Spectrum Window Cleaning; the innovative company, already well-known for their work pushing the boundaries in high-rise cleaning, are now the first commercial window cleaners anywhere in the world to have invested in their own 3D printing machine.
For Managing Director Lucian Ivan, it was a necessary progression. The crew here love a challenge, and after the recent success on the final cleaning of 25 Churchill Place at Canary Wharf, weve been attracting consistently bigger, bolder and more demanding proposals. As a result, the team are constantly devising solutions to increasingly difficult access issues; the problem it seems is that the current cleaning industry is often quite literally unequipped to deal with the flow of ideas. Making our own bespoke cleaning equipment has been the only way to achieve the standards we want."
Which means that today several high level projects in London are seeing results previously unattainable without the use of scaffolding or Cherry Pickers. Specialist architecture in the city is also feeling the benefit. Existing commercial cleaning equipment has recently struggled to cope with the character and angles of glass design features at a number of prestigious sites in the capital. Here Spectrum was able rescue efforts with their own bespoke tools, engineered from conception to reality entirely in-house. For Spectrum and their clients, the results are quite obviously priceless.
Necessity is the mother of invention, as they say, and Spectrum Window Cleaning could soon find they have their own line in commercial cleaning equipment. Its true," Lucian confirms, some of our designs were so effective we were fielding enquiries from the off. The need is out there so production seems a natural step." The company are currently in discussion with manufacturers, the real excitement, though, is still top secret. We are looking at a completely new method for cleaning windows; its unchartered territory, but the power 3D printing gives us is the possibility to achieve it."

The Florida Home Partnership is providing free water heater blankets to area residents as part of its continuing energy conservation efforts. Water heater blanket packages can be reserved, and then picked up at the partnerships main office at 201 14th Ave. SE, Suite H, Ruskin.
On average, water heating costs homeowners between $400 and $600 annually, said Earl Pfeiffer, the partnerships executive director. One way to cut this cost is to insulate the water heater, which can reduce standby heat losses by 25 to 45 percent.
Making these blankets available to the community is consistent with our mission of helping keep the cost of housing low, he continued. Energy efficiency is one major way to control home operating costs.
A short, six-minute video on how to install the blankets is available at http://www.flhome.org. While newer water heater models may not need the additional insulation, homeowners with models older than 10 years, that are warm to the touch or have an R value of less than 24, may.
The water heater blanket packages, including written installation instructions, are available while supplies last. Residents are limited to one blanket per home but residents with two tanks can request an additional package. Apartment and business owners may also make special requests to reserve packages.
Scheduled pick-up times are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Packages must be picked up within one week of the reservation, otherwise they may be redistributed without notice.
To reserve a package, call (813) 672-7889 or email sara@flhome.org.

A group of young volunteers spent the morning remembering Dr. Martin Luther King alongside a group of elderly New Yorkers, who experienced segregation and the Civil Rights movement firsthand. NY1's Lindsey Christ filed this report.
Their stories began decades ago all across the country. On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, residents of the Isabella nursing home came together to share some of those memories.
Like 102-year-old Naomi Headly, who described growing-up in Virginia before moving north as part of the Great Migration, into the Harlem Renaissance.
"We'd sit on the back of the bus and when you'd go to white people's houses, you know, we had to go through the back," Headly recalled.
Andetrie Smith experienced similar discrimination as a child in Texas.
"Whenever I was really thirsty and nobody was looking, my mother, she would give me whatever water fountain was near. And if it was the white fountain, she would tell me, 'This is the law, but it's wrong,'" Smith said.
While in seminary school, the Rev. Joseph D. Jenkins Jr. became involved in desegregating the Boston school system.
"They were throwing rocks, insults and we had t walk the kids to school," Jenkins said.
Listening to all this was a group of AmeriCorps volunteers. While the young volunteers say they grew up learning about segregation, civil rights and Dr. King's legacy, hearing the residents' stories about actually living through that era made for a particularly poignant celebration.
"When you can actually talk to someone who has lived that experience and feel what they feel, hear their specific story, it really sits with you and makes you realize you why we are doing this work," said AmeriCorps Program Director for the Children's Aid Society Sharifa Shorter.

