The Sentinel commented Revealed: The worst rat 'hot spot' areas of Stoke-on-Trent

    - January 6, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Comments(9)

EXTERMINATORS were called to deal with rats in one Stoke-on-Trent street nearly 30 times in just 18 months.

Thorndyke Street in Shelton has been revealed as the biggest rat hot spot in the Potteries, according to figures released by Stoke-on-Trent City Council.

The authority was called to deal with 2,965 problems across the city with most streets needing one or two visits.

However, 27 pest control requests relating to rats in the Shelton street were received between May 2013 and October 2014.

Gail Oliver, aged 44, of Thorndyke Street, said: It really is pretty bad around here, Ive seen quite a few running around and even some dead ones.

The figures come as pest controllers warn residents to be on their guard against rodents.

Rob Simpson, managing director of pest control experts Basis Prompt, says the animals will root for food in bins.

He said: The period around Christmas and New Year provides rats with the perfect opportunity to appear, particularly as it was party time with fewer bin collections.

Pest control officers believe a collapsed drain could be to blame for turning the street into the biggest rat hotspot in the city.

High Bay LED Flood light Fixture offers metal halide alternative.

    - January 6, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Kemp, Texas 75143 Longtime leader in commercial and industrial grade lighting equipment Larson Electronics continues its commitment to providing high grade lighting equipment to specialty markets with the release of a high intensity 400 watt LED light fixture that is a direct replacement for 1,000 watt metal halide fixtures.

The GAU-HB-400W-LED-SS fixture from Larson Electronics produces 52,000 lumens of high intensity light while drawing 400 watts from a 120 volt electrical system. This high mast LED flood light offers intense light output and is ideal for flood lighting, crane lighting, light towers, as well as industrial and outdoor lighting applications. This 400 watt high intensity LED light fixture is an ideal replacement for fragile and hot running 1,000 watt metal halide lamps. They offer low power requirements, high durability and a versatile mounting system that makes these LED light emitters a superior lighting solution for demanding applications where power and reliability is critical. Fifty-four Bridgelux high output LEDs producing 963 lumens each are arranged in rows and paired with PMMA high purity optics to produce a well-focused 25 wide spot beam that is ideal for providing far reaching concentrated illumination while still covering a substantial amount of area.

Each unit is equipped with a back mount trunnion style bracket constructed of 304 stainless steel that allows the light to be attached to flat surfaces and adjusted through 160 of vertical movement. To adjust the unit after mounting, the user simply loosens the set screws located on either side of the unit, moves it into the desired position, then re-tightens the screws. The base of the mounting trunnion is equipped with several machined slots which allow users to utilize existing mounting holes and slide the unit for precise mount positioning. The heavy duty design and high power of these LED lights make them suitable for a wide array of applications including high mast lighting, light towers, light plant LED retrofits, military, mining, industrial manufacturing, machine visioning, security and law enforcement, commercial structure illumination, sport complexes, billboards, race tracks, and parking lots.

Our new 400 watt LED light fixture is perfect for retrofitting light towers from metal halide fixtures to LED, said Rob Bresnahan with Larsonelectronics.com. This unit is designed to withstand extreme environments and operating conditions and can withstand rapid temperature changes.

Larson Electronics produces a wide range of intrinsically safe LED lights, explosion proof LED work lights, portable LED lights, explosion proof flashlights and LED trouble lights. The entire Larson Electronics line of explosion proof lighting can be viewed by visiting Larsonelectronics.com. Loudoun course addresses the growing concerns about eco-friendly gardening

    - January 6, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

    January 5 at 11:26 AM

Gardening is much more than growing plump tomatoes or fragrant roses. Gardens are part of the chain of life, with environmental consequences that can be beneficial or detrimental, depending on the choices a gardener makes.

That is the central theme of Landscape for Life, a five-week course that 15 people will begin taking Tuesday through the Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy. The course focuses on the concept of sustainable gardening and examines the effects of gardening on pollinators, wildlife, the immediate environment and the watershed.

