Moss Building & Design will attend the Home + Remodeling Show at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly, VA this weekend from Friday, January 23rd to Sunday, January 25th.
The company has been a part of the Home + Remodeling show for several years and is pleased once again to be a representative of remodeling in Northern Virginia. Moss Building & Design remodels additions, kitchens, bathrooms, and basements. Their home improvement division, Moss Home Services, offers plumbing, electrical, handyman services, and more.
Moss will also present their HandyMOM 101 workshop at the show. These workshops empower women to tackle smaller items on their honey-do lists and are a way that Moss reaches out to a community that is not often a part of the remodeling and construction business.
The workshop is a hands-on approach to teaching women the right DIY skills needed to tackle home improvements. This weekend, Moss will be premiering a new workshop known as Power It. Tamil Nadu has just celebrated the harvest festival of Pongal a time when we enjoy the bountiful produce of crops such as rice, lentils and sugarcane. Pongal marks the end of the month of Margazhi, our winter, and welcomes the month of Thai, the start of spring when the sun starts its journey in the northern hemisphere and the days become longer.
As one growing season ends, another starts. Chennai has one more growing season till the scorching heat of summer begins, the heat that is natures signal that its time to let the soil rest. So what can we grow from January to April?
Cool weather crops like cabbages, cauliflowers, carrots, spinach will continue to grow until February. Tomatoes do well in this season too. But this is the time to sow things that are light to cook, eat and satisfy your thirst in the summer. Its time to start planting gourds, greens and melons.
Gourds such as bottle, snake, ridge, bitter, ash, pumpkin, and cucumber, and melons such as watermelon and musk melon can be started now too. These need well-drained soil and space to trail or climb, and are great plants for fences and sunny balconies with grills. And if you let them trail on your terrace floor, they also help cool the house. Heres a quick growing guide.
Soil
Its all about soil and seeds. Gourds do incredibly well in permaculture soil. Weve grown 3.5 foot long bottle gourds in the Cancer Institutes permaculture-raised beds. You can also use regular potting mix. Ensure the soil is loose, well-drained and well-mulched.
Seeding
Gourds and melons are sown directly. If you plan to start them in a different location, start them in containers that can be planted along with the sapling and will compost. Gourds dont do well with transplanting. There are many DIY, recycled or store-bought seed trays that you can start the seed in. When the seeds sprout and the true leaves emerge, plant the contents directly into the ground. At the Cancer Institute, weve started gourds in bamboo baskets and theyve done very well. Ensure there is enough space for the vine to run or climb.
Support
For bottle, snake, bitter and ridge gourds, try to ensure a pandal or trellis of some sort. This can be a fence, a simple trellis using poles and rope, or even a broken ladder. Its easier to spot the fruit in a pandal, but a fence or balcony railing will do just as well. Weve used ladders and even the sides of a broken baby cot to support gourds.

New Delhi, Jan 21:
CBI tonight arrested three people, including V Gowthaman, the then additional private secretary of Dayanidhi Maran, in connection with alleged allotment of more than 300 high-speed telephone lines to the then Telecom Ministers residence in Chennai which were extended to his brothers TV channel.
Besides Gowthaman, CBI arrested Chief Technical Officer S Kannan and electrician L S Ravi of Sun TV network, the agency said.
The three have been arrested to collect some crucial evidence which may come up during their questioning, CBI said, adding that they would be produced before a designated court in Chennai tomorrow.
CBI has named Maran and BSNL officials, including the then Chief General Manager K Bramhanathan and MP Veluswami in the FIR filed in October 2013 following a preliminary enquiry in which the agency claimed to have found enough material to proceed with a regular case against the former minister.
CBI alleged nearly 323 residential lines were allegedly in the name of the BSNL General Manager connecting the Boat House residence of Maran with the office of Sun TV through a dedicated underground cable during his tenure as Telecom Minister.
The probe had started in 2011, nearly four years after getting complaints that a virtual telephone exchange was allegedly set-up at the then Telecom Ministers house for facilitating data transfer from Sun TV.
The agency had recommended action to the then Telecom Secretary in 2007 but the department allegedly did not give its nod in the case, sources in CBI said.
CBI filed a preliminary inquiry in the case in 2011, they said.
The sources said these lines were not ordinary telephone lines but costly ISDN, capable of carrying huge data thus facilitating faster transmission of TV news and programmes across the globe.
