Most of the Livermore School of Dance's performers weren't yet born when "The Lion King" debuted in 1994 (which effectively makes me feel ancient), but that won't stop the young cast from giving their all to an upcoming winter performance at the Bankhead Theater based on the popular story.
Director Liz Roberts, who co-owns the dance studio at 1988 Second Street with Shelly Schoendienst, said the jazz company's ninth annual winter performance -- scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 6-7 -- is different from past offerings.
"We've always loved 'The Lion King,' and we just thought it would be something fun," Roberts explained of the group's decision to create a dance performance based on the story. The performance, however, will be unconventional. The group recognizes they are not actors by trade, so the show will feature strictly dancing.
"We're abstracting it so it'll work for a dance show ... we have a whole bunch of fun little things were adding to it to make it exciting," she said.
One of those additions is new music. While the crowd can look forward to old favorites like "Circle of Life" and a spirited rendition of "Hakuna Matata" performed by the studio's younger company dancers, they plan to shake it up with a few unconventional numbers. Perhaps the most exciting will be "Welcome to the Jungle," a high-energy jazz routine featuring fancy tricks.
The music isn't the only update. Roberts and her crew are experimenting with light tricks and new techy techniques to bring new life to the show. She's keeping the efforts a secret for now since nothing has been finalized, but whatever it is promises to enhance the show's visual beauty.
The Le Tableau Magnifique Ballet Company students from Livermore School of Dance will join the ensemble show as well, performing three ballet numbers including a pointe routine to open the second act. With the addition of the second School of Dance company, the show promises variety -- with everything from tap to hip-hop, modern to lyrical.
Jaren Dietsch, 13, who describes the studio as a sort of second home, has taken classes at School of Dance since he was 8. During that time he has participated in many of the group's performances (they don't compete, so they focus on performing year-round), but he sees potential for "The Lion King"-based event to go above and beyond.
"I think this show is going to be more extravagant and flashy than shows in the past because we have lots of new and interesting things planned," he said. "It is an amazing feeling to bring a story that started as nothing to life on a stage completely polished." Fellow student Shastina Wilson, 17, echoed Dietsch's sentiments.
"I think this show is definitely going to be one to remember," she said of their upcoming performance.

BELLOWS FALLS >> The Rockingham Selectboard voted unanimously Tuesday to grant a request for $3,000 from the Rockingham Revolving Loan Fund for window replacement at a local tatoo parlour.
All five Selectboard members approved the loan, which Mountainside Tattoo owner Alex Lawrence will use to replace windows at this shop at 55 The Square, according to Rockingham Finance Director Francis "Dutch" Walsh. A memo from Walsh states the town design review board has given approval for the window replacement and the Revolving Loan Fund Committee recommended the loan.
The loan term will span 24 months at 10 percent interest. According to Walsh, Lawrence's monthly payments will be $138.43.
During Tuesday's public comment portion, Bellows Falls resident Marie Perrault stood up to express her concern over two Holstein cows on School Street that are left exposed to the harsh winter elements. She said this is unfair to the bovines.
"The animals are suffering out in the cold. I think something should be done about it," she told the Selectboard.
Stearns and various Selectboard members told Perrault her concerns were warranted and they would look into the matter. Selectboard member Ann DiBernardo said she wanted to see something done by Wednesday. When contacted by the Reformer, Bellows Falls Police Chief Ron Lake said there is no criminal investigation or animal abuse case being conducted and the cows appear to be in good health.
Later in the meeting, the Selectboard approved a budget for FY2016. Members approved an expense budget of $5,012,175, with $4,241,140. Stearns did not have a specific percentage increase for the press as of Tuesday night.

An elderly grandmother died of pneumonia after yobs hurled a breeze block through her window leaving her exposed to freezing temperatures on the coldest night of the year.
June Green, 83, who had been the victim of three previous burglaries, stayed in her bedroom when she heard the noise and spent the next 12 hours huddled under blankets not daring to investigate.
Raiders waited until she was asleep before entering the bungalow where she lived alone to steal a handbag containing a purse with around 60 cash from the bedroom.