Sustainability, in the Landscape for Life framework, essentially is to meet our current needs without decreasing the ability of future generations to meet their needs, said Nan McCarry of Lucketts, the lead teacher of the course. Sustainable gardening is just one small way that a person can have a positive impact on the local and wider ecosystems through their ... yard or garden.

The Landscape for Life curriculum, which was developed by the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center and the U.S. Botanic Garden, uses a train the trainer model to adapt the course to the local community, McCarry said.

The course is divided into three main subject areas: soil, water and plants. The unit on soils covers topics such as erosion and soil compaction, which is a problem in neighborhoods that have been recently developed, she said.

The need to conserve drinking water is an area of particular concern for McCarry.

We are seeing really frightening droughts in other parts of the country, she said. Right now, we are lucky to be experiencing some wet years, but water is going to become a more limited resource everywhere as we have more people.

Landscape for Life advocates smaller lawns that require less water and fertilizer to maintain, as well as the use of rain barrels to retain water in the yard. Collecting water in a rain barrel conserves water that otherwise would flow down the driveway or through the yard, McCarry said. The collected water can then be used in the garden.

The class also teaches how to create rain gardens by growing deeply rooted native plants, such as white oak, coral honeysuckle or bee balm, among other varieties, to trap water that would otherwise run off the property, McCarry said.

Heres a group getting it together in the murky world of healthcare collaboration

    - January 6, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The landscape for how to turn life science and health care technologies into viable companies has changed more in the last 3 years than in the last 30. New approaches to translational medicine have emerged. Our Lean Launchpad for Life Sciences is one of them. But a new class of life science/healthcare co-working and collaboration space is another.

The National Institutes of Health recognizes that Life Science/Health Care commercialization has two components: the science/technology, and the business model.TheLean Launchpad for Life Sciences (the I-Corps @ NIH) uses theLean Startup Model to discover and validate the business model.

The classprovides Life Science/Health Care entrepreneurs with real world, hands-on learning on how to rapidly:

This user/customer-centered approach is a huge step in the right direction in the life science/health care commercialization. However, one of the bottlenecks in actually doing Customer Discovery for medical devices/health care is testing how minimal viable products work in-context. Testing hypotheses with doctors, patients, payers, providers, purchasing departments, strategic partners is hard. It can involve traveling hundreds of miles and can consume months of time and loads of money. Scheduling time to look over a surgeons shoulder in an operating room is tough. Getting time to brainstorm with payers or experts in clinical trials is hard.

It would be great if there were a way to first test these hypotheses and minimal viable products in a realistic setting locally. Then after a first pass of validation, take them on the road and see if others agree.

A new life science/healthcare co-working and collaboration spaceIt looks like someone is actually pulling this together in a life science/healthcare co-working and collaboration space in Chicago called MATTER.

Co-working spaces seem to be evolving into the startup garages of the future. Its a shared work environment (typically a floor of a building) where individuals (or small teams) rent space and work around other people but independently. Yet they share values and hopefully some synergy around topics of mutual interest (same customers, or technologies). Incubators are designed for teams with an idea. They add mentors and additional services and some offer free space in exchange for equity. Accelerators take teams with fairly focused ideas and offer a formal 3-4 month program of tutoring/mentoring with seed funding in exchange for equity.

The MATTERco-working space will havefive unique things specifically for life science/healthcare companies:

By building a co-working space that includes all of these stakeholders, MATTERallows startups (and companies) to get in front of customers and other members of the value chain first, before they leave the building.

Mandarin residents see I-295 edge closer to homes; bypassed by benefit of new lanes

    - January 6, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Mandarin residents are just starting to see the massive changes in the landscape along their part of Interstate 295.

Thousands of trees have been torn down to make way for a SunPass toll lane or express lane between the Buckman Bridge and the I-95 interchange.

