The University of Florida has hired a renowned pest-control researcher from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln to replace John Capinera, who is stepping down at the end of this month after 28 years as chair of UF's entomology and nematology department.
Blair Siegfried, who specializes in pest control, will come on board Sept. 1. Heather McAuslane will serve as interim chair in the meantime, UF officials said in a news release.
"People in Florida, and indeed around the world, need pest-control solutions as they impact homeowners and all aspects of agriculture and the environment," Jack Payne, UF senior vice president of agriculture and natural resources, said in a news release. "Dr. Siegfried is well-positioned to steer UF/IFAS educational, research and Extension programs to help solve global entomological issues."
Siegfried will oversee 30 faculty and 30 staff at the Gainesville campus, and 40 people at Institute of Food and Agricultural Science centers throughout the state.

Ian Gregory understands the frustration of trying to get someone to paint your home. Hes been through the struggle of getting painters to call you back, give you a detailed quote and fit the painting into your schedule. Now hes looking forward to providing a better experience through his new small business, Fresh Coat Painters of Oviedo and Windermere.
Fresh Coat Painters of Oviedo and Windermere offers residential and commercial painting services including interior and exterior painting, wood staining and finishing, and other services for nearly every protective coating application. They use quality, environmentally safe materials and offer a 24/7 customer service center, online scheduling, in-home color design consultations, and detailed quotes.
Fresh Coat Painters of Oviedo and Windermere serves Oviedo, Winter Springs, Casselberry, Chuluota, Windermere, Lake Nona, Bay Hill, Dr. Phillips and the surrounding communities.
Weve tried to get quotes for painters to come to our home and the whole process was very difficult. I eventually did get a couple of quotes, but there was no explanation about where the numbers came from and the painters couldnt work with my schedule. My experience showed me that this area needed a better option for a more professional painting service, which is why we decided to open Fresh Coat, Gregory said.
Gregory is no stranger to owning a business. He actually moved to the States from the U.K. in 2008 to launch his own company, which he sold before opening Fresh Coat.
That business was extremely successful and we sold it to start a new journey, but the success we experienced rested largely on the high level of customer service we provided. Im looking forward to bringing that experience to Fresh Coat and our clients. Its important to me that every client is absolutely satisfied, Gregory said.
Fresh Coat is committed to quality products and services and the company offers a 3-3-3 customer service pledge, so calls will be answered by a live person within three minutes, a quote will be delivered within three days (customer schedule permitting) and the job will be started within three weeks. All Fresh Coat Painters of Oviedo and Windermere employees are professional painters who are insured, trained and background checked.
Our painters are our employees not contractors and well be training them not only to be the best painters, but also to be professionals. Well expect them to be on time, do the job right and provide excellent customer service, Gregory said.
Fresh Coat was founded in 2004 as part of Strategic Franchising Systems. In the last year, Fresh Coat has been included in the Bonds Top 100 and named to Entrepreneur Magazines Franchise 500 list. Fresh Coat is also part of the International Franchise Association, the Small Business Associations Franchise Registry, VetFran and Minority Fran.

CORNING, Calif. -
The Contractors State License Board (CSLB) warns California consumers about unlicensed contractors advertising their illegal services on the popular Craigslist.org. A recent sting in Tehama County led to eight arrests.
According to a news release from the CSLB, all eight people caught during an undercover sting operation conducted last Thursday in Corning were targeted because of illegal ads posted on Craigslist.
CSLB's Statewide Investigative Fraud Team (SWIFT) teamed up with the 'Tehama County District Attorneys Office to conduct the sting at a home near the Corning Canal, just west of Interstate 5.
Investigators posed as homeowners and called suspects to the home to bid on home improvement projects that included installation of new kitchen floor tile, granite countertop, a stone fire pit, landscaping, tree removal, interior and exterior painting, and concrete work.
Bids totaled as much as $16,000 for a new driveway, far above the legal limit. Any home improvement job that cost $500 or more in combined labor and material requires that a person have a state-issued contractors license.
As a result, eight suspects were cited for a misdemeanor charge of contracting without a license (Business and Professions Code section 7028). Six of those suspects will face an additional misdemeanor charge of illegal advertising (Business and Professions Code section 7027.1). State law requires unlicensed contractors to state in all advertising they are not licensed.
In addition, one suspect is expected to be charged with a violation of Labor Code section 3700.5 after bringing an employee to the sting operation who was not covered by workers' compensation insurance. That employee also was taken into custody after investigators determined he was on parole after recently serving seven years in prison for first-degree residential burglary and assault with a deadly weapon. One suspect was on probation for arson; another was found with drug paraphernalia in his pocket.
"This sting is stark evidence of the type of people we often find working without a license," said CSLB Registrar Cindi Christenson "Since advertisers don't pay to be on craigslist, their illegal ads are right next to legitimate ads from licensed contractors. That's why it's vital consumers check CSLB's website and make sure they're considering a reputable contractor in order to avoid serious risks."
CSLB encourages consumers to check the licensing of potential contractors by visiting http://www.cslb.ca.gov or by calling 800-321-2752.

