Jeff Wilson replaced his HVAC system for the same reason most homeowners do: It broke.
Five years ago in the heat of summer, his air conditioner died and this was well before he embarked on an all-out Deep Energy Retrofit (DER) to green his 70-year-old Cape Cod. Still, he used this opportunity to upgrade the old, standard unit.
"We had to keep a little air conditioning on so we didn't have so much mold," Jeff says, describing a major pitfall of the home: high humidity that produced damaging condensation, causing woodwork deterioration and poor air quality.
Jeff got three bids for the HVAC project, ranging from $3,500 to trade the old HVAC unit for a comparable model to $12,000 for a state-of-the-art system. (These price estimates are from the time of installation in 2005.)
"We expected gas prices to go through the roof, which they did in 2008," Jeff says, weighing the options. "And we expected this new HVAC unit to last."
The 26-year-old unit Jeff replaced was 80 percent efficient not bad for 1979 technology. But we've come a long way since then. The standard option Jeff considered as a replacement would basically restore the system to status quo for $3,500. But Jeff was looking for more.
The midrange unit was priced at $4,200 and would boost the furnace efficiency to 90 percent, with a 16-SEER air conditioner. The lower the Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating (SEER), the more energy it takes to cool the home.
The high-end system would cost Jeff $5,800, but for that $2,300 more, he got more features and optimum, 97 percent efficiency. Because the Wilsons mainly used their air conditioning to defuse the thick humidity typical in southeast Ohio during summer, a variable-speed blower was worth the investment. This mechanism allows Jeff to set the humidity level on his thermostat. "Instead of cooling your house down to get humidity levels low, you can do a bit of dehumidifying [with the blower] to keep the temperatures lower," he explains.
Jeff could get this feature plus 7 percent more efficiency on the gas furnace.
"We were looking toward the future," he says of the price tag and, when comparing systems, the estimated five-year payback.

Method of Wiring - for Three Phase DOL Motor
The Main contactor has three NO contacts and one NO and NC Auxiliary contacts. A thermal overload relay is shown in the example but one can use only a contactor without the overload unit. If a thermal overload unit is used, it's rating should correspond to the motor running amperage.
Install the 415 V coil contactor in a suitable enclosure and fix the On/Off Push Button switches at the required operating point.
Wire from a 3 Phase power supply of a 3 Pole MCB or a Main switch of the Power Distribution to the L1,L2 and L3 terminals of the contactor. If a Thermal overload is connected to the contactor's T1,T2 and T3 terminals, then connect the load wires to the motor to the T1,T2 and T3 terminals of the thermal overload.
Now for the control wiring.
Connect a wire to L1 terminal and connect the other end to a terminal of the On Push Button.
Connect the other terminal of the On Push Butto to the terminal of the Off Push button.
The remaining therminal of the OFF Push button should be wired to one of the Thermal Overload's NC contact terminal.
The other terminal of the Thermal Overload's NC contact should be wired to the coil terminal A1 of the contactor.
[ If a Thermal overload is not used, then the remaining therminal of the OFF Push button should be wired to A1 terminal of the contactor.]

SHENANDOAH A cooperative effort between the Shenandoah Rotary Club and Shenandoah Valley School District will lead to a community walking course around the district campus in the near future called the Rotary Way.
Shenandoah Rotarian and school district Superintendent Stanley G. Rakowsky made the announcement during his report at Wednesdays school board meeting.
Its a true town and gown relationship, Rakowsky said, referring to the school district being an active part of the borough community.
Rakowsky explained the walking course diagram on how the path goes around and through the campus on existing roads and walkways.
The path has an incline, but no steps, he said. There are no infrastructure costs to be expended. These are all areas that we have to keep clear, even in bad weather.
The course is about 1,900 yards, or just more than one mile.
What were planning is a dedication sometime in the spring that will tie in with the Healthy Shenandoah project, Rakowsky said.
The Healthy Shenandoah project is sponsored by Schuylkill Countys VISION, Schuylkill Health, Healthy Schuylkill Communities and Shenandoah Senior Living Community. A free Healthy Shenandoah community expo will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Shenandoah Senior Living Community.
During his superintendents report, Rakowsky told the school board and the public about the walking path.
Rotary has been in the community since 1922. The club has done many good things, the club continues to show its not done yet, Rakowsky said. We talk about the Rotary way of doing things, about service above self for the community, and what better way to show this by calling the path the Rotary Way.
