Countertops & Cabinets – Lawsons Moncton

    - January 17, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Comparing kitchen countertop materials is essential when building or remodeling. Choosing the right counter top can make all the difference. Not only do you want a countertop that is long lasting and visually appealing, you want to make sure it fits your needs. With that in mind here's an overview of five popular styles of counter tops.

Granite is a popular choice for kitchen countertops. Because it is a quarried stone, no two counter tops are the same. Granite is durable, stain resistant, and does not conduct heat or cold. It is somewhat porous, so it does require applying a sealant once a year to protect it. Counter top finishes are either polished with a smooth reflective glass-like surface; honed, which creates a matte surface; flamed to create textural interest or tumbled to resemble natural stone. Priced by the square foot, it costs anywhere from $70 - $300 per square foot installed, depending on the type and availability of granite.

Concrete is an unexpected choice for a counter top, yet one that might be right for your kitchen. Concrete counter tops are always custom-made and consist of 1- inch thick slab that rests on top of a wooden counter base. Color pigments are added directly to the concrete mix so it's possible to have a counter top in any color you desire. Finishes for concrete counter tops are similar to the honed surfaces used for stone. Textures vary depending on the aggregate ingredients, which may include anything from fine sand to tiny pebbles. Concrete counter tops require a penetrating sealer followed by a coat of wax, which must be reapplied every few months. Acidic substances, such as vinegar, will etch the surface if not wiped up immediately. In addition, concrete counter tops may develop hairline cracks over time. Concrete countertops range from $170 to $225 per linear foot installed, or about $100 per square foot installed.

Corian is the name brand for a solid plastic material permeated throughout with color and a particular pattern. Although it is man-made it often resembles stone, especially granite and marble. Corian is durable, heat resistant, and fairly scratch resistant, although a cutting board is still recommended. Minor stains or burns can be removed by using a non-abrasive scouring pad. Another advantage to Corian is thatthe seams are invisible. The installed cost of Corian ranges from $75 to $150 per linear foot.

Laminate is the least-expensive option for counter tops and has been around for many years. It is available in a range of patterns including faux stone, wood, and metal. Laminate is composed of a composite of numerous layers of plastic-coated paper, with the top layer exhibiting the desired pattern and color. The layers of paper are bonded to particleboard under conditions of pressure and heat. Laminate is very easy to maintain but is susceptible to scratches, which can't be repaired without replacing the entire section of laminate. It is not heat resistant and although quite durable, it may de-laminate or lift off the particleboard subsurface along the edges of the counter or sink if not properly maintained. Laminate costs about $10 a square foot installed.

Stainless steel counter tops are made from a metal alloy that makes them rustproof. Expensive and difficult to install, stainless steel counter tops are custom made and have no seams. They are placed over a wooden sub-base to prevent denting and minimize noise. A stainless steel counter top is often the first choice for serious chefs, or those who like clean ultra modern lines. The silvery-gray color of stainless steel is a neutral color that blends well into many types of dcor. Stainless steel counter tops are low maintenance, non-porous, and heat and stain resistant; however, fingerprints are very noticeable on the surface. A cutting board is recommended because stainless steel will dull knife blades with repeated contact. These counter tops cost about $85-$100 per square foot.

It starts to get a bit confusing, because at first glance, all materials appear to look alike. The main thing to remember is that solid-surface is all man-made; quartz is mostly organic (quartz, with about 7% binding resins added); and granite is all organic (for slab granite).

the following is a comparison chart for the thre most popular countertops.

North End house with beach access has European feel

    - January 17, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

When she was house hunting in 2003, Diana Abouzeid thought all she and her late husband, George, needed in Palm Beach was a cozy getaway.

After all, the couple already had an 8,000-square-foot family home at the Palm Beach Polo Club in Wellington when they began looking for a place on the island, where their youngest son, Andrew, was enrolled in Palm Beach Day School, today Palm Beach Day Academy.

We wanted just a small house in Palm Beach to use during the week, she explained.

But because she also wanted a newer home with storage space, an open floor plan and a yard, she ended up buying the late Judith Grubmans house at 1072 N. Ocean Blvd. On the North End, it stands on an oversize parcel at the corner of Orange Grove Road, one lot west of the beach.

