of Earth explode out into space.

The opening of Solarium coincides with the fifth anniversary of the launch of NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO. Solarium uses data from SDO, which has kept a constant watch on the sun since Feb. 11, 2010. This data is publicly available and used by scientists to trace how material courses through layers of the solar atmosphere, called the corona, sometimes catalyzing eruptions that can travel toward Earth and affect our orbiting spacecraft, power grids and other technology.

The creators of Solarium adjusted SDO imagery to elicit a calming, soothing and mesmerizing experience. Each minute of footage is the result of 10 hours of work. The imagery was then paired with audio created at Stanford University in California, with the end result being a truly immersive work of art. Solarium will be a permanent exhibit at the NASA Goddard Visitor Center.

Interview opportunities for news media will be offered. Journalists who would like to attend the event should contact Susan Hendrix by the close of business on Feb. 9. Detailed instructions will be provided to media attending this event.

SDO is the first mission of NASA's Living with a Star Program. The program's goal is to develop the scientific understanding necessary to address those aspects of the sun-Earth system that directly affect our lives and society.
