MONTVILLE, CT (WFSB) -
About two dozen residents at an apartment complex in Montville were evacuated Monday evening after their building's roof was found to be compromised, according to authorities.
Authorities said residents at the Mount View Realty Apartments, which are located at 1591 Route 32, also known as Norwich-New London Turnpike, reported hearing "loud creaking noises."
"I heard a shift in the ceiling, and then two big crack noises when two beams came flying through the ceiling," Jarrett Arato, who lives in the unit where the roof caved in, said.
After the evacuation, the fire marshal and building official declared the building unsafe until further inspection. Authorities are expected to inspect the apartment complex during the daylight hours.
The American Red Cross is assisting the residents with housing for the evening.
Residents don't think the damage is weather related because there isn't much snow on the roof.
The building was built in 1970 and there are some construction issues. The snow that has piled on top of the roof likely impacted the structure.
"Me and mother live there and if it was five minutes earlier, like if she would have got up, or I got up to use the bathroom and came through the dining hall, one of us could have got killed," Arato said.
Their neighbor Linda Tompkins was awoken by the noise too.

The fire at the Avalon at Edgewater destroyed more than half of the 408-unit complex.
Bergen and Mercer county officials called Tuesday for a review of state building and fire safety codes as they stood near the site of a development planned by the owner of an Edgewater apartment complex partially destroyed last month in a spectacular, quick-burning blaze that shut roadways and schools, spurred evacuations and left hundreds homeless.
Bergen County Executive James Tedesco and Edgewater Mayor Michael McPartland travelled to Princeton to join its mayor, Liz Lempert, and Mercer County Executive Brian M. Hughes in asking state officials to take a hard look at the rules that apparently couldnt prevent the devastating, five-alarm fire in the riverside community.
"This isn't about a company. This is about construction. This is about the state of New Jersey taking a look at the type of construction that we allow and whether the codes that allow that construction to happen are up to date and allow for people to live in a safe environment," said Tedesco.
The officials want the state Department of Community Affairs to review state building codes before it evaluates AvalonBays plan to construct 280 units on a former hospital site in Princeton.
Hughes said he has spoken with DCA Commissioner Richard E. Constable III who indicated there would be a review of building codes before the Princeton project is approved.
"He says he will, indeed, review the fire code and the municipal code here, in the state of New Jersey before giving final approval..., said Hughes. We need to have all the assurances that people are safe in their homes."
There was no immediate comment Tuesday from DCA on the request or Constables plans. Questions posed to DCA last week about a possible code review and its evaluation of the Princeton development also went unanswered.
A spokesman for AvalonBay said Tuesday the firm has no comment at this time.

The Lexington City Council met at the Lexington Police Training Center on Tuesday for its annual retreat. City Manager, Alan Carson said the two-day meeting will serve to look back on the past year's accomplishments and to look forward to new challenges. He emphasized that the retreat is for informational purposes only and there are no votes or final decisions made concerning the upcoming budget.
"There are a lot of positive things to discuss," Carson said. "It is amazing everything that gets accomplished when everyone is working together. The purpose of this retreat is to give detailed reports on complex issues. It is an opportunity to get together and share ideas as we move forward."
Director of Public Utilities for the City of Lexington, Chris Smith, outlined the upcoming projects, past accomplishments and goals for the natural gas and electric department during the retreat. According to a report from the city manager's office, Lexington utilities services make up $79 million out of the annual budget, which is 76 percent of the overall budget.
Smith said upcoming priorities for the natural gas department are adding new customers, extension of natural gas lines in Welcome, Linwood and Southmont, the Winston Road bridge replacement and the GIS mapping projects.
"We had a lot of activity in natural gas and we are still expanding," Smith said. "We are building as people are coming to us. We are seeing more extensions are because of the popularity of natural gas."
Smith said the natural gas department added 2,012 new services from 2003 and large additions came from the Welcome/Arcadia main-line extension, which was completed last year.
He said the replacement of the Winston Road Business I-85 overpass will require reconfiguration of some of the existing natural gas pipeline. Smith said a majority of the project, in relation to the natural gas lines, is estimated at $240,000 but $160,000 should be reimbursed by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.
Smith said the gas department want continue research into private and public fleets of natural gas vehicles; continued implementation of the federal distribution integrity management plan (DIMO) using a GIS system as an analytical tool to maintain compliance and to identify threats to the integrity of the pipeline and discussion on line extension to the proposed I-85 industrial park project adjacent to Belmont Road.
During the presentation on the electric department, Smith said the department is continuing with its capital improvement plan to enhance reliability and plan for future load growth. The main project is the second phase of the utilities operation project, which includes a new electric operations building and warehouse. Smith said they hope to begin this final phase by 2016.

HGTV is an old friend.
The network of home makeovers and remodeling shows debuted in 1994, and Ive been a faithful fan ever since.
Ive daydreamed about which show Id apply for and mentally drafted many a heart-tugging letter to the producers.
Ive drooled over the HGTV dream home, imagining life in the low country of South Carolina, the mountains of Utah or the beaches of Marthas Vineyard. (Do you think anybody random really wins, or is it some producers sister-in-law?)
Ive camped out in Home Depot, just waiting for the Bath Crashers or Kitchen Crashers team to find me pretending to look at sinks or cabinets.
Lately, though, our relationship has been troubled. My favorite escapist network has morphed into the Realtor Channel, as one blogger put it, or more accurately, Rich Home TV.
Originally, the network lineup included shows with affordable advice for real people with normal incomes Designed to Sell, the cheesy Room by Room and Decorating Cents.
That was before House Hunters and its spinoffs were on eight hours a day (we all know its staged, by the way). If I hear one more 20-something complain about the lack of granite or talk about entertaining Im going to hurl the remote at the big-screen. Pay your dues, property virgin.
In between theres a proliferation of shows about people with budgets of $800,000 not a penny more or $1.5 million for a vacation home on some island paradise.
Now I love Property Brothers and Love It or List It as much as the next homeowner. But honestly, where are all these people? A long way from This Old House, the grandfather of home-improvement shows.
