Cape Breton veteran reacts to cabinet shuffle

SYDNEY Cape Breton veterans advocate Ron Clarke said he isn't optimistic anything will change as a result of Monday's cabinet shuffle.

"We didn't lose anything by having him (Fantino) fired, and we didn't gain anything either by them putting in (Erin) O'Toole. I can't put all the blame on (Fantino) because Mr. Harper runs the show and they'll do what Mr. Harper tells them to do," he said in a phone interview with the Cape Breton Post on Monday afternoon.

Clarke, who was named newsmaker of the year by the Cape Breton Post last week, has become a household name when it comes to cuts to Veterans Affairs. He led his charge to the nation's capital where he met with parliamentarians, senators and other officials to protest cuts made under Fantino's leadership. He has asked for the reopening of eight Veterans Affairs offices that were closed last year, including the one in Sydney.

"It's not a democracy, especially when Harper says 'Jump' and they say 'How high?'" Clarke said.

Clarke said he doesn't have high expectations for Fantino's replacement, O'Toole.

    Hotel hearing Tuesday

    - January 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

The three-story L-shaped hotel designed for Steve Zemo by architect Scott Yates of H&R Design would overlook a walled garden. The five-acre site off Old Quarry Road is expected to hold three other commercial buildings, including a multi-use office building, a storage facility and a large event space. The project will have a public hearing Tuesday, Jan. 6.

Hotel rooms that resemble apartment units, increased traffic on some of the towns busiest intersections, and runoff that would negatively affect the Great Swamp these are all concerns facing the Planning and Zoning Commission as it prepares to host a public hearing for the proposed Old Quarry Commons, a mixed-use project that includes a 48-suite hotel on the five-acre site off Old Quarry Road.

The project, which was submitted to the commission by local developer Steve Zemo, is expected to be completed and occupied by the end of 2016, if approved, according to the proposed plans.

In addition to the hotel, the proposal includes three other commercial buildings a storage facility, an event space and a mixed-use office building that would have 11 residential apartments on the second floor that would be located on the northern side of Old Quarry Road across from the old Schlumberger site.

Members of the the public have already raised concern with the designs specifically at the hotel, which would have 27 of its 48 units equipped with two bedrooms and two bathrooms as well as other additions, like a washer and dryer and a kitchen area.

I am very concerned that this is more reflective of an apartment building than a hotel, said local developer Patrick Downend in a letter to Town Planner Betty Brosisus on Dec. 10.

Individual units have laundry equipment, he said. I would challenge the applicant to produce a list of other Connecticut hotels that have in-unit laundry.

The kitchen areas designated on the plans are quite large for a hotel room, he said. The average hotel room size is approximately 850 square feet. Keep in mind the average hotel room size in the United States is between 300 and 400 square feet.

There are 27 two-bedroom, two bath units. That is very unusual for a hotel this size.

Mr. Downend also had an issue with the proposed hotels length of stays.

91-year-old honors wife, son with memorial window

    - January 5, 2015 by Mr HomeBuilder

Greg Ritter, a 91-year-old retired Baltimore Gas and Electric employee, crafted a stained glass window at St. Paul's Independent Church in Millers, Maryland, to honor his late wife and son. (Submitted)

Greg Ritter poses with family members in front of the window he made to honor his late wife and son. From left: Greg Ritter's granddaughters Emily and Katie Ritter, and daughter-in-law Anita Ritter, of Hanover; Greg Ritter, of Hanover; daughter Cathy Papathakis, of Ellicott City, Maryland; son Paul Ritter, of Spring Grove; and son Mike Ritter, of Millers, Maryland. (Submitted)

Walking through the front door of St. Paul's Independent Church in Millers, Maryland, you might catch a rainbow of vibrant light shining through a stained glass window.

The window isn't large, just 4 feet long and 1 foot tall, and the design of bright squares surrounding three crosses is fairly simple.

The story behind the window, though, speaks to one man's efforts to honor the memory of his son and wife.

Greg Ritter, a 91-year-old retired Baltimore Gas and Electric employee, moved to Hanover's Homewood retirement community with his wife, Josie, in 2005. Jeff, one of their four children, lived nearby with his wife and daughters.

When Josie died in August 2013, followed by Jeff in October, Ritter grew determined to honor their legacies. He got that chance in May, when his son, Mike, mentioned that the church in which he serves as an elder planned to replace the window above its front door.

Using skills he learned at classes at Homewood, Ritter carefully crafted a design for a replacement window over the course of three months a large cross flanked by two smaller ones.

Religion has always played a large role in the family's life, even though Ritter said he no longer attends church regularly.

"I'm a graduate. I'm too old to get in trouble," he said with a laugh.

    The Senate building

A new Senate building causes stir in the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, as its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Femi Mimiko, bows out, TEMITAYO FAMUTIMI reports

For the outgoing Vice-Chancellor of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Prof. Femi Mimiko, his five-year stay at the university has gracefully ended.

The professor of Comparative Political Economy performed his last official duty in office with the inauguration of the institutions Senate building by Governor Olusegun Mimiko, last Friday.

The governor is the Visitor to the university.

For 14 years, the university had carried on with its activities without a Senate building, as members of staff, especially the non-academic ones, huddled up in small buildings scattered around the campus community.

When the construction of the Senate building began on March 7, 2012 by the contractor, Charvet Nigeria Limited, students, teaching and non-teaching staff heaved a loud sigh of relief.

The five-storey Senate building, described by the VC as an iconic product of research, creativity and deep thinking, sits on 12 hectares of land and provides for about 16,000 square metres office space.

The central administration building, which houses the VCs office, Registry, Bursary, a 184-seater Senate Chamber, 50-seater Council Chamber, two 50-seater conference rooms, 10 boardrooms, with 148 offices, among others, is said to have been constructed at an estimated cost of N1bn by the Ondo State Government.
