A couple of weeks ago, someone living in the outskirts of Brookline got very lucky.

A passerby noticed smoke coming from the front porch and called for help, and fire damage was confined to a small area of the porch.

The problem was wood ashes a common cause of winter fires when they arent disposed of properly, Brookline Assistant Fire Chief Scott Knowles said.

January is a peak month for house fires, and local fire officials have some tips for avoiding the devastation of a winter fire.

These fires are usually caused by heating equipment, and on average, wood stoves, fireplaces and other forms of alternate heat are involved in more than 60,000 U.S. home structure fires a year, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

While these numbers are frightening, nearly all of these fires are preventable, J. William Degnan, state fire marshal, said in one of his recent newsletters.

Fire Station 71 Mosaic a Real Piece of Work

    - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Even though traffic on Pacific Coast Highway whizzes by Point Dumes newly rebuilt county fire station at speeds over 50 mph, its hard to miss the new tile mural out front.

The vibrantly colored work of art is eight feet tall in some spots, 45 feet long and depicts Malibu scenery while wrapping around a corner of the new station. Tapestry of Dreams begins with a brightly colored rolling carpet that turns into the scenery of Malibu.

I had to be respectful about not doing something too crazy, local tile artist Matt Doolin said. Im surprised at how far they let me go with the bright colors.

Doolin, co-owner of Topanga Art Tile, spent over eight months designing, creating and installing the new mural. When the county first sent out requests for proposals to artists for the project in 2012, Doolin said he thought, Wow, this is perfect for me, even though he knew hed have plenty of competition.

I sent a very passionate letter of interest that got me in the door, Doolin said. It referred to the local community, the fact that Ive grown up here and that Im connected to the local environment by spending a lot of time in Malibu surfing, hiking and camping.

Doolin also thought it helped that Topanga Art Tile was well known locally after being founded by his mother in 1978, and that he also designed a countyproject for the Topanga Library in 2006.

Dozens of contenders for the art project were given the opportunity to look at drawings of the future fire station before submitting proposals. The county encouraged submissions by tile artists because of Malibus history of manufacturing art tiles, and because of the tilework in the historic Adamson house.

It took a committee of 12 people to review the proposals, including members of county administration, the Malibu community, contractors and the fire department.

Nature was the big theme that everybody wanted sun, sand and surf, Doolin said. Many times, the theme [for fire station art] is firefighters fighting a fire, and they really wanted something else.

Malibu Arts Commission member Scott Hosfeld said he really liked the fact that L.A. County allowed them to be part of the vetting process. He thinks the finished mural is gorgeous.

What makes pancreatic cancer so aggressive? New study sheds light

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - New research from the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center helps explain why pancreatic cancer is so lethal, with fewer than a third of patients surviving even early stage disease.

The researchers found a gene known to be involved in nearly 90 percent of pancreatic cancers promotes cancer growth and spread. The gene, ATDC, plays a key role in how a tumor progresses from a preinvasive state to an invasive cancer to metastatic cancer.

"We know that patients with the earliest stage of pancreatic cancer have a survival rate of only 30 percent. This suggests that even in that very early stage of invasive cancer there are already cells that have spread to distant parts of the body," says study author Diane M. Simeone, M.D., director of the Pancreatic Cancer Center at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center.

"This study sheds important light on what it is about pancreatic cancer that makes it so aggressive early in the game," she adds. The study appears Jan. 15 in Genes and Development.

Researchers used a mouse model to replicate pancreatic cancer as it appears in humans. They also studied pancreatic cancer tissue samples and samples of pre-invasive pancreatic lesions. They found ATDC was expressed in a subset of the pre-invasive cells and played a role in the development of pancreatic cancer stem cells, the small number of cells in a tumor that fuel its growth and spread. This suggests that ATDC promotes a tumor's invasiveness and spread early in the course of disease.

The researchers suspect that ATDC may be a potent drug target. No drugs currently exist to target this pathway in part because researchers do not understand the crystal structure of the protein. Simeone's team, working with the University of Michigan Center for Structural Biology has made crystals of the protein and begun to create a three-dimensional structure that they can use as a model for drug development.

Preliminary data suggests that ATDC may also play a role in other cancer types, including bladder, ovarian, colorectal and lung cancers and multiple myeloma. But, Simeone notes, it's particularly critical to find new treatment options for pancreatic cancer. About 46,400 Americans will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year, and more than 39,000 will die of the disease. Pancreatic cancer is expected to become the second-leading cause of cancer death in the United States by 2030.

The oil price crash has sparked fears of widespread job cuts as industry giant BP shed 200 staff and 100 contractors.

Joining Shell, Tullow and Premier in announcing a shake-up of operations, BP said the job cuts apply to onshore roles not offshore operations.

Politicians in Westminster and Scotland are being pressed to take urgent action as BP announced the job reductions at a briefing today at the firm's North Sea headquarters in Aberdeen.

