Members of the City of Laurel Park Board are of the mind that more cooks in the kitchen may bring the long-simmering issue of undocumented city property leases to a boil.
Per MCA 7-16-4223, the Park Board is tasked with the duty to lease all lands owned by the city acquired for parks. Additionally, Montana code restricts such leases to no longer than 5 years and not longer than 1 year without the concurrence of two-thirds of the entire board.
Bruce McGee called on fellow board members to draw up leases for the Laurel Jaycees, Laurel Rifle Club, the Laurel Rod and Gun Club, and American Legion Post 123, which have traditionally held leases on buildings in the Riverside Park.
Complicating Riverside Park leases is the issued of pervasive mold growth in the Rifle Club and Rod and Gun Club buildings, remediation of which far outstrips funds available and possibly the value of the buildings.
The Jaycees Hall and the American Legion building are still usable, albeit facing deferred maintence issues.
But what is a fair price for leasing city property?
Heres the deal: Were a community. And we as a community value organizations... doing their function, so we as a community are willing to provide them a facility to use at a reduced rate because of the benefit to the community, said McGee. We should be willing to consider that they get this at a much reduced price than fair market value.

Remodeling your bathroom? You just might want to get this NASA-inspired shower.
About 17 percentof the wateryou use in your home goes down the shower drain, costing about $70 a year for the average U.S. household. The eco-conscious can only cut back on the frequency and duration of showers by so much, before hygiene and odor starts to lose them friends. Orbital Systems, a Swedish startup, claims its Shower of the Future reduces water consumption by 90 percent and energy use by 80 percent, while still letting users feel clean and comfortable.
Mehrdad Mahdjoubi, CEO and co-founder of Orbital Systems, worked on NASAs Mars mission project. The planet lacks water, so whatever small amount made the 150- to 300-day journey gets recycled many times over. Weve transferred the technology from space to Earth, Mahdjoubi tells the Guardian.
Instead of letting the water from the showerhead circle down the drain, its collected, purified until its drinkable, then reused. An eight-minute shower uses less than 1.3 gallons, while a standard shower takes 18 gallons. Since the Orbital Systems H2O stays warm, it also cuts down the energy it takes to warm that water. According Orbital Systems cost-saving calculator, a two-person household in San Francisco could save $320 a year with the Shower of the Future. An accompanying iOS and Android app lets you keep tabs on how much water and energy youre saving.
The company also claims its flow rate is 5 gallons a minute, higher than a lot of current showerheads that restrict water to 2.2 gallons a minute.

Unlike something like the Eva, which throttles water use and is an easy add-on device for your current shower, Mahdjoubis system replaces your current set-up entirely. The showers are already installed in a few hotels and swimming facilities.
Though its available for pre-order now, innovation doesnt come cheap. The total cost of the shower, minus installation, is 3200 ($3,629) to 4000 ($4,537), depending on the model. The company expects to start shipping the system early this year.

TAMPA The New Salem Missionary Baptist Church, led by embattled Pastor Henry J. Lyons, was heavily damaged by a fire that began before dawn Monday.
No one was injured, but the roof and virtually the entire interior of the church was destroyed; damage was estimated at $400,000.
The church building had stood in North Hyde Park for nearly 65 years. Church members milled about Monday morning as Tampa Fire Rescue firefighters stood by, occasionally hoisting an extended ladder over the smoldering building, dumping water onto spots that flared up. Some congregation members wept and hugged each other.
The church, organized in 1906 and at its current location since 1950, had recently been in financial trouble and was placed under Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2012, though it has since emerged from bankruptcy.
The church was for sale but still was home to some 450 members in this neighborhood just west of the University of Tampa.
The 4,700-square-foot brick church building at 405 N. Oregon Ave., and some adjoining lots were placed on the market for $1.8 million in November, according to the website of AKA Commercial Realty, which is listing the property.
Tampa firefighters got a 911 call at 6:30 a.m., a half-hour before the day-care in the building was to open, said fire-rescue spokesman Jason Penny. When firefighters arrived, flames already were breaching the shingled roof, rising about 30 feet above the structure.
The first arriving firefighters immediately called out a second alarm, Penny said, because of the flames and the age of the building.
Flames could be seen on Interstate 275, a dozen blocks to the north, Penny said.
The second alarm doubled the units responding. In all, about 45 firefighters were at the location on the corner of Oregon Avenue and Fig Street, considered the north part of Hyde Park.

A remote town in western Cuba is set to be the first parish in the country to build a new church, as official government policy in the Communist nation towards religion makes a major shift.
According to CNN, a new Catholic church is set to be built in the remote town of Sandino. The new church will take two years to build and will have a capacity to accommodate 200 churchgoers.
Rev Fr Cirilo Castro told CNN that Sandino's Catholics have celebrated Mass once a week in a converted garage for many years now. The priest drives to the town every week to officiate as part of his ministerial duties to the province under whose jurisdiction the town falls. However, when the new church is completed, Fr Castro said that he will minister full-time in the town.
The diocese assured Sandino's residents that "everything is ready" for the construction of the new church.
"There is money to start, there is the construction material to start, there are the permissions to start," Bishop Jorge Enrique Serpa Prez said.
CNN reported that most of the money that was donated for the church's construction came from the St Lawrence Catholic Church in Tampa, Florida.
"Much of Tampa's history and culture comes from Cuba," Rev Tom Morgan, St Lawrence's vicar, told CNN. "It's absolutely fantastic they are building a new church, and I hope to be able to visit one day."
Fr Morgan also hopes that the changes in the US Treasury's policies could make it possible for St Lawrence to contribute materials for the church's construction.
Religious freedom was suppressed after the 1959 revolution that brought the late Fidel Castro to power. However, since 1998, the Cuban government began easing up on its restrictions on the Catholic Church. This year, the government began approving requests for the construction of churches in the country, with the project in Sandino being the first to receive a green light.

Priests from different denominations celebrate the annual Inagural mass for the Ice Church in Romania's Fagras Mountains.
Priests from different Christian denominations have given their blessing to a unique ice church located at the Balea Lac resort in Romania's Fagaras Mountains.
According to the IB Times, a group of leaders came together on Thursday to hold the annual inaugural Mass for the Ice Church in the Hotel of Ice. Among the priests who came together for the ceremony were a Franciscan monk, a Romanian Orthodox priest and a Greek Catholic priest.
The Hotel of Icerevealed on its website that the church was born out of the concept of "religious tourism". The hotel sponsored the construction of the church within its premises, and said that it was intended to be open to various denominations.
The church, which is located more than 2,000 metres high in the mountains, has become a popular tourist attraction even among those of different religious orientations, the Hotel of Ice claimed. The church's architecture is based on another church in Malancrav, in Sibiu County in Romania, and its interior features an ice altar and a large crucifix also made out of ice.
Every year, the church is constructed out of sanctified ice from the waters of the Balea Lake. Priests from different Christian denominations are called to give their blessings to the waters of Balea Lake before they are frozen to make the blocks of ice for the church. Once the structure has been completed, the priests are again called to perform an inaugural Mass to commemorate the building of the new ice church.
According to the hotel, the church has celebrated baptisms and weddings as well as religious services for different Christian denominations. The church has also hosted religious concerts.