Unfortunately, Mandarin residents wont be able to use it.

Im really ambivalent about the express lane because I wont be able to use it anyway, said Leah Tincher, whose home in the Sweetwater neighborhood on Greenland Road now sits in view of the interstate.

Though many homes along the interstate are losing their natural barrier, along with the does, bucks and yearlings that could often be seen at night nibbling on the grass along the woodline southwest of the interchange, there will be no entrance points to the toll lanes anywhere in between leaving Mandarin residents in the three traditional lanes of traffic.

Im just glad theyre finally putting in a sound barrier, Tincher said.

After the last round of widening on that section of I-295, Tincher was mortified. When I bought this house, you couldnt hear the interstate and you couldnt see the interstate, she said. Now I can wave to people from my pool.

Bike Week is especially bad, she said.

You cant talk on the phone or hear the television, she said.

The interstate now is coming even closer.

Lawrenceville interior designer gets some fresh recognition from HGTV

    - January 6, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Her work transforming an awkward, cramped kitchen into an inviting space ideal for entertaining has earned a Pittsburgh newcomer national attention.

Interior designer Lauren Levant Bland, 32, of Lawrenceville won for Most Dramatic Transformation in HGTV's Fresh Faces of Design competition identifying the Top 10 American designers under age 35.

I was really thrilled says Levant Bland, owner of Lauren Levant Interior. I always like it when I know the design I've done pleases the client, and to think it's also been intriguing for other people to see is a wonderful honor.

In their search for the newest crop of up-and-coming talent, HGTV invited designers from all over the country to submit their work. A panel of industry leaders then selected finalists for awards in 10 categories, and the public voted to select the winners.

Levant Bland's work turning the bright-yellow, country-style kitchen into a warm, more natural space for a client in Washington, D.C., will be featured across the HGTV family of websites, mobile apps and in HGTV Magazine. The opportunity to reach so many people with her work is exciting for the young designer.

There are probably at least a few projects that I will never know of or see that have been inspired in some way by that, she says. When people save it to their idea books and talk about it, your design keeps going, and that's really cool.

The original space was disjointed and cramped, with an off-center window and an oddly peaked roof. Levant Bland brought in wood beams to help unify the ceiling and bring in more consistent lighting. She created a more cohesive workspace with a peninsula and prep sink piece, upgraded equipment and a more neutral color scheme.

Homeowner Helen Beckner says, because her family loves to cook, they put a great deal of thought into what their dream kitchen would include. Levant Bland helped make that vision a reality, she says.

Because the space has some quirks to it, we knew that we needed someone with creativity and vision to design a kitchen that was functional as well as beautiful, she says. Before hiring Lauren, I met with seven other kitchen designers. Lauren was the only one to come up with a solution to our issues on the spot in our first meeting before I even hired her.

Lauren has a keen eye and a unique ability to visualize a space when she enters it. She knew the minute she walked into my original kitchen that the space needed beams to unify it.

Sharing Economy: Airbnb Programmers Want to Build a 'Digital Interior Designer'

    - January 6, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Airbnb is very invested in its listings looking nice. Since 2008, the company has offered free professional photography to rooms that meet a certain level of tastefulness, because good-looking, professionally photographed interiors are rented more often, which means more service fees for Airbnb. Now, Bloomberg reports that Airbnb is taking that idea a step further, using "the same magic that Google has"machine learning with big sets of user datato not only pair users with rooms they might like, but to find and push the most "attractive" listings. One day, they might even have a "digital interior designer" to help you spruce up that guest room.

    Via Bloomberg:

Eventually, Airbnb may offer a digital interior designer that predicts ways to enhance listings and spruce up homes to increase bookings. "Maybe you should improve your images; maybe you should provide these amenities that are popular," Charkov says. "We want to bring the insights back to the host."

Any day now, future Nate Berkus will arrive in the present, sent back through time by the human resistance to prevent this machine-driven homogenization of taste.