Oil price crash: Dramatic fall has caused upheaval on world markets but lower petrol costs are expected to drive a consumer boom that ultimately helps the economy

Other firms under the cosh include Tullow Oil, which today wrote off 2billion of exploration work and cut investment amid expectations of job cuts, Royal Dutch Shell which has axed a 4.3billion project in Qatar, and Premier Oil which slashed spending by 40 per cent and wrote off nearly 200million yesterday.

New Screenflex Moveable Acryclic Wall, a Portable Clear Room Divider, Provides Division with Vision Where Needed

    - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Lake Zurich, Illinois (PRWEB) January 15, 2015

Over the past few years, airports, schools, and businesses have reexamined safety procedures and protocols within their buildings. Many have discovered the importance of establishing designated boundaries for areas that are recognized and managed with a clear view to those walking in or nearby those areas. However, many face fiscal limitations with construction or found they have limited space in their existing facilities that are sometimes 15-20 years old.

In response to this growing need for a clear division, Screenflex Portable Room Dividers has created a sturdy clear acrylic portable room divider in two lengths; a 3'4" single panel unit or a 10'0" three panel unit. These freestanding units are made of 3/16" OPTIX Acrylic surrounded by black anodized extruded aluminum channel framing for stability and structure.

"Our research has shown that acrylic is a safer option for clear panels versus glass wall partitions. Upon a forcible impact glass will shatter creating a greater risk where acrylic will fracture, but remain intact within the aluminum frame," comments Screenflex President John Maas.

In contrast to other dividers, Screenflex Clear Room Dividers arrive fully assembled and ready to use. Hinges connect the clear panels together allowing the unit to be arranged as a straight wall or to form a corner at the hinge. This makes it easy to create designated security areas and boundaries requiring control for security or safety purposes; such as group luggage storage, airport screening area, library study area or a break room to name a few. A secure locking option is available to connect the panels to additional clear units or to add to fabric or vinyl covered Screenflex Room Dividers.

Standard on every Screenflex Room Divider is self-leveling caster wheels Which provide exceptional stability on uneven floors. Once the unit is in place, the corner casters can be locked to secure the divider into position. Because the panels are 6'2" tall, they can easily roll through a standard doorway by a single person for another use or for storage.

"In addition to security applications, the clear divider is ideal for creating temporary areas that double as collaborative learning environments. The wet erase function is ideal for informal group discussions, presentations, and project work. The crystal clear moveable acrylic walls are an economical solution to a division need versus costly glass dividers", adds Mike McClure, Screenflex Vice President of Sales.

Screenflex Portable Clear Room Dividers can also serve as a safety barrier, a shield against drafts and noise, to create cooperative learning environments in the classroom, or funnel visitors in a certain direction. The clear divider can even shield manufacturing equipment from visitors while maintaining sight lines and create positive social interaction among users of private and public spaces.

Screenflex is the premier provider of high-quality portable room dividers and continues to be a trusted supplier among facility managers. To find out more, please visit Screenflex.com.

$11.4M hotel, restaurant under construction in Polson

    - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

POLSON A new $11.4 million Red Lion hotel is under construction in Polson, and will have an attached conference center and a MacKenzie River Pizza Co. grill and pub.

The development was financed with help from new market tax credits provided by the Montana Community Development Corp., headquartered in Missoula.

This project will create 42 new full-time jobs in Polson, said Melanie Calahan, director of marketing for the MTCDC. In addition to jobs, the conference space and rooms give Polson more resources for attracting regional events, which will bring more economic activity into the community.

The three-story, 80-room hotel is the fourth such project that the nonprofit organization has helped finance in western Montana, along with the Mission Valley Aquatics Center, which is just down the street from the new Red Lion, and both the Poverello Center and the Garlington, Lohn & Robinson office building in Missoula.

The total amount of new market tax credits provided for those four projects is $37.2 million, which is a sizable portion of the $185 million that the community development corporation has provided for projects in Montana since 2009.

All of these projects make an impact on low-income people and/or places, whether thats providing jobs or emergency homeless shelter, Calahan said. The NMTC program also redirects mainstream financial support to Montana (and Idaho) that wouldnt have made it here otherwise, and it leads to significant change that wouldnt have happened otherwise.

Dave Glaser, president of the MTCDC, said the developers of the new hotel/restaurant in Polson approached him about a year ago.

New market tax credits provide a subsidy to projects that are in low-income areas to provide jobs and economic vitality, he said. Sitting down with the developers, we learned that Polson in particular is trying to build up their year-round tourist visitation. A stand-alone hotel by itself isnt enough to make that attractive, and by putting in a restaurant and conference center it achieves those goals.

Polson now has received more new markets tax credit from MTCDC than any other small town in Montana and Idaho.

Rick Orizotti, who is developing the hotel along with Herb Leuprecht, said that the new hotel is expected to be completed in June.
