The three-story L-shaped hotel designed for Steve Zemo by architect Scott Yates of H&R Design would overlook a walled garden. The five-acre site off Old Quarry Road is expected to hold three other commercial buildings, including a multi-use office building, a storage facility and a large event space. The project will have a public hearing Tuesday, Jan. 6.
Hotel rooms that resemble apartment units, increased traffic on some of the towns busiest intersections, and runoff that would negatively affect the Great Swamp these are all concerns facing the Planning and Zoning Commission as it prepares to host a public hearing for the proposed Old Quarry Commons, a mixed-use project that includes a 48-suite hotel on the five-acre site off Old Quarry Road.
The project, which was submitted to the commission by local developer Steve Zemo, is expected to be completed and occupied by the end of 2016, if approved, according to the proposed plans.
In addition to the hotel, the proposal includes three other commercial buildings a storage facility, an event space and a mixed-use office building that would have 11 residential apartments on the second floor that would be located on the northern side of Old Quarry Road across from the old Schlumberger site.
Members of the the public have already raised concern with the designs specifically at the hotel, which would have 27 of its 48 units equipped with two bedrooms and two bathrooms as well as other additions, like a washer and dryer and a kitchen area.
I am very concerned that this is more reflective of an apartment building than a hotel, said local developer Patrick Downend in a letter to Town Planner Betty Brosisus on Dec. 10.
Individual units have laundry equipment, he said. I would challenge the applicant to produce a list of other Connecticut hotels that have in-unit laundry.
The kitchen areas designated on the plans are quite large for a hotel room, he said. The average hotel room size is approximately 850 square feet. Keep in mind the average hotel room size in the United States is between 300 and 400 square feet.
There are 27 two-bedroom, two bath units. That is very unusual for a hotel this size.
Mr. Downend also had an issue with the proposed hotels length of stays.

Greg Ritter, a 91-year-old retired Baltimore Gas and Electric employee, crafted a stained glass window at St. Paul's Independent Church in Millers, Maryland, to honor his late wife and son. (Submitted)
Greg Ritter poses with family members in front of the window he made to honor his late wife and son. From left: Greg Ritter's granddaughters Emily and Katie Ritter, and daughter-in-law Anita Ritter, of Hanover; Greg Ritter, of Hanover; daughter Cathy Papathakis, of Ellicott City, Maryland; son Paul Ritter, of Spring Grove; and son Mike Ritter, of Millers, Maryland. (Submitted)
Walking through the front door of St. Paul's Independent Church in Millers, Maryland, you might catch a rainbow of vibrant light shining through a stained glass window.
The window isn't large, just 4 feet long and 1 foot tall, and the design of bright squares surrounding three crosses is fairly simple.
The story behind the window, though, speaks to one man's efforts to honor the memory of his son and wife.
Greg Ritter, a 91-year-old retired Baltimore Gas and Electric employee, moved to Hanover's Homewood retirement community with his wife, Josie, in 2005. Jeff, one of their four children, lived nearby with his wife and daughters.
When Josie died in August 2013, followed by Jeff in October, Ritter grew determined to honor their legacies. He got that chance in May, when his son, Mike, mentioned that the church in which he serves as an elder planned to replace the window above its front door.
Using skills he learned at classes at Homewood, Ritter carefully crafted a design for a replacement window over the course of three months a large cross flanked by two smaller ones.
Religion has always played a large role in the family's life, even though Ritter said he no longer attends church regularly.
"I'm a graduate. I'm too old to get in trouble," he said with a laugh.

The Senate building
A new Senate building causes stir in the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, as its Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Femi Mimiko, bows out, TEMITAYO FAMUTIMI reports
For the outgoing Vice-Chancellor of the Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Prof. Femi Mimiko, his five-year stay at the university has gracefully ended.
The professor of Comparative Political Economy performed his last official duty in office with the inauguration of the institutions Senate building by Governor Olusegun Mimiko, last Friday.
The governor is the Visitor to the university.
For 14 years, the university had carried on with its activities without a Senate building, as members of staff, especially the non-academic ones, huddled up in small buildings scattered around the campus community.
When the construction of the Senate building began on March 7, 2012 by the contractor, Charvet Nigeria Limited, students, teaching and non-teaching staff heaved a loud sigh of relief.
The five-storey Senate building, described by the VC as an iconic product of research, creativity and deep thinking, sits on 12 hectares of land and provides for about 16,000 square metres office space.
The central administration building, which houses the VCs office, Registry, Bursary, a 184-seater Senate Chamber, 50-seater Council Chamber, two 50-seater conference rooms, 10 boardrooms, with 148 offices, among others, is said to have been constructed at an estimated cost of N1bn by the Ondo State Government.

D-Link unveils two powerline adapter kits at CES 2015, the DHP-701AV and the DHP-601AV, that could deliver connection speeds of 2,000Mbps and 1,000Mbps, respectively.

LAS VEGAS -- Powerline technology, which turns home electrical wiring into that of a computer network, has always been the fastest way to extend a wired network. And now its connection speed might rival that of a gigabit connection.
D-Link announced Monday at CES 2015 two new adapter kits, the PowerLine AV2 2000 Gigabit Starter Kit (model DHP-701AV) and PowerLine AV2 1000 Gigabit Starter Kit (DHP-601AV), which have top speeds of 2,000Mbps and 1,000Mbps, respectively.
Each of these kits includes two identical adapters, enough to create the first powerline connection, D-Link said. The DHP-701AV is equipped with the latest in HomePlug AV2 Multiple Input Multiple Output (MIMO) technology. The addition of MIMO technology allows the adapters to use the fastest two wires in a typical three-wire (live, neutral and ground) installation to achieve speeds up to 2,000Mbps.

The DHP-600AV PowerLine AV2 1000 Gigabit Adapters, on the other hand, uses only a single wire of the electric network to create a connection of up to 1,000Mbps.
Both kits come with power-saving features that reduce power consumption by up to 85 percent, and support 128-bit AES Link Encryption with key management for secure communications.
The DHP-701AV and DHP-601AV will be available in the first quarter of 2015 at the suggested retail price of $129.99 and $79.99, respectively. Check back for full reviews.

Flooded homes caused by leaking water heaters, washing machines, sink and toilet hoses and valves, frozen leaking pipes and other plumbing can be a disaster, destroying your property and precious memories.
Leaking plumbing does not give any warning and can fail without notice. Small leaks can create a flooded home if undetected, even for a couple of hours when at work or away for the night or an extended vacation.
Introducing the ValveSentry - the first and only automatic water shut off device that attaches to the water main valve - no plumbing or permits required!
The ValveSentry device bolts to any ball or gate valve and shuts off the water main when a leak is detected.
Installation of the ValveSentry device is simple and doesn't require any plumbing - installs easily in minutes with ordinary hand tools. And it fits on any type or size of water main shut off valve.
If the water main valve can be manually closed by hand, the ValveSentry device can be easily installed on it for automatic shut off.
The ValveSentry device's water sensor can be placed anywhere in the home to detect a water leak and promptly turn off the water main.
Place additional ValveSentry water sensors near water heaters, washing machines, sinks, toilets, and plumbing. If a leak occurs, the sensor sends a signal to the controller, which shuts off the water at its source. Installation is simple. . . Operation is automatic.
Leaks do not give any warning signs. Hot water heaters, washing machine hoses, toilet and sink valves and hoses - can fail suddenly and leak continuously until the owner comes home and discover a flooded house and $1,000's of damage.
