Welcome to our blog about the process and proposals for the new LARP building! With so much going on and the process moving so quickly, we wanted a way to keep our faithful alumni and future students updated on what is going on. Well post on this blog when we reach big milestones, so keep watching this space!
Its hard to overestimate what having a new building will mean for LARP. Many of you know that Hills was originally built as a dormitory, and was repurposed for academic life. Its had a good run and weve all built great memories here, but everyone who visits knows we obviously need an upgrade. This has become even more pressing in recent years, as mold issues mean that not all of the faculty can even enter the building. Because of our outstanding faculty we have been quite successful over the years despite Hills. Weve always liked to think that the best programs are often in the worst spaces, but Im not so sure anymore. I look forward to proving that the best programs can also be in the best spaces. It is invigorating to think about what we will be able to do with a beautiful new space.
The new building will bring together LARP with Architecture (now a program, but likely to be a department by the time we all move) and Building and Construction Technologies (also currently a program, but likely to merge with Architecture by the big move).
A few big picture facts:
Our architecture team is world class: Leers Weinzapfel, with principal Andrea Leers as the lead designer. You can see examples of their work at: http://www.lwa-architects.com/. Our landscape architects are Stephen Stimson Associates, http://www.stephenstimson.com/. Stimson is an alumni of the MLA program and has taught in our department. His firm did the beautiful design which puts green infrastructure to work in UMass Southwest concourse.
With such a big, complicated, fast project UMass got an Owners Rep on board early. We have been very happy with the work of Collaborative Partners in Cambridge MA in keeping us all represented in the process and doing just what their name suggests encouraging collaboration, but also assuring that we keep moving along.
The big question is WHERE! The architects are developing proposals for Lot 62, which is the parking area right across from the Fine Arts Center, or for upgrading and connecting to Clark Hall. Ultimately the final location is a decision the Chancellor will make.
Ah, but what will happen to Hills, you ask? It is destined to come down altogether, and become a parking lot. If we can work it out with the lawyers, were dreaming of having an alumni event where for $25 you can swing a sledgehammer at the building once we are all moved out! That sounds like a party.
This Friday (January 10th) the architects will present the options and their initial designs. Watch this space for a video of their presentation! In future blogs well talk more about the building design, the sustainability features, the studio concepts, and the landscape design, maybe reminiscence on Hills and more.
Happy New Year! -Elisabeth Hamin, Head of Department

Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning

For many homeowners, a swimming pool is a "must have" item for the backyard. I happen to be one of those homeowners. But when it comes to landscaping ideas for the pool area, many of these same homeowners come up short.
What plants should I use? Where should I place them? What types of plants should I avoid? The questions go on and on.
Over the years, I've learned a lot about pool landscaping through trial and error. So in this article, I'll share with you all of the ideas and techniques I've used over the years for landscaping my backyard pool areas. Hopefully you'll find something useful in all of this, and perhaps even come up with some ideas of your own.
On its own, landscape design is fairly straightforward. But when you add in a swimming pool, there is much more to consider. Here are some of the things you need to keep in mind, as you draw up the landscaping plans for your backyard oasis:
Landscape design is all about choosing the right types of plants, based on the location and the desired effect. As you think about the area around your swimming pool (and, for that matter, your yard in general), consider the points I've raised above. Make smart choices based on plenty of research, and you'll be better off in the long run.
As for plant choices, you need to figure out what types of shrubs, flowers and trees fare well in your particular climate. Many people think 'tropical' when it comes to landscaping a pool area. But if you live in the Midatlantic region or northward, tropical plants probably wouldn't make it through the winter. The ice and frost would kill them off. This is just one example of choosing the right plants for your climate. I cannot list all of the possible choices in this article, because it varies significantly from one part of the country to the next.
Here are the steps I recommend, when choosing plants for your pool landscape design:
Of course, you'll also be limited by what is available at landscape supply yards in your area. But at least you'll know which of those species have the best chance of survival.
One of the things you should consider early on, before you get deep into your landscaping efforts, is the idea of deck and patio space. When we built our pool, we had a grassy area behind it that backed up to a greenbelt area. Weed control was a serious problem in this area, because it was so close to the 'wilds' of the greenbelt. We also wanted more deck space around the back of our pool for accessibility reasons.