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -
This is a news release from the Hattiesburg alliance for public art
The Hattiesburg Alliance for Public Art (HAPA) and Hattiesburg Arts Council will host an exhibit of 20 Little Free Libraries created by local artists, architects, contractors, city employees, businesses, neighborhood associations, and children. The exhibit and reception will be held on Saturday, February 7, from 3:00 to 5:00 at the Hattiesburg Cultural Center. Visitors are encouraged to bring a gently used book to donate to the cause, since following the Take a Look/Find a Book exhibit, all the libraries will be stocked and placed in pedestrian-friendly areas throughout town.
Local architect and HAPA board member Larry Albert designed four unique libraries which were constructed by area contractors and are being painted by artists. The structures include a juke box to be placed on Mobile Street, a miniature train depot and high-rise building for The Historic Train Depot and Katz Park, anda special surprise for librarian extraordinaire Pamela Pridgen--a miniature version of the library building which is being painted by none other than William (Bill) Baggett, the nationally renowned mural artist whose works include The Spirit That Builds, the 167-foot circular mural inside the Library of Hattiesburg, Petal and Forrest County.
These contractors are all great local citizens, Albert said. Charlie Finnegan of Finlo, Dorian Shoemake of D.C. General, Butch Nobles of Nobles Construction, and Scott Humphrey of B.W. Sullivan Building Contractor, every one of them jumped at the chance to build and donate these libraries, and all they asked of me was that we put them in areas where they could be easily accessed by some of our under-served population.
Hattiesburg Mayor Johnny DuPree has also been an avid supporter of the effort. The very first donation we received came from the mayor, said Rebekah Stark Johnson, Executive Director of the Hattiesburg Arts Council. The mayor provided funding for several children's books in hopes of encouraging parents to read more frequently to their young children. City workers also gathered scrap materials to build five libraries for housing children's books. Those libraries will be placed at city parks and community centers and were painted by artists Kim Whitt, Matt Holland, Hector Boldo, and Vixon Sullivan, as well as the children participating in Hattiesburg's smART space program under the guidance of Abigail Lenz Allen.
Other area youth who are participating include young abstract artist Cade Slaughter who is painting a library for The Oaks Neighborhood Association and the Boy Scouts of Troops 448 and 449 who worked with artist Alejandro Wooten to decorate a library for Trinity Episcopal Church, sponsor of the ScoutReach troops. Art students at Oak Grove High School are constructing a library for the Edwards Street Fellowship Center.
HAPA president Becky Montague is elated with the community's response to the new alliance's first initiative. Hattiesburg was obviously ready for a public art program, she said. There's been a great outpouring of support from artists, the business community, local government, and neighbors. We're collaborating like I've never seen before.
Adolfo Pardo has built several of the structures for participants including Trustmark Bank's Fisher Brown Bottrell Insurance Co., Hattiesburg Concert Association, and Keg & Barrel. Petal artist Ashlea Odom is creating a library for her neighborhood as are Sarah Mangrum, Matt Carr and Jessica Lightfoot for their Kamper Avenues neighborhood. Ben Morrison is at work on a library for Earl Travillion Attendance Center.
All the libraries will remain on exhibit through February 12, and field trips can be arranged by calling Hattiesburg Arts Council at 601.583.6005. Following the exhibit, HAPA will assist with installation and provide for charters so that all libraries can be an official part of the Little Free Library national network. Once the libraries are installed, anyone can take a book home to read and later return it to any of the little libraries in town.

A City of Vancouver councillor wants to limit outdoor light at night to minimize the reportedly detrimental effects on both humans and animals. On Tuesday, council unanimously passed a motion by the Non-Partisan Associations Elizabeth Ball to have the city develop recommendations for an outdoor lighting strategy, which would preserve dark sky, and reduce light pollution in the city.
In her motion, Ball said research shows bright lights at night can disturb the bodys circadian rhythms, disrupt hormone secretions and weaken the immune system. She said studies show it can also interfere with the flight of migratory birds, so the city should work to avoid light spill and make sure we do not trespass with outside light.
Until the turn of the 19th century, evening brought an end to many of mankinds activities, she wrote in the motion. She said that current lighting conditions go beyond the basic requirement of providing illumination simply for the task at hand.
Ball does not advocate for an outright ban on lights at night. Her motion suggests that the strategy permit the use of outdoor lighting with reference to the minimum levels specified by the [Illuminating Engineering Society] recommended practices for nighttime safety, utility, security, productivity, enjoyment and commerce.
Vision Vancouver Counc. Heather Deal, who spoke in support of the motion, said that the city needs to make sure that were not needlessly leaking light into the night skies, and spoke about the potential benefit for stargazers. Mayor Gregor Robertson also voiced his support of the motion and said it was an issue people often asked council to take action on.
In 1991, Ball was hit in the head and knocked out by a chandelier that fell in a lighting store. It is unclear whether the incident was related in any way with her dark-sky motion.

Scott Wunderle
SAXTONS RIVER >> The owner of the landscape architecture firm tasked with designing the park slated for the center of Saxtons River now represents Vermont on the national stage.
Scott Wunderle, who owns TERRIGENOUS in Chester, began his term as president of the Vermont chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects. He recently attended the Chapter Presidents Council biannual meeting in Denver, Colo., and will do so again this spring in Washington, D.C., and next fall in Chicago.
Wunderle, who earned two bachelor's degrees from the Rhode Island School of Design and sports a background in fine art and construction, said he advocates for the profession of landscape architecture and for the design process in general.
"The most successful projects I've worked on combine design, construction management, and hand craft," he said. "I control the macro and the micro throughout the process, and rely on others to do everything in between."
Wunderle told the Reformer the membership of the Vermont chapter which boasts about 60 people voted in the fall to make him president. He said he has since helped organize a holiday party and the 2014 Doug Crowell Lecture Series that featured Seattle-based architect James Cutler who designed the house of Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates as part of Burlington City Arts. Wunderle also organizes monthly meetings of the Vermont chapter of the ASLA.
He said he also is in the middle of organizing the 2014-15 Public Places Awards, which will be held at the Vermont Statehouse. Wunderle told the Reformer the awards are a biannual event to honor landscape architects and members of allied professions who have worked on any outdoor space project.
Wunderle said his tenure has been a great experience so far and he appreciates who he gets to work with.
