Senior Vice President of Engineering and R&D Services of HCL, Sukamal Banerjee took some time to speak with IMPO about the demand of engineering and R&D services both domestically and abroad. Banerjee explains the ins-and-outs of the factors driving demand, to changes in the industry and finally, the issue of skilled labor within engineering and R&D services.
Maura Falk: What do you think are some of the key factors driving stronger demand and growth for HCLs engineering and R&D Divisions both domestically and abroad?
Sukamal Banerjee: Following the 2008 financial crisis, R&D intensity (i.e. the ratio of expenditures by a firm on research and development to the firms sales) for all the engineering and manufacturing companies have been running flat or declined. Therefore, all engineering organizations have been re-evaluating their R&D investments to improve returns. Most of our leading customers were struggling with stagnating revenues and single digit operating margins at the time of deal.
Global OEMs & technology companies today are differentiating through software and services. These companies are increasingly expanding from core products to services driven models. For example, Xeroxis expanding from multi-functional device manufacturing to Managed Print Services (MPS).Even for the worlds most innovative OEM, software and services contribute 10 percent revenues, and is the fastest growing segment. While faster technology migrations have become the order of the day, it is also essential to ensure sustained engineering and end of lifecycle product support. The partnership model for such needs are a natural and strategic choice for product companies. With enhanced service capabilities and high domain expertise, HCL has assisted in extending the product life and in process generated hundreds of millions in revenues for customers, which would have otherwise not happened without a focused ownership.
Also, the emerging convergence of digital and platform engineering is playing a significant role in the engineering and R&D services market. We focus on proactively creating solutions for top of the mind challenges faced by OEMs through our enhanced solutions capabilities and fast-track R&D transformation for legacy products. We have seen engineering and R&D services evolve and grow to a $900+ million business at HCL Technologies.
The key factors contributing to the growth of engineering and R&D outsourcing continue to be accelerated time to market, increased complexity driven by convergence, need for access to varied and scalable talent pool. HCLs investments into the business line and developing proactive technology and process related innovations has helped us drive a disproportionate share of the market.
MF: Last year ISG reported that engineering services markets were moving abroad. Is this a trend that you have seen continue in your own firms? And is a wider global presence contributing to the increased demand for certain engineering services more than others?
SB: With the convergence of technologies, increased use of devices of varied form factors, electronic components and communication technologies, the engineering services market, like all other markets, is also hit by an accelerated need for innovation and execution. This has led close to the customer, closer to the product value chain execution. This has meant local presence is needed to work effectively with customers on such programs.
While theres an expansion of the engineering services internationally, the US continues to be an important market. Emerging markets have evolved to become prominent players in the recent years and are likely to become increasingly dominant in the future. The European market is opening up and is expected to contribute significantly in the coming years. We also see the ESO spend shifting to emerging markets like India and other adjacent Asian markets.
According to IDCs Engineering Services Buyer Study results (2013), global delivery presence contributes to about 17 percent of ESP selection. It is our ability to share risks and partner with the company that has been instrumental in the growth of the HCL Engineering and R&D Services division. We strive to co-create a conducive ecosystem for product development and also help in taking the products to the market with innovative business models like the risk & reward model and output-based model. We adopt a hybrid global delivery model based on the requirements and the nature of work involved. High-end and complex work which is more core to the customer is carried out in the onsite development centers, while context-based ground work and low-complexity services can be carried out at the offshore sites. We have seen an increase in joint innovation and development work carried out at our Onsite Delivery Centers to up to 25 percent in the recent past.

Q&A: The Changing Engineering And R&D Landscape
THE stars of a new documentary following the lives of tenant hill farmers as they try to breed the perfect sheep have spoken of their small screen experience ahead of its release.
Tom and Kay Hutchinson, who live near Middleton-in-Teesdale, County Durham, feature in Addicted to Sheep, along with their three children Hetty, 10,Esme, 12 and Jack, 13.
The family, who fully admit being addicted to sheep, were filmed over 18 months at their Bail Hill Farm home by French film maker Magali Pettier.
She was given unrestricted access to the family from June 2010 to September 2011, where she captured 62 hours of footage of them and their flock of pedigree Swaledale sheep as they battled through the seasons.
Talking about the experience, Mr Hutchinson said: It was not intrusive as we thought it would be.
The children thought it was done well they were quite nervous seeing it because they were a lot smaller when it was filmed but Magali was very good with them.
Mrs Huthcinson said: "My favourite bit is when Esme goes into a field and starts painting because I think there are not many kids that can appreciate the freedom that our kids have.
Ms Pettier, of Provence Films, teamed up with Jan Cawood, of Tin Man Films, to produce the independent documentary, after 9,000 was raised through a successful crowd-funding campaign.
A 3,500 sum from Heart of Teesdale Landscape Partnership and the Heritage Lottery Fund also allowed the pair to work with editor, Matt Dennis, to develop the 62 hours of raw footage into an 85-minute documentary.
The team were then helped in post-production by Teesside Universitys DigitalCity, where Ms Pettier and Ms Cawood are both former fellows.