SARANAC LAKE - Interior construction and renovation work on the Hotel Saranac, starting with replacement of all 169 of its guest room windows, is expected to begin by the end of this month.
That's what Fred Roedel III of New Hampshire-based Roedel Companies said Wednesday night. Roedel was the guest speaker at a meeting of the Saranac Lake Women's College Scholarship Club. Roughly 50 people braved the double-digit-subzero temperatures outside to attend the meeting, held in the Saranac Lake Free Library's Cantwell Community Room.
Last month, Roedel told the Enterprise the project was behind schedule, but he said he still hoped to reopen the iconic Main Street hotel this spring.

Asked by an audience member Wednesday night what the expected opening date for the hotel would be, Roedel said it will be closer to mid summer.
"We're honing in on that," he said. "Construction is going to begin in earnest by the end of this month. We're writing contracts now for our plumbing, electric, heating and air conditioning. As we hone in on that more and more, we're probably looking at July and August, somewhere in there."
That may seem like a quick turnaround, but Roedel said his company can put up a brand-new hotel in nine months.
"The great thing here is the structure is here," he said. "We're not moving any walls. When we begin work, they'll literally begin laying the electric, the plumbing and the mechanical right where it's going to go. So we think in a period of three to four months we'll be putting up paint, putting down carpet and getting ready for this thing."
The double-hung vinyl windows on the third, fourth, fifth and sixth floors will be replaced starting in two weeks, Roedel said. Special small tents will be extended outside the windows so workers can replace them from inside the hotel.
"They're all new windows," he said. "I'm looking forward to that day. I drove up here today from New Hampshire and fixed four windows where the window just fell out of the frame and the cold air was blowing through it."

Signaling the growing importance of solar energy to Americas future, the widely read and cited annual State of American Energy Report released today by the American Petroleum Institute (API) includes, for the first time ever, a comprehensive section on the rapid growth of the U.S. solar energy industry and its impact on our nations economy and environment.
According to the report, which included an assist from the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA), solar is now the fastest-growing source of renewable energy in America. Today, the U.S. has an estimated 20.2 GW of installed solar capacity, enough to effectively power nearly 4 million homes in the United States or every single home in a state the size of Massachusetts or New Jersey with another 20 GW in the pipeline for 2015-16.
The report went on to say, Solar energy is now more affordable than ever. According to SEIA/GTM Research, national blended average system prices have dropped 53 percent since 2010. Today, the solar industry employs 143,000 Americans and pumps more than $15 billion a year into the U.S. economy. This remarkable growth is due, in large part, to smart and effective public policies, such as the Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC), Net Energy Metering (NEM) and Renewable Energy Standards (RES).
The impact of solar energy on the environment has been equally impressive. Solar helped to offset an estimated 20 million metric tons of harmful CO2 emissions in 2014, which is the equivalent of taking four million cars off U.S. highways, saving 2.1 billion gallons of gasoline or shuttering five coal-fired power plants, the report stated. When looking at Americas energy future, solar can be a real game changer, providing more and more homes, businesses, schools and government entities across the United States with clean, reliable and affordable electricity, while also helping states to meet proposed new obligations under Section 111(d) of the Clean Air Act.
Most importantly, the report predicted strong, continued growth in all sectors of the U.S. solar industry residential, commercial, utility-scale and solar heating and cooling over the next two years.
The United States is in the midst of a new era in domestic energy abundance characterized by rising use of renewable energy and increased oil and natural gas production that is strengthening our economic outlook and enabling America to emerge as a global energy superpower, said API President and CEO Jack Gerard. Its a remarkable transformation that has been made possible because America is uniquely rich in energy resources, a talented workforce and cutting-edge energy technologies."
Solar energy is one of Americas great success stories, said SEIA President and CEO Rhone Resch. Last year, solar installations were 70 times higher than they were in 2006 and today theres nearly 30 times more solar capacity online nationwide. Weve gone from being an $800 million industry in 2006 to a $15 billion industry today. The price to install a solar rooftop system has been cut in half, while utility systems have dropped by 70 percent. It took the U.S. solar industry 40 years to install the first 20 GW of solar. Now, were going to install the next 20 GW in the next two years. In fact, during every single week of 2015, were going to install more capacity than what we did during the entire year in 2006. Any way you look at it, solar energy is paying huge dividends for the economy, our environment and Americas future.
