The following article is sponsored by Scott Hale Heating & Plumbing.
Now that winters here, its time for a pop quiz: You wake up in the morning and the glass of water you that left by your bedside has turned to a solid block of ice. What do you do?
If you had trouble with that one, its time for a quick lesson on furnace troubleshooting. Here are nine easy tasks you can perform yourself, before you call in a professional such as Scott Hale Plumbing Heating & Air, to try and get your gas furnace- to start kicking out the heat again.
Thermostat Problems
The first thing to check is the battery. Most digital thermostats have a battery indicator on the display. If you see an icon in the display asking for a battery, follow the manufacturers instructions and replace the battery with an appropriate size.
If you see no display at all, check the power to the furnace. This particular thermostat has a sealed battery in it, and its not replaceable.
If youve checked the battery, youve checked the power supply, and your thermostat is still not operating properly, its likely that youre just going to have to replace your thermostat. Its important to understand how your thermostat operates when its normal, when everything is right. If youre familiar with the proper operation of your equipment, then its going to make it easier. If you notice something acting unusual, call Scott Hale Plumbing Heating & Air for a proper diagnosis.
Mismatching Furnace and Thermostat
Your homes gas furnace needs to be paired with the correct thermostat to work properly; if it isnt, you could run into problems.
Thermostats have to be matched to the system based on the type of furnace thats used and the capacity and capability of that furnace. The best way to make sure youre going to have a thermostat that matches your system is to get it from an HVAC professional.

Repairing slip near Broad Bay that has inconvenienced motorists since 2013 is about to start, and work on widening Portobello Rd and renewing the sea wall close to Otakou is under way.
The $1.51 million project to build a retaining wall at Turnbulls Bay, by Broad Bay, would begin ''almost immediately'', Dunedin City Council roading projects engineer Michael Harrison said.
The wall was required after the road was undermined during a storm in mid-2013 and the damage has caused traffic delays ever since.
Mr Harrison said yesterday set-up work had been done, plans were in place, and materials ordered so the contractor could begin work.
The first job was to relocate a telecommunication cable. After that, the project would involve building a reinforced earth retaining structure, with concrete blocks on its face.
It would be built to allow for future road-widening and cycleway work.
The project, depending on weather, was expected to be completed by May.
At Otakou, another stage of the Portobello Rd-Harington Point Rd safety improvements began last month.
That work would involve renewing the sea wall, widening the road and building a walking and cycle lane.
The work near the settlement was expected to finish in April.

The confusion over days of operation of Malindo Airs direct flight between Vizag and Kuala Lumpur has been cleared with the airport authorities confirming the original schedule (Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays) sought by the airline. The airline will begin operations from the city from February 15.
There were doubts over change in the days of operation and even threat of the airline pulling out as the authorities had expressed their inability to provide security on Tuesdays and Thursdays after 10 p.m. due to acute shortage of CISF personnel.
On the plea made by Airport Advisory Board member O. Naresh Kumar, Visakhapatnam MP Kambhampati Haribabu took up the matter with Union Minister of Civil Aviation P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju and the problem was sorted at the highest level.
Temporary manpower has been sanctioned for the two additional days on which the airport would now have to be kept open after 10 p.m., Airport Director C. Pattabhi said confirming the developments on Monday.
The issue has once again brought to the fore the acute shortage of manpower at the Visakhapatnam International Airport. At a time when Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has been giving a red carpet to entrepreneurs from Singapore, Malaysia and other countries to invest in India, incidents of this nature will reflect badly on the functioning of the government, feels Mr. Naresh Kumar.

The Railways had conceded the long-pending demand for a halt for Garibrath at Duvvada after several struggles. The halt, to be implemented on an experimental basis from January 14, was announced on December 31, 2014.
Ironically, several emails and SMSs had to be sent to the railway authorities to get the halt included in the e-ticket reservation facility, says Duvvada Railway Users Association secretary K. Eswar. The e-ticket reservation facility was extended only on January 12, just two days ahead of the inaugural halt.
