SAN JOSE, Calif. Someday the smart home may be the norm, but today it still a somewhat pricey set of proprietary products, slowly opening up to work with industry standards.
That's the view I took away from an interview with Matthew Swatsky, a computer engineer turned product manager for Lutron's smart home products. The company has been wiring homes since the 1980s. In the 1990s, it rolled out Clear Connect, its own wireless technology now in its fifth generation.
"We're in the early stages of the connected home," said Swatsky, who is attending CES 2015 this week. "In the early 90s, custom cabinets were an upgrade. Now they are standard. The connected home may follow that trend."
Before we get there, AV and security products need to work better with the kind of lighting, motorized shades and HVAC controls Lutron makes, and everybody has to interoperate with everyone else.
Lutron has been taking its own small steps in that direction. Its proprietary 433MHz wireless systems now work with a WiFi thermostat from Honeywell, and Lutron recently agreed to support the Google Nest thermostat.

The company already ships Android and iOS apps for its network that goes under the Caseta Wireless brand. Apple demoed its app running on the Apple Watch when it was announced last year. "All the technology in that watch was not available five years ago," Swatsky said. "Mobile devices make home controls more accessible."
Lutron has 15 partners in its Caseta Wireless ecosystem, including Logitech, and it is reaching out for more. This year, it will embrace ZigBee in a remote control for smart LED lights.
Today's up-and-coming networks -- Bluetooth, WiFi, ZigBee -- weren't ready to plug into the smart home when Lutron started work on its wireless technology nearly 20 years ago. But today the private company that sells to both consumer and contractors, which need to embrace the rising tide of open standards to continue to thrive.
Swatsky does not pretend that his FM band network made with off-the-shelf radios and microcontrollers is at the bleeding edge. Its 62.5 Kbit/s links are meant to extend only 30 feet in a typical home. The key is that they are reliable and support nodes with battery life measured in years.

Joining Honeywell's Lyric line is a home security suite of sensors that play nice with other home automation tools.
Honeywell doesn't want to be left behind. It's been making iconic thermostats and other household tools since 1885, but the dawn of the digital home means the well-known firm has to embrace modern (and connected) gadgets.
The company could have been supplanted by the Google-owned Nest Labs and its Nest Learning Thermostat. But Honeywell responded last year with a smart stat of its own, called Lyric. Like the Nest, it learns, and can be controlled by a smartphone. Now, as multiple companies join the home automation/security train, Honeywell is expanding the Lyric line to include home security.
Lyric's new products will include a wall-mounted LCD touch-screen control panel that responds to voice commands (tell it to turn off the heat and lock the house as you head to bed), plus cameras, motion detectors, smoke detectors, and intrusion detectors. Yes, Honeywell finally has a way to add voice control to the Lyric Thermostat (something that's not in the Nest, either).
What's perhaps most important: Honeywell says the Lyric products will integrate with other home automation hubs and systems, so it'll work with other devices not in the Lyric line. You won't be locked in to just buying Honeywell products, or eschewing them in favor of others.
However, Honeywell didn't mention who those other hubs and systems might be, or even if they Lyric sensors will use an existed technology for communication, like ZigBee, Bluetooth, or Wi-Fibut it will reportedly be compatible with Apple HomeKit, a framework for developers who want devices to talk to iOS.
Pricing and availability were also not announced.

According to Honeywell, you'll soon be able to utter phrases like that to control all sorts of home security and automation products.
The previously thermostat-centric brand has just announced at CES 2015 that it's adding cameras, motion sensors, smoke detectors and more to its existing Lyric lineup -- all controllable via a physical touchscreen display, customized voice controls and the Lyric app, available for both Android and iOS users.
Honeywell's Lyric Home Security System is also supposed to work with thermostats, lights, locks and window shades so you can automate your entire house from a central hub. That means that you should be able to turn on your lights, adjust your thermostat and disarm your security system with a single command.

The Honeywell $279 Lyric Thermostat, unveiled in 2014, relies on geofencing to keep track of your whereabouts. When it senses that you're nearing home, it's designed to switch automatically from Away mode to Home mode, and again from Home mode back to Away mode the next time you leave.
The Lyric thermostat didn't originally have voice control functionality -- unlike the company's Wi-Fi Smart Thermostat with Voice Control -- but it sounds like that's all about to change with this upcoming security system integration.
Honeywell hasn't shared specifics regarding pricing, availability or integrations with third-party manufacturers just yet. Keep an eye our for updates on that front. In the meantime, check out the rest of our CES 2015 coverage.

Syracuse, NY -- The last Onondaga County jury to hear murder evidence against Lynnquan Kellam ended deadlocked after three days, 11 to 1.
This week, a second jury begins to hear the case against Kellam, 28, who is accused of shooting Arthur Bullock, 54, to death May 31, 2013 on Bullock's front porch at 142 Fage Ave. Bullock was shot in the head during a robbery and died at Upstate University Hospital.
Kellam, who was on the porch, says he was not the shooter, but another victim of the actual robber. But prosecutor Melinda McGunnigle counter that an eyewitness saw Kellam pull the trigger and that others corroborated the witness's story.
The last jury remained deadlocked, 6-6, on the second day of deliberations in August. That changed to 11-1 by the end of the day.
But the panel could never reach a unanimous verdict. County Court Judge Joseph Fahey excused them on the third day.
Defense lawyer Don Kelly argued during the first trial that the witnesses colluded against Kellam to protect the true shooter's identity.
That jury was left with little physical evidence pointing to Kellam as the gunman. Forensic tests did not link him to the crime.
Syracuse police described Bullock as a handyman who came onto the porch to defend his friends. But evidence showed that a crowd had come to Bullock's house that night to buy drugs. He stumbled upon the robbery while leaving his house, Kelly has said.
Testimony in the retrial continues today.
