'Plumbing' the depths at Mendocino College

    - January 17, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

For the past four years, Mendocino College has been developing and growing its Sustainable Technology Program, with ever-increasing interest from students and a need to expand the curriculum.

This semester, staff has responded with a brand new course Introduction to Plumbing, designed to enhance and complement the existing classes.

"All our classes have been very popular. Students have been asking for this course for quite a while," explains Jennifer Riddell, Sustainable Technology Program coordinator.

The dual-course will be co-instructed by two individuals, each bringing a unique level of mastery to the course. Anna Birkas is a hydrologist, green builder and owner of Village Ecosystems, and Sam Halstad, affectionately known as "Sam the Plumber," is a 38-year veteran in the plumbing industry and well-known by longtime residents and businesses.

"This will be a dual-purpose class," says Riddell. "Sam has probably plumbed half the businesses in town, and Anna has a strong background in hydrology. They're going to combine their backgrounds, teaching traditional and alternative plumbing, and how these processes connect to green building," she continues.

"We have the use of an old wreck of a demonstration house. Our long-term goal is to turn it into a showpiece, displaying what we can do," says Riddell. The house was the long-ago dwelling for the college caretaker, built sometime in the 1930s or '40s.

"We're going to be redoing some of the plumbing in the demo house, starting the kitchen remodel, teaching leak detection and pre-heating water under the sink to make home plumbing more sustainable," says Riddell.

The college received a grant for water conservation, which will be used to fund some of the demonstration projects that will take place during the course. Birkas will instruct students in the installation of greywater and rainwater catchment systems.

"We've been getting it down to the sticks, bit by bit," notes Riddell. Hands-on construction work on this house and another tiny house located on campus help students develop the trade skills necessary for future employment in the construction industry.

"We want students to come out with skills that are very desirable to contractors," she continues.

Kitchens To Go Launches New Blog Post to Streamline Commercial Kitchen Renovations

Serving up the right advice can help keep commercial kitchen renovations pain-free, publishes kitchens-2-go.com

Naperville, IL, United States of America January 14, 2015 /MarketersMedia/

Reports from the construction industry indicate commercial kitchen remodeling oversights can set businesses back an estimated $50,000 per project in additional labor and materials alone. This figure does not include revenue forfeited due to construction delays and diverted customers. Profit losses of this nature could render businesses in the food service industry unable to recover from their mistakes. Having seen first-hand the devastation resulting from such developments, Ralph Goldbeck of Kitchens To Go has launched the renowned kitchen development solutions companys latest blog post, detailing 5 important pitfalls to avoid when embarking upon a Commercial Kitchen Remodel or renovation.

Said Goldbeck, The information in this post can save institutions a ton of money, not to mention a bunch of time. Those just planning on doing it the easy way with phased construction owe it to themselves to explore their alternatives. What if they have to close off part of a street, or they have to deal with any issues with historic properties? There are many different issues to consider. After viewers see our expertise and our list of commercial clients, just like their institutions, we hope theyll contact us to discuss their needs further. But even if they dont, we hope theyll read the post so theyre informed.

For schools, hospitals, military bases and other large-scale food service operators, renovating their cooking and serving areas is generally not optional, and often years overdue. In addition to taking advantage of the latest technology in the industry to support their staff and raise the caliber of service and experiential quality for those they serve, these facilities must remain up-to-date in order to pass routine inspections and meet all applicable building and safety codes. These same remodels that are designed to keep them in business, however, can also drive them out of business if not executed properly.

Facilities often cannot afford to simply shut down for months while their renovation project is underway. Some choose to outsource their meal production to a catering company or contract managed provider; however, this route can place an extra 20 to 30 percent strain on their budgets in addition to the cost of renovation. Among the hints provided in the new blog post found at kitchens-2-go.com, is making use of a temporary commercial kitchen to reduce expenses and downtime.

Concluded Goldbeck, Anyone looking into this type of project knows every facet of the job may not go as smoothly as they intend. At Kitchens To Go, we specialize in providing both short and long-term temporary kitchen solutions. Our new blog post is just the latest step in our efforts to help streamline the renovation process for commercial kitchens and support the individuals that lead them.

Senate DFLers criticized over Capitol space stalemate

    - January 17, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Skylights are exposed after decades of being hidden behind a dropped ceiling in Senators' offices at the State Capitol in St.Paul, where construction will alter what visitors see when they visit, photographed Monday, December 30, 2014. (Pioneer Press: Scott Takushi)

The leader of the Democratic-Farmer-Labor caucus in Minnesota's House of Representatives joined Republicans in criticizing Senate DFL plans for Capitol office space Friday.

Members of the Senate DFL caucus want committee chairs to have offices in the Capitol building after its renovation next year, in addition to their space in the Senate office building under construction right now.

