CONCORD, N.C. -- Construction crews are working to convert an old furniture store in downtown Concord to an apartment complex, but developers say the end of state historic tax credits is keeping them from pursuing other potential projects.
Rehab Builders LLC has cleared out the former Heilig-Myers furniture building on the corner of Cabarrus Avenue and Church Street. Workers have erected the framing for 26 apartments on the two upper floors.

She remained active in her LakeOswego, Oregon congregationwhen her children were small, and prior to her ordination, was the interim director of Christian Formation at the church.
Of her career change, she said, "I don't think it surprised my children as much as my husband. We took the journey as a family."

LAPORTE | The courthouse in LaPorte has been around long enough to go from using kerosene lamps for lighting to the latest in environmentally friendly technology, geothermal energy.
If the county doesn't get its investment back from lower utility bills, the contract with Amaresco, Inc. calls for a full refund.
"That's what they say," said Jerry Cooley, LaPorte County's head of maintenance.
Ameresco is a leading independent provider of comprehensive energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions for facilities throughout North America.
Work began Tuesday on replacing all of the electrical wiring at the courthouse built in 1892.
New heating and cooling systems at both courthouses are included in the job estimated at $6.9 million.
The work at the courthouse in Michigan City erected in 1909 will begin in about two weeks, Cooley said.
The LaPorte courthouse has radiator heat that relies on a boiler heating water through original pipes that also will be replaced, he said.
The system that will be put in uses the temperature of the ground and air to help with heating and cooling, reducing energy usage.
Another $2.1 million will go toward remodeling the second floor of the LaPorte courthouse to house LaPorte Superior Court 3 now in the basement of the county complex.

Sean Goodsell Architects, who designed the MPavilion in Melbourne, are one of two Australian firms still in contention. Photo: Earl Carter
The Art Gallery of New South Wales has narrowed the list of architecture firms vying for its ambitious $450 million Sydney Modern project from 12 to five, and there are no Sydney firms in the running.
Two Australian firms are still in contention for the prestigious project - Kerry Hill Architects, based in Singapore and Perth, and the Melbourne-based Sean Goodsell Architects - but Sydney firm Candalepas Associates failed to make the cut.
The two Australian firms join Tokyo and Paris-based Kengo Kuma and Associates, Mumbai and Boston-based RMA Architects and Tokyo's SANAA, which designed Manhattan's New Museum of Contemporary Art Building, in stage two of the competition.
Confident: Art Gallery of NSW director Michael Brand says the Sydney Modern should be ready by 2021. Photo: Brett Hemmings
Stage one of the selection process was anonymous: the jury - which includes AGNSW director Michael Brand, Sydney architect Glenn Murcutt, Hetti Perkins and others - assessed high-level concepts submitted by each firm, without knowing from whom the concepts came.

"Only after we picked the five concepts were we able to reveal whose concepts they were," Dr Brand said.
He added that while no Sydney firms made the finalists lists, Sydney architects are represented in the jury and were involved in drawing up guidelines for the competition. There is also potential for local firms to work with the ultimate winner as the process moves forward.
