As Major League Baseball's Rob Manfred, now chief operating officer, succeeds retiring Commissioner Bud Selig on Sunday, MLB is heading into a new season in its best financial shape in years. In fact, some sports economists argue the sport is gaining ground financially on the National Football Leauge, the most lucrative and popular professional sport.
Revenue from MLB's 32 teams hit a record $9 billion in 2014, a 12.5 percent increase from 2013, thanks to increases in broadcast fees and gate receipts along with gains from the league's digital media business, Major League Baseball Advanced Media (BAM).

The service lets fans stream out-of-market games over their devices. Some experts consider BAM, which also has nonbaseball customers, to be among the most effective digital media business models and is MLB's fastest growing business. Indeed, MLB executives are optimistic about the league's growth prospects, although they declined to provide specifics.
"We believe we have the most valuable assets of any live sport, and we are looking to grow our top line significantly," MLB senior executive Bob Bowman recently told Sports Business Journal.
University of Michigan sports economist Rodney Fort argued that baseball will catch the NFL in the next two to three seasons because of BAM and the growth of regional sports networks. "They have been closing in on football for the past five or six years," Fort told CBS MoneyWatch. "Baseball is definitely going to catch football in the next few years."
Other sports economists aren't so sure. The NFL generates about $10 billion in revenue now and may hit $25 billion by 2027. And pro football's dominance of TV ratings isn't in danger from baseball or any other sport.

Baseball is swinging for the financial fences
SHOREWOOD A new contractor was selected by the Shorewood-Troy Library's Building Committee Thursday to resume work on its window-wall, a project that has experienced multiple delays since October.
Glen Ellyn-based RoMAAS Inc. was the lowest bidder to complete construction of the two-story wall on the north side of the building at a cost of $63,900, according to RoMAAS owner Alex Mihailescu. State requirement requires the lowest bidder be awarded the contract.
Library trustees, however, are making sure they know everything about the contractor this time after the previous one failed to finish the project. The hiring is pending referrals being in line and the outcome of an attorney's extensive background checks on the contractor and bonding company.
"I'm very worried about anything right now because of the past," Library Board President Phillip Besler said Thursday.
The window-wall was identified by architects and engineering consultants as an area in need of serious improvement. Evanston-based Continental Construction was hired to oversee the construction process, with a completion date of Oct. 24 last year.
However, Library Director Jennie Mills said Continental delayed the $80,000 project several times, and eventually ceased communication with the library and consultant TRIA Architecture.
TRIA representative Ron McGrath said RoMAAS has done several projects with TRIA and can be trusted to finish the project.
RoMAAS owner Alex Mihailescu gave a short presentation Thursday on his experience and how he would approach the remaining work, which includes drywall construction, painting, decorative details and window glass installation.
"Depending on how fast it goes, around March 13," Mihailescu said when asked about an estimated completion date.
"We've got to get moving on this," Mills said.

With robust historical districts as well as several new developments, Cumberland County is an amalgamation of both classic and new construction.
When it comes to fire incidents, all these types of construction, from new to old, have their benefits and drawbacks.
Trooper Eric Keebaugh, fire marshal for the Pennsylvania State Police Carlisle barracks, said fires can strike both older and newer construction, but building materials and safety codes are making structures more and more safe for individuals, giving them greater fire protection and the ability to get out of the homes.
Jeremy Wright, project manager with Cumberland Design and Building Company, said building codes have developed over the past few decades to make home significantly safer regarding fires.
There are two major ways that the building codes and builders have accomplished that, he said. One is the creation of fire ratings and the different separations that the building code requires you to have, and the second is requiring sprinkler systems in a lot of different types of buildings.
According to information complied by Carlisle Borough Building Inspector Mike Landis and Bruce Koziar, Planning/Zoning/Codes manager, quite a few of the buildings that were built prior to the 1950 time frame were wood construction and framed using continuous lumber floor to roofline. This is referred to as balloon framing.
This type of construction constitutes a major problem, since there is no fire stopping installed between the floor to roofline, Koziars information related.
There is no fire block that prevents the fire, if the fire starts in the basement, from traveling up to the attic, Keebaugh said.
Mike Rugh, former state police fire marshal and firefighter for Union Fire Company in Carlisle, said fire in these types of structures spreads very rapidly.
With the adoption of Building Codes and the administration of the codes came the improved wall framing method of platform construction, Koziar said. With the onset of Code Enforcement, which requires inspections of many facets of construction, buildings became inherently safer. Each floor is built onto itself, stacked one above the other with fire stopping built in at each floor. This limits the amount of wall that can burn within the structure.

The Raymond Planning Board has delivered a split decision on the town of Frye Islands proposed Raymond Cape park-and-ride facility, delaying once more approval of the long-awaited parking lot.
The board voted 3-3 on the application Jan. 14, with Greg Foster, Ben Krauter and William Priest in favor, and Robert ONeill, Steve Linne and Bruce Sanford opposed. The split vote effectively tables the application until the boards next meeting on Feb. 11.
According to Danielle Loring, Raymonds code enforcement administrative assistant, members of the board expressed concern that the proposal violates the towns shoreland zoning provisions relating to off-site parking lots.
In March 2014, the board denied the island towns original application for a 43-car parking lot and ring road on a 25-acre lot of undeveloped land across from Ferry Landing Road, on the grounds that the proposed four-way intersection with Cape Road and Ferry Landing Road was unsafe and that the proposed parking lot was too small. The advocacy group Friends of Raymond Cape fiercely opposed the original proposal.
On July 18, Frye Island submitted a substantially modified application for a 50-car parking lot on the same property, this time based on feedback from the Friends of Raymond Cape. The proposal, supported by the advocacy group, eliminates the proposed ring road in favor of walking paths, and replaces the 25-foot light poles with 12-foot lights.
There are reduced lighting levels in the parking lot, and weve attempted to retain the rural character of the neighborhood by minimizing features like paving and unnecessary lighting, said Mark Gray, Frye Islands design engineer.
The application also sets the parking lot farther back from Cape Road, in an effort to maintain the areas rural character.
But board members are concerned that the lot is set too far back, in violation of the shoreland zoning provisions, Loring said. According to the provisions, off-site parking lots shall be allowed if they are within 300 feet of the lot containing the associated permitted use, a measure intended to ensure pedestrian safety. In a memo to the board, the towns attorney, Mary Costigan, suggested that although the proposal does not meet the 300-feet standard, the board could waive the requirement, as the proposal provides a safe pedestrian route to the ferry.
Theyre kind of like splitting hairs, you know, Loring said, whether or not the standard of meeting the 300-foot access drive could be waived.
