A GOOD PLAN: It takes time, and a bit of effort, but at the end of the process you will have a garden to enjoy for years to come.
Good gardens don't just happen; they're the results of careful planning and observation.
I suggest you get to know your property over the course of at least all four seasons before you commit to any major design changes or installations.
Observe the way the light hits your property throughout the year, how water flows and where additional privacy is needed. All this can only become truly clear once you've paid attention and studied these effects over time.
Designing your landscape equipped with that knowledge can then be one of the most rewarding projects you'll ever embark upon. And beginning that process at the start of a fresh new year is the ideal time to get going.
Here are five steps to creating a basic landscape design:
1. Create a base map
Sketch your existing outdoor area showing property lines, the house's orientation, driveways and paths. Start at the front corner of the house.
With an extra long tape measure, find the distance out to the curb and across to the nearest property line, and draw it onto graph paper. (A scale of 2.5 centimetres per 3m works well, but pick whatever works for you and stay consistent through the drawing.) The larger the grid paper, the easier it will be to write in all your plans and ideas.
Continue measuring from all corners of the house to the property's boundaries. Draw an arrow indicating north. Locate doors and windows, gas, electric and cable utilities, trees and shrubs and any neighbours' features near the property line that might affect your design, such as large trees, fences or buildings.

The 2nd annual Outdoor Living Expo will be held this coming weekend, January 24th, from 10am-4pm. The Expo will be hosted by California Pools & Landscape, a leader in Arizona's pool and landscape building market, and this years 2014 Ethics Award winner by the Better Business Bureau.
The Expo is scheduled to feature over 30 exhibitors and the latest in pool design, spas, landscaping, and outdoor living products. There will be design experts on staff to consult with attendees on planning, designing, or remodeling their backyards. Lenders will also be on site to discuss loan programs regarding pools, spas and outdoor living environments.
The Outdoor Living Expo offers free admission/parking, and the event will have prize raffles and giveaways. Exhibits will showcase water features, stone, decking, paving, artificial grass and putting green displays. The latest in gazebos, outdoor structures, outdoor kitchens and barbecues will also be on hand.

When Anthony Minko was designing his new office in Brooklyn, the estate planning attorney knew that it needed to feel calm and supportive.
After all, a place where people talked about what will happen after they die should feel secure.
So Minko who had studied the spend idly slow martial art tai chi hired RD Chin, a New-York based feng shui architect.
"The whole process started with our values in the law firm," Minko said said, "how we care about keeping families together across the generations,where grandparents can come with children and grandchildren."
"What surprised me was how practical the feng shui principles were," he said.
Literally translating aswind-waterfrom Chinese, feng shui has been practiced for at least 1700 yearsin Asia before becoming popular in the US in the 1980s.
Chin, whose lectures are on YouTube, argues that everybody can sense feng shui it's simply thehow-it-feelsquality of being in a place. If you feel inspired, creative, and capable in an office, then it's got some positive feng shui going on, but if you feel trapped, blocked, and insecure, then it's some poor feng shui, and your productivity will suffer as a result.
Vancouver-based feng shui consultant Rodika Tchi said that feng shui is "acupuncture for a space," a way of increasing the sense of harmony in a room.
So how can we use these principles to improve our work spaces? Here are some tips from Chin and Tchi:
"In most businesses, somehow we overlook the quality of air," Tschi said, because "we get used to poor quality air very quickly."
