For many homeowners, a swimming pool is a "must have" item for the backyard. I happen to be one of those homeowners. But when it comes to landscaping ideas for the pool area, many of these same homeowners come up short.

What plants should I use? Where should I place them? What types of plants should I avoid? The questions go on and on.

Over the years, I've learned a lot about pool landscaping through trial and error. So in this article, I'll share with you all of the ideas and techniques I've used over the years for landscaping my backyard pool areas. Hopefully you'll find something useful in all of this, and perhaps even come up with some ideas of your own.

On its own, landscape design is fairly straightforward. But when you add in a swimming pool, there is much more to consider. Here are some of the things you need to keep in mind, as you draw up the landscaping plans for your backyard oasis:

Landscape design is all about choosing the right types of plants, based on the location and the desired effect. As you think about the area around your swimming pool (and, for that matter, your yard in general), consider the points I've raised above. Make smart choices based on plenty of research, and you'll be better off in the long run.

As for plant choices, you need to figure out what types of shrubs, flowers and trees fare well in your particular climate. Many people think 'tropical' when it comes to landscaping a pool area. But if you live in the Midatlantic region or northward, tropical plants probably wouldn't make it through the winter. The ice and frost would kill them off. This is just one example of choosing the right plants for your climate. I cannot list all of the possible choices in this article, because it varies significantly from one part of the country to the next.

Here are the steps I recommend, when choosing plants for your pool landscape design:

Of course, you'll also be limited by what is available at landscape supply yards in your area. But at least you'll know which of those species have the best chance of survival.

One of the things you should consider early on, before you get deep into your landscaping efforts, is the idea of deck and patio space. When we built our pool, we had a grassy area behind it that backed up to a greenbelt area. Weed control was a serious problem in this area, because it was so close to the 'wilds' of the greenbelt. We also wanted more deck space around the back of our pool for accessibility reasons.

Quality means no shortcuts. Using lower grade materials, undersized pipes, and engineering shortcuts can save you money initially, but will cost more in the long run. SNOW HILL | Neil Jernigan always thought he had a chance at winning a photography contest since he began entering them as a teenager.

And this year, he was more confident than usual.

The 23-year-old from Snow Hill had entered his photo in the bird category and ended up winning the overall award for the 2014 Wildlife in North Carolina Photo Contest.

His photo is featured on the cover of the January-February issue of the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commissions magazine, available at Neuse Sport Shop in Kinston.

Jernigan said he had just married Candace Hill of Snow Hill in October and was on his honeymoon at Maggie Valley after photographing a herd of elk in Tennessee when he got an email telling him he had won. He thought it was spam at first, but had to keep silent about winning until the magazine published.

I was very excited, he said. Im still very excited about it.

Jernigans winning photo of a great egret was taken at Lake Mattamuskeet National Wildlife Refuge. He happened across the white bird, which was standing near the edge of a canal feeding on small fish. The egrets perfect reflection could be seen in the water, and it was standing in the only spot of sunlight.

Jernigan set his camera to cancel out the foreground and background so that only the bird and its reflection would show up against the darkness.

All of this happened in just a couple of minutes before the egret flew away, Jernigan wrote in his blog. I reviewed my images and was extremely excited when I discovered that I got the shot I had imagined in my mind.

The winning photo is on exhibit through March at the North Carolina Natural Museum of Sciences in Raleigh and other science museums and wildlife education centers across the state.

11-year-old girl dies of smoke inhalation

BLOOMINGDALE - In announcing yesterday's arrest of a 25-year-old man allegedly found with heroin, authorities said the suspect is connected to the burglary and theft of a vacant home on Van Dam Avenue, which was found stripped of wiring and plumbing fixtures.

In a press release, Patrolman Daniel Fletcher reported that the Detective Bureau conducted an investigation that led to the arrest of Joseph Connell, of an undisclosed town, on charges of burglary, theft, and heroin possession. When arrested on Friday, Jan. 30, police said, Connell was in possession of five glassine envelopes of heroin.

Fletcher said that Detective/Sgt. Steven Caputo and Patrolman David Terpstra had developed info during another investigation that led them to charge Connell in connection with the burglary of a home under construction on Van Dam Avenue.

The municipal court judge set bail at $10,000, with a 10-percent option, which Connell was able to post through a family member.

Patrolman Daniel Greenwood also assisted with the arrest.

OCALA -- Four structure fires in less than 24 hours kept Marion County Fire Rescue firefighters busy throughout the county.

The fires began Friday at 5:30 p.m. and concluded before noon Saturday, according to spokeswoman Jessica Greene Fuchs. Of the four fires, no one was injured. However, a family dog died in one of the blazes, the spokesperson said.

The first fire was reported in Ocklawaha at 5:30 p.m. Friday at 10451 SE 132nd Place involving a grease fire that was contained to the kitchen.

On Saturday, the first of three fires occurred in Ocklawaha at 10230 SE 464C at 9:08 a.m., where 16 firefighters battled a mobile home fire. The blaze was put out before 9:30 a.m. Officials think faulty electrical wiring may be the cause of that fire.

Firefighters also went to 6055 NW 125th Street Road in Reddick, where residents woke up smelling smoke in the 2,500-square-foot home and ran outside. The garage was engulfed and flames spread to the home.

More than 20 firefighters responded to the fire. Officials said the roof was considered unstable, and firefighters who were inside backed out for their safety. They searched for the family dog, which later was found deceased.

Another fire was at 17620 SE 81st Timberwood Terrace in The Villages. That fire started in the homes electrical box, officials said. The homeowners prevented the fire from spreading by turning off the electricity. Firefighters checked the walls to make sure the fire didnt get inside, and the fire hadnt spread anywhere else.
