Clean gutters are home maintenance essentials. Gutters should be cleaned at least twice a year, preferably in spring and fall. Use our tips below to make quick work of dingy downspouts and leaves that won't leave.
Pick a good dry day. It will be more comfortable. Dry, loose leaves and small twigs can be removed with a handheld blower. The traditional grab-and-drop method still works, and it requires no investment in equipment, electricity or gasoline.
You may encounter stubborn, caked buildups. If so, they may be easier to remove after a rain when damp instead of dry and hard. You can always use a water hose to dampen buildup.
Note: Never pressure wash your gutters. While seeming easy, you risk packing debris into the downspouts.
Inspect your gutters as you clean. Look for corrosion, holes, leaking joints or loose, missing or bent hangers. Mark problem areas with masking tape so you can find the problem spots quickly when you're ready for repairs.
Wear gloves to protect yourself from scratches. Keep your tools garden trowel, gutter scoop, whisk broom and rag in a bucket with a handle. Fasten the bucket to your ladder with a wire hook. This will prevent you from having to juggle tools or stuffing tools in your pockets.
Using a gutter scoop, start cleaning a stretch of gutter at the downspout area. This is where debris usually collects. Work your way up the gutter, putting the collected debris in a bucket. (It makes a great addition to your compost pile.)
It is a good idea to flush your gutters with a hose afterward. This will show how well the gutters are draining and will indicate any areas that are holding water.
You may need to reposition the gutter to create and maintain the proper drain slope. Gutters should slope downward at least 1/4" for every 5'-10' of gutter. You might be able to raise a gutter by bending its hangers. In the most severe cases, you will need to take down an entire section and remount the hangers.
Keep leaves, twigs and other materials out of your gutters by installing protective gutter guards. There are two types:

AMHERST Fundy Landscaping has been awarded the contract to develop a multi-purpose outdoor playing field at Dickey Park.
The project will cost $40,870 and will be funded by reallocating $25,000 that had been earmarked for the Robb Complex study with the remaining funding coming from operating reserves.
Deputy Mayor George Baker declared a potential conflict and excused himself from his council seat.
The work will include grading, leveling and seeding a playing surface of 195 feet by 450 feet that is suitable for soccer and football, as well as other uses.
Amherst announced last year that the infield at the park was going to be converted into a sports field at the request of the Cumberland Wolfpack football association. The organization had been using the soccer pitch on Winston Street for football games, but it wasnt usable for the older age groups.
Visiting teams indicated they would not travel to Amherst to play at Winston Street Field. Last year, a temporary solution was put in place that saw Fundy Soccer allow the football association to use the Church Street fields on the Dolan property.
While plans were to have the field at Dickey Park ready for late last season, the project was not completed on time.
The town is hoping the field will be completed sometime later this year, but its more likely it will be ready for use for the 2016 football season.
Amherst is also working with the Municipality of Cumberland and a local sportsplex committee to develop a facility on the former parade grounds in West Amherst. The project, expected to cost approximately $2 million, would include an all-weather turf field, two natural grass fields and a clubhouse that would include dressing rooms.

Its not yet spring, but it is harvest time for sod.
Theres plenty of zoysia on its way to market, but it's a different story for Bermuda grass this year.
We feel that were just low (on) our overall supply heading into the peak season of 2015, said Brad Hubinek, owner of Super Sod in Raleigh.
He said the entire sod industry in the Southeast is having supply problems with the increasingly popular grass. The problems began during the recession of 2007. When construction plunged, so did the demand for sod. Thats when a lot of growers switched their fields to other crops.
Now, construction has rebounded, and so has the demand for sod. Higher sod prices are expected this season as the industry works through the shortage.
The sod industry really follows construction very closely, said Grady Miller, a crop scientist at North Carolina State University.
His best advice to homeowners this season is to be patient.
But if they need grass, they may have to choose another grass other than Bermuda grass, Miller said.
Hubinek said zoysia is a good alternative.
Zoysia is a fantastic grass, a warm-season grass like Bermuda, he said. If a homeowner wants to have the best looking yard in the neighborhood, that's the option to go with.
