Crackdown on illegal electrification of fences

    - February 3, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Following an increase in the death of wild animals particularly elephants due to electrocution in various parts of The Nilgiris, authorities have decided to crackdown on illegal electrification of fences put up around farms near forests.

    Inspections

Superintending Engineer, Nilgiris Electricity Distribution Circle (NEDC) T.Haldorai told The Hindu here on Sunday that surprise inspections would be carried out by the forest and NEDC officials.

The joint operation would be conducted periodically particularly in and around places such as Bokkapuram, Masinagudy and Chokkanhalli.

Stringent action would be taken against those misusing power connections.

    Awareness

Awareness would be created about the consequences of misusing or stealing power among the villagers and their cooperation would be sought to nab those who illegally electrify fences.

Assistant Conservator of Forests, The Nilgiris North Division, J.Premkumar said that Ravichandran, the main accused in the recent case relating to the death of a tusker due to electrocution at Dhoddamanehaada near Sholur, would be arrested soon.

Pointing out that he was now admitted in a hospital at Coimbatore for treatment of some illness, Mr. Premkumar said that he would be taken into custody as soon as he was discharged.

School meetings will focus on fences, other safety measures

    - February 3, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    February 2, 2015 | 12:52 p.m.

Parents and Newport-Mesa residents are invited this week to a series of community meetings on safety initiatives, such new fences, at Andersen, Victoria and Adams elementary schools.

At the Andersen meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, district officials will lay out a final proposal and timeline to add a fence around the school perimeter, reconfigure the school's entrance and add plants and other aesthetic improvements. The meeting will be held in the multipurpose room at the school, 1900 Port Seabourne in Newport Beach.

Similar presentations are set for 6 p.m. Tuesday at Victoria Elementary, 1025 Victoria St. in Costa Mesa, and 6 p.m. Thursday at Adams Elementary, 2850 Club House Road in Costa Mesa. The presentations will take place in each school's multipurpose room.

Last year, the Newport-Mesa Unified School District board voted for safety initiatives at the three schools. Since then, each school formed a fence design committee, and the recommendations of the panels were incorporated in the proposals being presented this week.
