Power to the people, says Karen, after cleaning up 1,000 damages

A West Cumbrian woman has advised people to stand up to big firms when service isnt up to scratch after she was awarded more than 1,000 for a damaged carpet.

WIPED THE FLOOR: Karen Williams, of Broughton Cross, with some of the correspondence from her battle

Karen Williams, 52, of Broughton Cross, near Cockermouth, hired a Rug Doctor carpet cleaning machine from Workingtons Morrisons store in September, but after using it her living room carpet shrank and her house was filled with a stench of rotting underlay.

She had to remove her carpet and despite four months of correspondence with both companies, she was getting nowhere.

Mrs Williams, a mother-of-two, turned to Trading Standards for help.

She said: Power to the people I say. Local people should be informed that the giants cannot walk all over you and our local Trading Standards officers are there to help.

When the carpet was damaged, Mrs Williams rang Morrisons.

The supermarket referred her to Rug Doctor, which said the hired machine had been recalled because there was a leak.

An independent assessor visited to look at the damage and Rug Doctor said it would not pay any compensation, as her carpet was too old.

West Greene to receive report on failed retaining wall

    - January 24, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

ROGERSVILLE West Greene School Board expects to receive a report by the end of the month from the consultant hired to investigate the cause of the collapse of a retaining wall at the new elementary school.

The board plans to discuss the consultants findings at its next building and grounds committee meeting Feb. 5.

The board approved several motions Thursday regarding the elementary project and recessed the meeting until 7:30 p.m. Jan. 29.

The retaining wall, which runs about 760 feet behind the new school and at its highest reaches 31 feet, collapsed Nov. 13. Nothing changed regarding the condition of the wall since then, Superintendent Thelma Szarell said Thursday.

The board in November accepted Michael Baker International LLC as an independent consultant to the district and architect. The company was asked to investigate the cause of the collapse and develop a plan to reconstruct the wall.

To review Bakers work, the board also hired its own peer review consultants, Pennsylvania Soil and Rock Inc.

The elementary school is nearly completed. Basically, everything is done, but there are a lot of very small things that still have to be addressed, Szarell said. The repair of a scratch on a finished surface, she said, is an example.

The district plans to begin using the building at the start of the next school year in August.

The board voted Thursday to pay Pennsylvania Soil and Rock Inc. $14,228.10 for work it completed between Nov. 18 and Jan. 3.

It approved a motion directing URS, the districts construction manager, to issue a construction change directive deleting certain work from the scope of work included in the agreement with Liokareas Construction Co. Inc., the general contractor.

Topper Drive homeowners seek compensation in court

    - January 24, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Topper Street property owner Dale Scott has launched legal action against the District of Mission and the builders of Heritage Marketplace. He claims his property has slipped and his house has been damaged after a retaining wall was built in 2010. None of the allegations have been proven in court.

A house a Mission man bought as an investment property more than eight years ago is now bankrupting him.

Dale Scott invested in a home on Topper Street with his mom in 2006, but neither of them ever lived in it. Instead, they rented it out and received some income from it annually.

But the rent Scott is receiving now is not enough to pay for engineers to help fix the property and lawyers to conduct a court challenge to those who he alleges were responsible for the damages done to his house and land.

Scott and two of his neighbours allege a retaining wall built just below his property for Heritage Marketplace in 2010 was not properly designed, inspected and constructed.

The defendants in the case are the District of Mission, the builders of the shopping mall on Stave Lake Street and 11 Avenue, and the engineers of the project.

According to the civil claim, the slope has slipped, which has caused the three properties above it to settle.

Scott and his neighbour Finn Nielsen claim the settlement of the slope has caused structural damage to their homes.

"Inside, the walls have cracked and the foundation has cracked in the back (of the house)," said Scott.

IMAX, elevated bike ride coming to new Carnival Vista

    - January 24, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Carnival Cruise Lines' newest cruise ship comes with a view - quite a few views actually, and that's probably why they named it the Carnival Vista.

The line revealed some major details of the 3,936-passenger ship that's due in spring 2016 including the first IMAX movie theater at sea and SkyRide, an open-air cycling experience in which riders are suspended above the upper decks for a view that's 150 feet above the sea.

"Carnival Vista celebrates the connection to the oceans on which we sail and gives our guests amazing seascapes around every corner and more ways to enjoy every moment of sun and fun during their cruise vacation," said Mark Tamis, Carnival's senior vice president of guest operations.

Also unique to the Vista will be a an expanded water park, the centerpiece of which will be a raft-riding slide called the Kaleid-O-Slide that sends riders down a 455-foot twisted, visually stimulating tube.

Two other new features will be a New England-inspired eatery called the Seafood Shack and the line's first onboard brewery connected to the RedFrog Pub.

The SkyRide is the latest salvo in above-deck options various cruise lines have offered to give cruisers a unique view of the ship and its surroundings. Disney Cruise Line gave us the AquaDuck water slide and Royal Caribbean offered up the North Star pivoting arm ride on Quantum of the Seas. Now Carnival's SkyRide lets riders tool around 800 feet of suspended track on a recumbent bicycle. It will be adjacent to the line's ropes course as part of the activity park that also includes a sports hangout with mini-bowling, ping-pong, arcade basketball and sports video games.

The IMAX theater will span three decks, offering the latest new films as well as classic IMAX offerings. It will be adjacent to the Thrill Theater, a short, theatrical 3D attraction that features moving seats and other special effects. Both will be part of the Carnival Multiplex, offering a concession stand with traditional moviegoing fare.

The line also plans to introduce indoor/outdoor seating for many of its dining venues similar to the Waterfront concept on Norwegian Cruise Line. Those venues include Seafood Shack, Fahrenheit 5555, Bonsai Sushi, Library Bar, Cherry on Top, RedFrog Pub and Havana Bar.

Havana Bar, which transforms at night into a Latin music dance venue, will also spill over to a new Havana Pool area with whirlpools and relaxation area. Havana Cabanas with private patios with chairs and hammock will be a new amenity as well.

Also new to accommodations will be Family Harbor staterooms that can hold up to five family members and access to the Family Harbor Lounge with large-screen TVs, games and complimentary breakfast and snacks and access to a concierge desk.