The Mediterranean-style house had been built in 2000 and offered a little more than 7,500 total square feet. So while it was larger than the Abouzeids had originally set out to find, it was otherwise exactly what she wanted.

Its a good location, quieter up here, and has access to the beach, she says. My husband said wed sell the Wellington house, but we never did.

    Husband preferred beach

Between them, she and her husband had seven children and 18 grandchildren, so the Abouzeids opted to keep the Wellington house as a vacation home. But George always loved Palm Beach, anyway, said Diana, who splits her time between Palm Beach and Crans-sur-Sierre, Switzerland.

After her husbands death in 2013 and with Andrew grown, she is downsizing. That four-bedroom, four-bath house is listed at $6.5 million through agent Carole Koeppel of Sothebys International Realty. The house has a two-car garage and comes with deeded beach access.

The exterior features stucco walls, a tile roof, a front patio delineated by a stone balustrade and second-floor balconies. A frontispiece surrounds the main entry, flanked by doors and windows with fanlights above.

6 tips to make hardwood floor installation a success

    - January 17, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Provided by Networx.com

Hardwood floors are always in fashion. It's no wonder -- they are both handsome and functional. What's more, long-lasting hardwood is uncomplicated to repair and has the kind of good looks that only improve with age. To get your wood floor installation off to the right start, follow these 6 tips.

    1. Choose Where to Install Hardwood Flooring

Hardwood flooring brings a touch of coziness and class to your living room, dining room, bedroom, study, den, and man (or woman) cave. Folks who are in love with the look of real wood may also want to put these floors in the kitchen or bathroom. While this is possible, it's tricky: the wood must be sealed around its perimeter and protected with a special finish that is highly water-resistant, but will also allow it to breathe. Only install hardwood floors above grade -- that is, no more than 3 inches below the level of the ground to avoid an overly damp environment.

    2. Know the Types of Wood Flooring Materials

Solid wood flooring is available as strips (the commonest kind, which comes in only 3 set widths but variable thicknesses), planks (in a variety of widths, but just 2 set thicknesses), and parquet (wooden slats are held together to form a geometric pattern). It may be sold unfinished or prefinished. Look for a lifetime warranty. Because topnotch results require expertise to achieve, solid wood floors should be installed only by a licensed flooring contractor. Engineered wood flooring (as opposed to laminate, which contains no real wood) comes in the form of planks, made from several thin sheets of wood which have been laminated together.

    3. Choose an Installation Method

Compare installation methods based on the type of wood you will be using. Nail down is suitable for installing solid wood, either strips or planks, onto a wood subfloor. Staple down is similar to nail down, with the difference that it uses a pneumatic staple gun. Glue down is the method of choice for parquet or engineered flooring. Floating means the installation of wood flooring, usually of the engineered variety, on top of a layer of padding.

    4. Pick the Best Time to Install

If you are building a new home or doing major remodeling, be sure to leave the installation of your hardwood floor until the construction is almost done. Processes such as plumbing or cement work, which involve the use of water, put the flooring at risk.

Thrifty habits put retirement in reach for child-care worker

    - January 17, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

After devoting most of her working life to a rewarding but modestly paying career in child care, Darlene Bakes was understandably worried about her retirement.

Bakes, 62, hit the financial peak of her career six years ago, when she became the full-time director of the Parent-Child Center at Shoreline Community College. She currently makes $56,788 a year.

She doesnt have a deep investment portfolio loaded with securities and properties. Instead, her wealth is almost entirely in her Seattle house, built in 1928, and retirement-savings accounts from work.

When could she retire? How could she do it?

I was thinking about it a lot, Bakes said.

At that point, she volunteered for a free money makeover by a member of the Puget Sound Chapter of the Financial Planning Association. Bakes was contacted by Carlos Lopez, an Eastside private-wealth manager with Kansas-based Creative Planning.

Lopez examined Bakes goals and finances, and much to her surprise declared her financially independent, which means she has the resources to support herself throughout retirement.

For Bakes, working is no longer a necessity, but a choice.

How did she do it? Lopez said Bakes built a solid nest egg by controlling her expenses, taking full advantage of retirement-saving plans at work and saving money whenever possible.

She saved diligently, despite her circumstances, Lopez said.