Working out at the gym is great for your health, but it's also an easy place to pick up germs.
Some researchers are looking at what we wear, designing fabrics that could help keep us healthy and even kill bacteria.
Some studies show about one third to one half of gym surfaces have some sort of contamination.
"People are coughing, sneezing, there might be germs on their hands. They're using these machines, and there is the potential for spread," said Dr. Russ Greenfield, medical director for PurThread Technologies.
PurThread Technologies designs fabric that helps prevent the spread of bacteria, using silver in the material.
"There are different projects where its sprayed on or applies, but the newest kind is embedded into the fiber that can actually help prevent the spread of microbes by killing them on the spot," said Russ.
That's handy in a shirt for the gym, and not just to protect the person wearing it.
When you work out and you sweat, clothes start to smell really bad. One interesting effect of the new material is that it kills the bacteria that causes the odor.
You don't need a new wardrobe to fight germs at the gym. Always wipe down the machines.
We're going to trust our friends working out are doing the same, but we need to do that too, so after every use of a machine, wipe it down.

A large tree burst a three-inch water main when it toppled over in a Woodland neighborhood early Tuesday morning.
City crews are working to clear the tree and make repairs to the line, which has left five homes without water along Ashley Avenue.
Watch report:Large tree in Woodland crushes water main
The tree's limbs and branches extended into the middle of the roadway, which has been closed off.
When the tree fell overnight and cracked the water pipe, water spewed into the air, forcing utility workers to shut off water to the handful of homes.
Crews said they won't be able to fix the line until the massive pine tree is removed.
"The tree is the big hold up," said Woodland Public Works deputy director Rob Sanders."We cant get to the waterline, the waterline is actually about a foot behind the walk. So its laying right over the water line and thats where it broke."
Crews were called to the location several days earlier when the home owner noticed water boiling up from area near the base of the tree.
"I heard this gurgling and there was water coming out from the base of the tree," said homeowner Robin Bent."I called the city and they came right over. The line was broken and they fixed it."
Bent said she has been keeping a close eye on the tree and was making plans to some day remove the tree.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Since July, the city has collected $293,885 for the removal of just 39 trees, according to City Parks Department records.
And in the city's last fiscal year -- from July 1, 2013 to July 1, 2014 -- the agency took in $2.7 million for the removal of 275 trees.
This comes out to about $7,500 to nearly $10,000 per tree. And that doesn't include the actual cost of tree removal -- it's just the fee that has to be paid to the Parks Department.
That cost, Staten Island developers say, is so exorbitant that is hurts development and forces them to pass the cost on to customers.
"The cost is ridiculous. ...A 24-inch tree could have a value of upwards of $60,000. (Parks' formula) is an overly aggressive way of valuing trees," said Robert Kelly, an Island-based developer and broker/owner of Master's Realty in Oakwood.
He contends that the Parks Department's pricingso excessivethat, in some cases, it's prohibiting builders from developing projects in the borough, and hurting homebuyers or commercial real estate customers who have to dig deeper to cover the expense.
A LAWSUIT IS FILED
Last year, the Building Association of New York City filed a lawsuit against the Parks Department, demanding a review of the way the agency calculates a tree's "value." The case has been adjourned several times; the next court date isJan. 30 in Supreme Court, St. George.
Some of the delay can be attributed to the Parks Department change in venue request. The agency wanted the case moved toManhattan.
"We (the Association) felt this should be heard on Staten Island," said Kelly.

The first of two power outages in six Dunedin suburbs is expected from 9am tomorrow.
Delta spokesman Gary Johnson said the power to about 4000 electricity consumers in Abbotsford, Burnside, Concord, Fairfield, Green Island, Ocean View and Waldronville would be interrupted twice tomorrow to enable the safe removal of a fallen tree.
The tree, in a forest between Abbots Hill Rd and the Southern Reservoir, had fallen across high voltage power lines supplying the Green Island substation.
To enable the safe clearance of the tree, the power needed to be redirected from the Green Island substation to near substations.
From 9am tomorrow, some electricity consumers in the suburbs should expect a interruption to their power supply between 30 seconds and 60 seconds to enable the tree removal.
After the removal and the high voltage cable was made safe, there would be a similar interruption to the power supply later in the day.
"Apart from the two brief interruptions, we expect power supply to be on as usual.''
People using medical equipment that relies on electricity should ensure they were prepared for the power interruptions and if there was an immediate health threat to contact their health provider or call 111.
