GRITTING manager Dave Rushton has told how he raised the alarm after spotting a furniture factory fire while carrying out a winter patrol in the middle of the night.
Quick-thinking Dave was out inspecting the rural roads around Leek when he smelt smoke before realising a blaze was sweeping though a building on Barnfield Road Industrial Estate.
Community highways liaison officer Dave, who has worked for Staffordshire County Council for 25 years, dialled 999 at 4am on Thursday.
An investigation into what sparked the fire is ongoing and the cause is expected to be known later today.
He said: When I am out checking the roads there is usually not another soul around so I am always extra vigilant and just get a sense when something isnt quite right.
I wound down the car window and thought I could smell smoke, which was clearly strange as this time of the morning so I decided to pull over and got out to take a closer look. Although, I couldnt see any flames or anything I could hear a strange crackling and knew instinctively it was a fire at the industrial park below.
I just pleased that I was there to be able to raise the alarm as the fire inspector said the blaze would have been even worse than it was if they didnt get there when they did.
More than 30,000 of timber used to make luxury garden products was destroyed in the blaze at Breeze House. Around 30 firefighters from Leek, Hanley and Sandyford smashed their way into the Sunnyhills Road building before spending around three hours tackling the blaze.
Significant damage was also caused to the roof but the costs of repairs is not yet known.

On the top of a hill in Shropshire, with panoramic views over the Severn Valley to the misty Welsh mountains beyond, there lies a magnificent temple of shimmering bling.
Hammer Hill is the house that Poundland built, a 15,000 sq ft mansion with 80 windows and five grand reception rooms, including a drawing room with a sprung dance floor edged with disco lights sunk into the blameless pale oak.
There is a panelled walnut dining room with an 18-seat table, LED ceiling lights that change colour, a bar, a baby grand piano, a swimming pool and a white Rolls-Royce parked outside by the electronically operated fountain.
Padding around in his socks is owner Steve Smith, the 51-year-old entrepreneur who made his fortune by launching Poundland in 1990, then selling it a decade later for 50 million. Steve is a self-made man who started on his parents Bilston market stall in the West Midlands as a nipper and worked his way up the hard way. He opened his first shop aged 18.

Instead of resolutions youre likely to break or expensive gym memberships you won't use, try out some quick moves from the ancient art of feng shui to help ensure this year is your best one yet.
Feng shui coach Susan Chan has been consulting clients on how to balance their lives for over 10 years. She gave Mashable insider tips that take minutes, with results that last much longer.
Your external world is a representation of whats going on inside of you, Chan says. When something in your home is off it affects your mood, its the internal and the external constantly going back and forth.

Take a second, pretend youre in an airplane and locate the exit nearest to you. If it happens to be behind you, Chan suggests you get that doorway in sight or else risk being energetically unsettled.
She calls the concept the command position. At one time, this meant you could see your enemies in case of attack; now it's translated to being in control of your life.
If moving your desk around isnt very realistic, try placing a small mirror on your desk so surprises will have nothing on you.

Pope Francis has electrified Roman Catholics in the United States with the open, accepting tone he has brought to the role, and his first visit later this year is expected to draw more than a million followers eager to set eyes on him.
The leader of the 1.2 billion-member church will also face a challenge in improving relations with conservative US Catholics, who have expressed dismay at his shift in focus away from issues like abortion and same-sex marriage, which the church has long opposed but Francis contends need not obsess about.
The city of Philadelphia began preparations more than a year ago for the pontiff's visit in September, at the end of the weeklong World Meeting of Families.
"What fascinates me is the degree to which he has captured the attention of Catholics and non-Catholics. I find myself in social meetings with non-Catholics talking about the Pope, and he's the subject of great hope," said Mark Mullaney, chairman of Voice of the Faithful, a lay Catholic organization founded in Boston in 2002 in response to the clergy sex abuse scandal.
"He's opened doors and windows that have not been open in a long time, and encouraged discussion."
Some 74 per cent of non-Catholics in America view Francis favorably, with some 93 per cent of Catholics reporting a favorable view, according to a 2014 poll by the Pew Research Center. Both findings were well above his 60 percent favorability rating worldwide.
Francis is also more popular with the roughly 76 million US Catholics than his predecessor, Benedict XVI, according to Pew, though not so beloved as John Paul II, who held the papacy for more than a quarter-century until his death in 2005. He was elevated to sainthood in 2014.
A vocal advocate of human rights, John Paul II drew crowds of over a million at outdoor events during his five formal US visits, while Benedict's 2008 trip was less grand in scale.
Francis has won praise for his decision to live in a simple Vatican guesthouse and not the palace his predecessors have called home for centuries. He has also captured Americans' attention by showing a more tolerant side of the church, famously answering a question on homosexuality: "If a person is gay and seeks God and has good will, who am I to judge him?"
Like his predecessors, Francis has used his influence to improve diplomatic relations between countries and played a key role in last month's restoration of US-Cuba ties. Francis wrote personal letters urging rapprochement to US President Barack Obama and his Cuban counterpart, Raul Castro, and allowed the Vatican to host secret talks. Before his visit to Asia this week, Francis urged a similar thaw between North Korea and South Korea.

Firefighters Brian Boyd, left, and Kristopher Lake grab a folding ladder from the back of a fire truck as they attend a fire call Jan. 16 at Sweet Williams Restaurant in Windsor. Also pictured is driver Chris Sullivan.
WINDSOR For the second time this week, firefighters were asked to respond to a possible fire at a local restaurant.
Deputy Fire Chief Jamie Juteau said the Jan. 16 early afternoon call was the result of a small electrical fire at the Sweet Williams Restaurant in Windsor.
Staff had reported seeing an arc and some fire come out from the top of one of their refrigeration units. They called 911, said Juteau, who was the first firefighter on scene.
He said the staff did the right thing by calling them in.
The fire at that point appeared to be out but we isolated the power to the units affected and checked it over with thermal imaging cameras, said Juteau.
Firefighters also checked the top of the unit to see if there was any extension of the fire.
The restaurant, located at MacLeod House, didnt have to close due to the fire as they had multiple storage units at their disposal.
We instructed them they should clear out that section of cooler and couldnt use it until the electrician was brought in to check it out, said Juteau.