Republicans, never champions of the office building to begin with, have pushed back -- resulting in a stalemate that's delaying the final phase of the Capitol renovation.

House DFL leader Paul Thissen doesn't have a major role in that decision, but he publicly opposed the Senate DFL plan in a Friday news conference.

"I've never quite understood why... (chairmen) would want to have an office in the Capitol when all the members they work with are over in this other building," Thissen said. "Tom -- Sen. Bakk's -- idea of the Senate office building was that it would create this more collegiality, it would create this ability for people to work together. Having people in that building I think accomplishes what Sen. Bakk rightly was thinking about as a purpose of that building."

House Speaker Kurt Daudt, a Republican, has to sign a deal over Capitol space with Senate Majority Leader Tom Bakk, a DFLer, as well as Gov. Mark Dayton, Attorney General Lori Swanson and Chief Justice Lorie Gildea.

That deal was supposed to be done by Thursday, to allow the final phase of Capitol renovation to begin.

Construction crews can adapt to a delay of up to a week by focusing their work on existing phases of the renovation. But if Daudt, Bakk, Dayton, Swanson and Gildea haven't reached a deal by next Thursday, work crews could leave the project for other jobs. That process could cost the state $680,000 per month.

The $273 million renovation project is expected to be completed in 2017.

Thuraiyur municipal office ready for inauguration

    - January 17, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Work on the construction of a new building for the Thuraiyur municipal office on Perambalur Road has been completed at an estimate of Rs. 3 crore. The work which commenced on April 2013 under the Operation and Maintenance Gap Filling Fund scheme has been completed well ahead of schedule.

The new building has a plinth area of 7,762 sq. feet on each floor and has ground plus two floors. The new building will have all basic amenities for members of the public and municipal officials. The ground floor will have tax-collection unit, birth and death certificate issuing unit, and the municipal engineers office. The chairmans chamber and the council hall will come up on the first floor, which will also have an office room for the commissioner.

The present building of the municipal office, though located near the bus stand in the heart of the town, is too cramped, say sources. The building too has been ill-designed. Accumulation of tyres and tubes seized as part of the anti-dengue drive across the town has been adding to the buildings woes, the sources said. The new building will be inaugurated after the lifting of the model code of conduct currently in force in the district.

Outdoor workers keep moving to stay warm

    - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Construction workers have continued their outdoor building projects in Marshall County despite this winters harsh temperatures.

People who have to work outside should wear lots of clothing and keep moving, local contractors say.

A warmup is expected this week, with temperatures reaching the mid-50s by the weekend and settling into the upper 40s early next week. That should make outside working conditions more tolerable.

During the cold snap, some contractors moved their work indoors, but others continued outdoor projects.

To keep warm when working outside, the crew members dress as warmly as they can, Fox said.

When it is extremely cold, the production level slows down, he said. We have quite a bit on the books, and when spring hits, we have some siding, roofing and window replacement projects scheduled on places hit by the storm last October.

JD Construction, Marysville, has two custom homes, two commercial projects, two agriculture buildings and remodeling projects under way in addition to construction work at Fort Riley.

Co-owner Jarrod Smith said the frame crew at Fort Riley moved inside to help the trim crew during the cold weather.

Work continues on the outside construction projects in the county despite the cold weather, Smith said.

We want to keep the customers satisfied, he said. We have heaters in our work trailers. If it is really cold or snowy, the crew moves inside to build headers, help trim crews, hang insulation or do other indoor work.

Linksys PLEK500 power-line networking review: Pricey for its performance

    - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The adapters in the Linksys AV2 networking kit were the only ones in their class to be outfitted with three prongs (the Zyxel AV2 MIMO adapters do, too, but theyre MIMO adapters). Avoid these if your home doesnt have grounded wiring, because you wont be able to plug them in. Whats more, their chunky form factor (they have a smaller footprint than D-Link's DHP-601AV, but the Linksys are thicker) makes it difficult to use the second outlet in a duplex.

The Linksys performance was almost identical to that of D-Link's AV2 adapters, between 65- and 70 Mbps, with good-quality video streaming. And like D-Link's, the Linksys adapters have LEDs to show connections to power, a power-line network, and an Ethernet device, plus passwords and push-button security options.

The Linksys PLEK500 HomePlug Ethernet adapters deliver a mediocre price/performance ratio.

Linksys does provide a pair of five-foot Ethernet cables (D-Link's were much shorter, but other vendors use longer cables) and an installation CD (which many people might not be able to usemy notebooks don't have optical drives).

Linksys must think these extras are precious, or maybe it just has an outsized opinion of its own brand: The kit's $130 MSRP is half again as much as that of the D-Link kit, and its higher than any of the HomePlug AV contenders. The price difference narrows on the street, but its still tough to justify the premium if longer cables and a CD are the only significant advantages.
