Forgot to lock a door before going on vacation? No need to call the neighbors: theres an app for that.
In just a few years, home security systems have gone from complicated keypads that might lock the doors to comprehensive systems that monitor all types of functions.
A number of local and national companies in the Topeka area offer home security services, equipment and smartphone apps.
As Kansas Audio Videos Aaron Koker notes, its not just about home security anymore but home automation.
The skys the limit as to what can be monitored, Koker said. Its more than just a burglar system.
Koker says you can put sensors on the liquor cabinet to see if the teenagers are sneaking the scotch. According to Koker, almost any door can be monitored.
Even basements prone to flooding can be monitored, according to Koker.
If thats a risk, youre going to want to know if your gone if theres standing water in your basement, Koker said.
Kansas Audio Videos full cellphone, interactive systems start at $40 a month for coverage of three doors, smoke detection, a main touch screen and about $700 worth of equipment. The owner signs a 36-month contract and pays a $99 activation fee. The system is designed to be modular, which Koker says makes the system future-proof.
Koker says homeowners need to talk about how they live and what they want from a system so it isnt left unused.

NEW Southern Province Minister Nathaniel Mubukwanu during an inspection of a 6 storey provincial administration building under construction in Choma
Newly appointed Southern Province Minister Nathaniel Mubukwanu has described the construction of a six storey building as a major milestone in the province.
Speaking in Choma today when he toured the infrastructure that is under construction, Mr Mubukwanu said the relocation of the provincial headquarters from Livingstone to Choma has resulted in massive infrastructural developments in the district.
He said so far the project had employed over 200 local people.
This is a massive project resulting from the relocation of the provincial headquarters from Livingstone to Choma. If the relocation was not done, we would not be talking of this massive development today. We believe this is going to be a landmark not only in Southern Province but in other provincial centres as well,he said.
The Southern Province Minister noted that the completion of the office block would greatly address the challenges of office accommodation that the officers were currently facing.
Government has so far spent K67 million in the construction of the six storey building, twelve high cost, twenty medium and thirty low cost houses.
The construction of the houses is expected to be completed later this year.

Bloomberg News
Sometime next week, a metal frame will go up around the blocky brick tower at Manhattan's 425 Park Ave., designed to protect pedestrians from falling objects. It's a prelude to the building's demise.
In about three years, if all goes according to plan, the site will have a new Norman Foster-designed skyscraper more than twice the height of the existing one. The replacement would be the first new office building in almost four decades on what the developer, David Levinson, called New York's "grand boulevard of commerce."
425 Park Ave.
The 893-foot (272-meter) tower will rise amid Manhattan's biggest rush of skyscraper construction since the 1980s, with millions of square feet of offices in such projects as Hudson Yards on the far west side and the World Trade Center downtown. Levinson is building "on spec," meaning without any tenants signed up. It's a gamble on the staying power of today's accelerating demand for space, and a practice that's had a checkered history in the city, said Lawrence Longua, a retired real estate professor at New York University.
"Obviously, when you begin one of these large New York office buildings, the market is there when you begin it," said Longua, now an adjunct at Baruch College's Newman Real Estate Center. "But the market may not be there when you complete it."
The new Park Avenue skyscraper, between East 55th and 56th streets, will be narrower than the existing 1950s-era building, and have about the same 670,000 square feet (62,000 square meters) of floor space. The developers are touting it as a 21st century answer to the neighboring Seagram Building, which was hailed as an architectural masterwork upon its 1958 completion.Glass Tower
Plans call for the existing 425 Park, a commonplace stack of white-brick boxes, to be replaced by a 47-story glass tower with three distinct sections. Slanted glass will mark the transitions between the base and the middle, and middle and top sections. The bottom floors will extend over the 45-foot-high lobby, creating offices that will seem to float over Park Avenue.

"Our view in terms of mitigating the risk of building a building on spec is to build the best building we can," said Levinson, chief executive officer of developer L&L Holding Co. "If the market is weak, if you have the best building, you'll still get a premium."

This year marks the 800th anniversary of Magna Carta, Latin for Great Charter. The document, sealed by King John in 1215, helped launch the long struggle for democracy and civic rights around the world. Yet by many measures, traditional democracy at least the kind spread widely in the 20th century appears to be in trouble, leading some experts to ask if democracy itself is changing.
Consider these recent surveys:
For the ninth straight year, political rights and civil liberties across the globe have declined, according to Freedom Houses annual report. In 2014, democracy was under its greatest threat in the last quarter century in places such as Egypt, Thailand, and Russia. Another survey, called AmericasBarometer Study, found a precipitous drop of trust in elections in 26 countries in the Americas, from Chile to Canada.
Globally, public trust in government, business, media, and nongovernmental organizations evaporated last year, according to a survey of 33,000 people by the Edelman public relations firm. For the first time, nearly two-thirds of the 27 nations surveyed fell on the distrustful side of the Edelman Trust Barometer. Surprisingly, trust in NGOs fell for the first time.
In the United States, a federal survey shows a steady decline in 16 of 20 indicators of civic health. Fewer Americans, for example, say it is important to report a crime. In the last elections, only slightly more than one-third of eligible voters cast ballots.
Support for democracy remains high around the world. But, says political scientist Hendrik Wagenaar of the University of Sheffield, Satisfaction with the performance of their own democratic system does not tally with citizens political aspirations.
Professor Wagenaar, like many scholars, wonders if people are searching for new forms of civic association based on shared values and beliefs, often local in nature or through digital communities.
They feel that official democracy, the democracy that the media report on, does not do well in addressing these concerns, let alone solving them, he writes. People havent abandoned politics, but politics, they feel, has abandoned them. He cites cases in Europe of citizens coming together to organize social goods in voluntary attachments, such as in sustainable energy, rural transport, or access to the Internet. They create ties of mutual dependency outside of government.
Most people want to engage with democracy, he states. But not the democracy of political parties, powerful lobbying organizations, and the spectacle of politicians arguing about a political agenda that is not theirs. Citizens care for responsibility, respect and a measure of control. It is astonishing to see how ordinary people are then able to master complexity, resolve conflict and arrive at creative solutions.
In the US, one measure of this shift is seen among those under age 30 (Millennials). Unlike other Americans, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll, they have a much lower commitment to traditional civic duties such as voting, jury duty, or following the news media. Yet this age group does cite one civic activity, volunteering, as a very important obligation.
