A Cracker Barrel restaurant is on the menu for Mount Airy, city government sources say, which will serve up new jobs as well as home-style meals.
Rumors have swirled for months about such a development, leading to steps recently being undertaken through the Mount Airy Planning Department to make the new restaurant a reality. Construction is expected to begin in February at a site on U.S. 601 (Rockford Street) near its intersection with U.S. 52.
The plans have gone through and theyve been approved, city planner Andy Goodall said Tuesday regarding the restaurant. Goodalls work includes dealing with such projects, which must clear various regulatory hurdles.
"I think theyve already gone through technical review, Mount Airy Community-Development Director Martin Collins said Tuesday of the plans by Cracker Barrel Old Country Store.
The restaurant will be built on a 2.85-acre site at 1948 Rockford St., the longtime home of Merritt Supply and Mount Airy Saw and Mower, two businesses that have shared the same building. Officials of those operations earlier announced plans to open at a new location on North South Street by this Friday.
This paves the way for the new Cracker Barrel on Rockford Street/U.S. 601. To read more from The Mount Airy News, click here.

The way we interview job applicants is at least fifty years behind the times.
When we call a plumber to come over and get our kids sock out of the tub drain, we say How much do you charge per hour?
We dont ask the plumber If you were a can of soup, what kind of soup would you be?
The plumber would slam the phone down and hang up if we did that. Its insulting to ask people stupid questions like With all the talented candidates, why should we hire you? and Whats your greatest weakness?
Why do we see the insult in those questions when were talking toplumbers, but not when were talking to job-seekers?
All of us are professionals, and all of us are adults. We dont need to be addressed like children.
Most people in corporate and institutional life have been force-fed gallons of toxic lemonade over the years. We believe that the employer is mighty and the poor little job-seeker is an ant. The job-seeker has to grovel and beg for the job. We dont see how ridiculous that is.
The more marketable and confident a job-seeker is, the less likely he or she will be to bow and scrape and turn cartwheels to impress a hiring manager. Why would we ask anyone to do that?

Doing something often enough reveals patterns. Thats what has happened with Allegiancy, a commercial real estate asset manager, over the past 25 years as they have managed various real estate assets around the United States.
Allegiancy has found three recurring patterns: 1) properties without cash needing maintenance; 2) properties in distress from lack of attention and more than fundamental problems; and 3) properties with tenants threatening to leave and new tenants not signing on.
Allegiancy immediately recognized these patterns in three properties they took on in Atlanta; Columbia, S.C.; and Phoenix.
Property 1: Breckenridge Exchange Atlanta, Georgia
The Atlanta property was paralyzed by lack of money. The property owners and manager were desperate and skimping wherever they could. They hadnt added any new leases in two years. The property looked uncared for, and the tenants had lost all loyalty. Unpaid rent had reached tens of thousands of dollars.
Allegiancys approach: Spend a little, gain a lot.
Allegiancy met with the tenants and property manager to walk the property. They immediately saw several low-cost, high-impact improvements that could add curb appeal and signal tangible change.
Allegiancy had all the curbs painted, which instantly improved first impressions. Rather than replacing the large entry sign, they took out overgrown trees, cut back bushes covering it, and power washed it. They had all the budgeted flowers placed at the entrance of the property for maximum impact. Essentially, Allegiancy undertook a few simple projects to demonstrate leadership and visible progress to tenants.
Allegiancys Results: Happy tenants, new leasing.