Swimming Pool Landscaping Ideas - How to Landscape Your ...
Quality means no shortcuts. Using lower grade materials, undersized pipes, and engineering shortcuts can save you money initially, but will cost more in the long run. Rarely is the customer who bought the cheap pool happy in the end. Garden View uses quality material with the most up to date and tested equipment. Our many years of experience have taught us what is cost effective in the long run. A swimming pool does not need to have exorbitant cost, but rarely is the cheapest option a good investment.
Growing in value, sustainable and water-wise designs are the hallmarks of a well designed and installed landscape. Properly installed and well planned irrigation systems save water and keep the landscape growing in value for years to come. Picking the right plants and proper placement for future growth is vitally important. Our system of the client visiting our large nursery, reviewing our suggestions, and picking the plant pallet before deciding where to place them is cost and time effective. Plus the client only gets plants they like!
There are many types of hardscapesAll with advantages, disadvantages, and cost differences. Garden View has skilled crews for any type of hardscape chosen, whether it be concrete with fissure reduction techniques, pavers, flagstone, brick, tile, decomposed granite, or any other type of paving; it will be done to the highest standards and will be cost effective.
Being around water is soothing and the water feature is often the highlight and/or focal point of the yard. With the help of our expertise, choosing the right water feature, finding the right level of investment, and quality installation will make it enjoyable for many years to come. The water feature can be part of a pool or a separate entity.
The Outdoor Living room can be the best and most enjoyable room in the house. It can include outdoor TVs, furniture, dining tables, and fans to keep you cool + bugs away. Fireplaces, fire pits, and heaters can extend the enjoyment almost all year round. Cooking and dining outside is a pleasure and it can also help keep the house cool. The choices in this area are enormous from very simple to very intricatefrom a simple BBQ to a complete outdoor kitchen From a simple deck to a complete patio with pergola!
Our 12 acre nursery located in Irwindale, CA has 1000s of plants of all sizes. From flowers and annuals to trees and shrubs, we have the right plant for your landscape in all sizes and colors. Having our own nursery makes picking the right plants and trees easy for our landscape construction and maintenance divisions, plus it provides us advantages on bringing out and returning plants not used.
High quality, horticulturally proficient, and cost effective through efficiency. Our large, well trained, uniformed, and well supervised crews arrive in trucks with everything they need to be efficient. Quality maintenance is the key to sustainable landscapes that grow in value. Far too many people hire Mow, Blow & Go gardeners and slowly watch their investment in their landscape deteriorate.

SNOW HILL | Neil Jernigan always thought he had a chance at winning a photography contest since he began entering them as a teenager.
And this year, he was more confident than usual.
The 23-year-old from Snow Hill had entered his photo in the bird category and ended up winning the overall award for the 2014 Wildlife in North Carolina Photo Contest.
His photo is featured on the cover of the January-February issue of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commissions magazine, available at Neuse Sport Shop in Kinston.
Jernigan said he had just married Candace Hill of Snow Hill in October and was on his honeymoon at Maggie Valley after photographing a herd of elk in Tennessee when he got an email telling him he had won. He thought it was spam at first, but had to keep silent about winning until the magazine published.
I was very excited, he said. Im still very excited about it.
Jernigans winning photo of a great egret was taken at Lake Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge. He happened across the white bird, which was standing near the edge of a canal feeding on small fish. The egrets perfect reflection could be seen in the water, and it was standing in the only spot of sunlight.
Jernigan set his camera to cancel out the foreground and background so that only the bird and its reflection would show up against the darkness.
All of this happened in just a couple of minutes before the egret flew away, Jernigan wrote in his blog. I reviewed my images and was extremely excited when I discovered that I got the shot I had imagined in my mind.
The winning photo is on exhibit through March at the North Carolina Natural Museum of Sciences in Raleigh and other science museums and wildlife education centers across the state.