When Ami McKay moved to British Columbia from her native Niagara Falls 20 years ago, her dream was to paint the mountains. She took classes at the Emily Carr University of Art + Design, but then changed disciplines. Today, shes an interior designer, specializing in residential and hospitality projects in addition to new builds; McKay collaborates on them with project manager Don Thomas, her partner in life and business. As principal of Pure Design Inc., she has also designed a line of sustainable furniture and bedding sold across Canada through Bed, Bath & Beyond stores. Much of her ideas come from nature, with which McKay maintains a connection through her principal residence, a three-bedroom cabin in the woods some 25 minutes north of Vancouver. The mountains, which originally lured her west, are visible from the cabins living room. And they inspire her still. It is heaven here, she says. We have our own private beach and I can see it all through the windows in this room, which Ive designed to be very earthy to contrast with the ocean outside.
The windows
There are no curtains on purpose this room has such wow factor. When people walk into the space, their mouths drop, because all you see is blue, the blue of the ocean. It feels like you are in a floating home and I didnt want anything to take away from that. The view is everything in this room.
The chairs
These I designed myself. They are part of my Pure furniture line, which is 100-per-cent sustainable. I upholstered them in a linen cotton blend fabric. I love that they are white, as I like having light-looking furniture in my home. It doesnt compete for attention with the other pieces in the room.
The side table
This is really neat. It comes from Indonesia. When the forests are clear cut [there], the villagers are left with nothing except the root in the ground, which they dig out and sell. So this table serves two purposes for me: Its sculptural and its also giving back. Its a table with a conscience.
The ceiling
Its a cedar-beam ceiling. Its interesting and really beautiful. I really like how the white walls pop against the high contrast of the wood.

Tailored leather surfaces, unique acrylic trim elevate concept cars interior
DETROIT -- January 30, 2015: The Buick Avenirs sculpted exterior and dramatic proportions arent the only attributes turning heads and winning awards. The design and materials within the concept cars interior continue to earn accolades.
The attention to detail within Avenir is outstanding, said Charles Allen, a retired automotive designer who served as a chief judge for the 2015 EyesOn Design Awards. What stands out to me is how well everything is integrated all of the materials and elements work together seamlessly to provide a sensation of understated elegance that fits the Buick brand perfectly.
While designers drew inspiration from nature specifically water washing upon a shoreline when shaping the graceful lines within Avenirs interior, the color and trim team worked to find the right materials to add a dynamic flair.
With Avenirs interior, we really wanted to select materials that would complement the surfaces within, said Rebecca Waldemir, Buick Color and Trim design manager. Using a distinctive combination of premium leather, suede, wood, chrome and acrylic, we were able to design elements that flow seamlessly throughout the interior.
Avenirs designers even put a new twist on wood trim, a traditional Buick element. Not only are wood accents featured on the door panels, but the wood itself provides a more luxurious and natural appearance that adds to the airiness of the interior.
Weve used open-pore wood in a modern way, much like what youll find in high-end furniture. Its an oiled, low-gloss execution that contrasts beautifully with other interior dcor, said Waldemir.
Avenirs sculptural instrument panel incorporates an acrylate panel, carved to replicate three-dimensional wave-like patterns but layered beneath a smooth, high-gloss outer layer. As you look at the transparent surface from different angles, you will notice that it has a lot of visual depth and movement. Its a motif we carried to other areas of Avenir, including the seat design, and to the head- and tailamps, Waldemir said.
While Avenirs exterior color is a cooler tone, designers wanted to provide a warm, inviting sensation within. The lighter Lyric hue, found on most interior surfaces, helps achieve that feeling, while restrained use of a darker tone Coastal Myst on the instrument panel and arm rests provides a natural transition to the exterior. To further create a tailored feel, most surfaces within the Avenir are wrapped in leather or suede and accentuated with stitching.
All-in-all, Avenirs interior materials were designed to work in harmony and provide an upscale environment that feels natural and holistic to all passengers.
