Westlake interior designer Barrie Spang creates rooms that reflects clients' tastes, not hers

    - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

If you have ever used an interior designer, what was your experience? Tell us in the comments section below.

CLEVELAND, Ohio -- Interior designer Barrie Spang loves building a personal connection with clients so that they feel like family.

"It's a very intimate business. You're dealing with their home, their money, their family," said Spang, 42, who is part ofLee Meier Interiors in Westlake.

Spang, who lives in Rocky River, has been interested in dcor since childhood. Let's get to know her in this 5-Minute Q&A profile.

Q: What does an interior designer do?

A: I always say that we can help you as much or as little as you need, from helping with ideas with a room, all the way to a complete renovation or building of a home. We help with any aesthetic decision -- colors, textures, furniture layouts and changes that can happen to a room.

Q: When do people know they need an interior designer?

A: Anytime you feel stuck, too hesitant to move forward or too scared to start. Sometimes people make that one expensive mistake because they did it on their own, and they decide to bring a professional in because the sofa doesn't fit through the door.

I think people are intimidated by interior designers. They're not sure how we're paid or if it's going to be too expensive. I think we actually end up saving people money in the long run, because we come up with a good plan and keep people on track.

Q: What are major mistakes that people make on their own?

Expert tips on choosing paint colour

    - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Mike Baker

BORING?: Is white paint a dull, safe choice? Not when paired with bright furnishings like this!

It can be rather overwhelming hitting up the hardware store to choose a new interior paint colour for your home.

There are literally thousands of potential colours, and how many shades of white can there be?

Before you throw your colour charts in the air and storm out of the shop (while convincing yourself that the faded mustard-yellow walls in your lounge are actually fine) take note of these six tips from the experts.

    123rf.com

OVERWHELMED: So many choices! How to decide? By following these tips from the experts.

    1. Where to start?

At the beginning of course. Dulux colour expert Louise McKenzie-Smith says that you should look at the existing colours in your home and decide on the ones you'd consider working with.

"For example, do you have a piece of artwork you really like, flooring that will need to be worked with (not against), and furniture that will be staying? This will help narrow down your options."

Faulty wiring causes fire in home where 2 found dead

    - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) Authorities say faulty electrical wiring caused a fire in a Memphis home where the bodies of a woman and her 2-year-old daughter were found in a bedroom.

Memphis Fire Department Lt. Wayne Cooke said firefighters discovered the bodies of 20-year-old McKala Kelley and Elizabeth Kelley in a one-story, wood-frame house severely damaged by fire on Wednesday.

A medical examiner will determine the cause of their deaths.

Cooke says a 19-year-old man suffered second-degree burns to his hands and face. He was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

A fourth person escaped unharmed. Three dogs also died in the fire.

Investigators found the home did not have a working smoke detector. Officials said the accidental fire was caused by faulty electrical wiring in the attic.

    Helping hands after tragedy strikes

    - January 15, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

A Breckenridge, Minnesota, couple who lost their home to a fire Dec. 30, 2014 are now the recipients of overwhelming community support.

Jim and Marie Clement were out of town on the day of the fire. Thankfully, there were no injuries but unfortunately, along with their home and possessions, the couple lost their beloved cat and dog to smoke inhalation. The fire marshal determined the cause of fire was not the wood burner or chimney, but degraded wiring in the attic of their 1950s-era home.

It was a really good, solid house, Jim Clement said. They were able to save our big detached two-stall insulated garage, which had my restored Chevy, a BMW motorcycle and (Honda) Gullwing motorcycle inside.

Colleen Bruns lives near the Clements home. Her granddaughter, fifth grader Morgan Bruns, took it upon herself to help out the couple.

My granddaughters were here with me that day of the fire. Morgan looked at me and said, Grandma, I want to do something, I want to get some money for Jim and Marie, Colleen Bruns recalled. She knows Jim from when he rides by on his bike with his dog, she knew he was the shoe guy.

Clement owns Jims Shoe Repair in Breckenridge.

She went around her neighborhood and ours and collected money for Jim and Marie, Bruns continued. We then took the donation down to the shop.

Morgans sister, Caytlin, also donated to the cause, giving the couple money from her piggy bank.

We are so proud of Morgan to think of that, Bruns said. She was real upset about the fire.

Morgan Bruns said she thought it would be a good thing to do for the couple who lost their home.

Expert discusses best locations for home security cameras

Living room, side doors, among best places to put them

Posted YESTERDAY, 9:04 PM Updated TODAY, 3:56 AM

SAN ANTONIO - Home surveillance systems have increased in popularity, with more homeowners installing them to monitor activity, and catch crooks in the act.

Tim Krebs, spokesman for security company Protect America, said 2014 saw three-times more home cameras installations than 2013.

I think it's because they're more accessible, they're easier to use, they're less expensive now than they've ever been, Krebs said. And they've also caught up to the modern lifestyle.

Krebs also said, where a camera is placed can also be crucial to a homes security. He recommends placing a camera in a central location within the home, such as a living room.

If someone were to come in most likely they would have to come through this area to get to the kitchen, to get to another bedroom, to get to anywhere in the home, Krebs said. So we've placed this security camera right here, so if they were to come into the home, most likely they'd have to cross the path of this camera.

And while the front door is a common spot for intruders to enter, Krebs said the back or side doors are equally important.

It's very difficult to predict where they'll come, but yes, it's very common for someone to come through a side window, Krebs said. This is the prime place for a burglar to have some privacy and really go to work on your window."
