'Romancing plumber' sentenced to 18 months in jail for $560K in fraud

    - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

An Iraqi refugee convicted of defrauding victims of more than $560,000 was sentenced Tuesday to 18 months in jail, and three years probation.

Faris Namrud, known as the "romancing plumber," pleaded guilty in November to fivecounts of of fraud over $5,000.

Judge Joseph Galati ordered Namrud to undergo counselling, and barred him from using aliases, issuing cheques, or operating any business.

He also ordered Namrud to repay his victims the more than half million dollars they're owed, "in the unlikely event he wins the lottery."

The full sentence was 32 months, but the judge gave Namrud 14 months credit for time already served.

Iraqi refugee Faris Namrud, who often poses as an Italian under the name Franco Nemro Loranzo, has already served jail time for romancing victims out of hundreds of thousands of dollars in the past. (CBC)

A Vancouver woman who lost $86,000 to Namrud is disappointed he won't be serving more time.

"Given his history and his character I think he'll just be right back at business as usual and defrauding people again," said Kasandra Harfield.

"The whole reason I came forward in the first place was to try and prevent that."

Last year, CBC Investigates exposed Namrud's long history of fraud, and the accusation he ripped off Harfield.

McCall Service Now Offering Pest Control in West Georgia

    - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Albany, GA (PRWEB) January 15, 2015

In the pest control industry, McCall Service has earned a reputation for excellence. They have been on the cutting edge of pest management technology since 1928, and offer thorough solutions for bed bugs, termites, mosquitoes, general bug exclusion, and wildlife protection. So it seems right to ask, "Is there a McCall Service near me?" Fortunately for many Georgians, the answer is now, yes. Recently, McCalls branched out into the Savannah Georgia region, and has now added West Georgia to their service area. This is good news for residents of Albany.

Bed bugs are a humiliating and reputation damaging insect, and McCall Service has a track record of fully eradicating these bugs from homes and businesses using chemical sprays and state of the art heat treatment equipment. Their skilled technicians work quickly and discreetly to get in deep where bed bugs hide.

In the United States, termites do $2 billion in property damage each year, and with the temperate climate in Georgia, termites can be a danger to property owners all year round. By setting up monitoring stations, and using the Sentricon Termite Colony Elimination System, McCall Service eradicates termites before they can cause damage to property.

When mosquitoes, bugs, and wildlife come to spread disease, illness, or parasites, like lice, Georgians can know that their families and their homes will be protected. McCall Service partners with families to provide professional care and modern pest management that fully excludes these dangerous pests from homes and business properties in a way that protects residents, and the environment. Residents won't have to fight with flu-type symptoms, strange respiratory allergies, and hard to get at home repairs, if they have McCall Service on the job. Is there anything more important that protecting the health of families and the equity of homes and business in Georgia? McCall doesn't think so.

Beaverton man arrested after car and foot chase in Cedar Hills

    - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Washington County sheriff's deputies arrested a 36-year-old Beaverton man late Wednesday after a brief pursuit in the CedarHills area.

Michael Peterson failed to stop about 9:30 p.m. at a red light at Northwest Barnes Road and Baltic Avenue, according to police.

Deputies then tried to stop the car, but Peterson took off on Oregon 217 and into a Raleigh Hills neighborhood. Peterson failed to negotiate a curve and slammed into landscape boulders in the front yard of a Southwest Woodward Way home.

Peterson, police said, then took off on foot, tossing onto the ground what police later learned was a stolen -- and loaded -- handgun. Deputies caught up to him as he tried to jump over a fence.

Deputies found a second loaded handgun in the Acura Peterson had been driving. The car, said police, was filled with dozens of items, such as GPS systems, car stereo systems and other valuable items -- all possibly stolen. Police seized the items and plan to check them against stolen property reports.

Peterson was booked into Washington County Jail on accusations of felony and misdemeanor attempt to elude, felon in possession of a firearm, first-degree aggravated theft, unlawful possession of a firearm, reckless endangering, felony driving with a suspended license, possession of methamphetamine, reckless driving, hit and run, criminal mischief, criminal trespassing and a felony parole board warrant.

He is being held without the possibility of bail.

Research team invents new chemical detector

    - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A team of researchers at the University of Delaware's Catalysis Center for Energy Innovation (CCEI) recently invented the Quantitative Carbon Detector (QCD), a new device that identifies and quantifies chemical compounds in complex mixtures such as fuels, oils, chemicals, pharmaceuticals and food. This instrument will have a significant impact on the amount of time required for chemical analysis.

The center's research focuses on discovering new technologies for the production of renewable fuels and chemicals using lignocellulosic (non-food) biomass as feedstocks.

A major challenge in the catalytic conversion of biomass to fuels is the molecular transformation that requires detailed and simultaneous characterization of complex mixtures containing hundreds of chemical compounds.

"The QCD is really the holy grail of chemical analysis," says Paul J. Dauenhauer, associate professor of chemical engineering and materials science at the University of Minnesota and co-director of CCEI. "Utilizing this new technology allows us to focus our effort on catalytic science rather than tedious and expensive chemical calibrations."

Using an integrated microreactor design, multiple catalytic reactions break down complex chemical mixtures into single compounds, significantly reducing the time and effort required for characterization analyses. Microchannels that surround a built-in heating system allow for high-resolution chemical detection as well as integration of hardware and software within existing chemical analysis devices.

The research was published in the January issue of the journal Lab on a Chip, a publication of the Royal Society of Chemistry.

"A major challenge in any energy and fuels laboratory is identifying the chemicals within liquid substances," says Alex Paulsen, CCEI researcher and co-inventor. "After being identified, each compound must be quantified, and this can be a time-consuming procedure for complex mixtures. By breaking down the mixtures into single compounds, the QCD simplifies the process so we have more time to focus on research."

This new technology, Polyarc QCD, is currently being developed by Activated Research Company (ARC), a new start-up based in Minnesota. Pre-orders for the device are being accepted.
