Most U.S. metro areas see gains in construction jobs

    - December 31, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

A new building industry report found that the number of construction jobs rose in 66% of U.S. metropolitan areas for the year that ended Nov. 30, a sign that the economic recovery is spreading to that once hard-hit sector.

The Associated General Contractors of America, the construction industry's largest trade group, said in its report released Tuesday that demand was so strong that some regions had begun to experience labor shortages.

"It is good news that construction employment is now rising in two-thirds of the nation's metro areas," said Ken Simonson, the group's chief economist. "But now that the unemployment rate for construction workers has fallen to a seven-year low, it has become a major challenge to find qualified workers in many fields."

The report found that employment in the industry grew in 224 of 339 metro areas.

The largest gains, by numbers, came in the Houston area, which added 16,200 construction jobs, an increase of 9% over the previous 12-month period.

That was followed by Dallas-Irving-Plano, Texas, with 11,000 more jobs, a 10% rise, greater Chicago, which added 9,100 jobs, or 7%, and Seattle-Bellevue-Everett, Wash., with 8,900 jobs, or 12%.

From a statewide perspective, California added 41,700 construction jobs, a 6% rise, to a total of 697,000, the group said.

The fastest growth came from the Santa Ana-Anaheim-Irvine area, which added 7,700 construction jobs, a 10% rise, and the Los Angeles-Long-Beach area, which added 6,100 jobs, up 5%.

The mostly positive news in the sector was tempered by the fact that some of the fastest growth during the year came in regions that are heavily dependent on the oil and gas business and thus vulnerable to the recent plunge in oil prices.

Besides the Texas metro areas, some of the fastest growth in construction jobs, relative to the size of the market, came from such oil-dependent regions as Pascagoula, Miss. (24% with 1,500 more jobs); Fargo, N.D. (19%, 1,600 jobs); and York-Hanover, Pa. (18%, 1,700 jobs).

Family of San Francisco window washer who survived 11-story fall receives $73,000 in donations

    - December 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SAN FRANCISCO - The family of a window washer who survived a fall from the top of an 11-story building in San Francisco's Financial District last month has raised more than $73,000 to help offset their expenses following the accident.

The fund was established on Dec. 11 and more than 1,160 people have donated money to the family of Pedro Perez, 58, via the fundraising website GoFundMe.

Perez was working when he fell from the top of a building at the intersection of California and Montgomery streets on the morning of Nov. 21.

He landed on a moving car and was seriously injured.

According to the GoFundMe website, Perez suffered extensive brain trauma and internal hemorrhaging, as well as a fractured pelvis, broken arm, and a ruptured artery in his right arm.

Perez is now able to converse with others and is regaining his memory. However, he remains unable to work and it is unclear whether he will be able to walk again, according to the GoFundMe site.

Perez's wife works at a factory in the East Bay and his 19-year-old daughter Monica Perez has taken time off from college to help support the family following the accident. His other two daughters are 11 and 16.

The family asked for donations from the public to help make ends meet, since Perez was the family breadwinner prior to the accident.

According to the GoFundMe site, the goal was to raise the difference between one year of Pedro's wages and the workers' compensation payments for the year, about $20,000. The fund is already at $73,140, more than three times that goal.

Last week, Perez's daughter Monica responded to the outpouring of support and the flood of donations.

Ormond tree's removal offers life lesson

    - December 30, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    Published: Monday, December 29, 2014 at 3:43 p.m. Last Modified: Monday, December 29, 2014 at 10:33 p.m.

ORMOND BEACH For more than half a century, a majestic pine tree provided ample shade on Bob Coxs property.

Bob Cox and son Austin Cox prepare to pull a pine tree to the ground Monday as Allen Cole uses a chain saw to bring the tree down at the Coxes home on Ormond Parkway off State Road A1A in Ormond Beach. Cox had been hoping to transplant the tree but that proved to be impractical.

Now it will serve a different purpose.

A month after Cox made a plea in The News-Journal for help in saving a 22-foot Norfolk pine planted close to his Ormond Parkway home, the tree met its maker Monday.

You see a beautiful tree like that and its sad to see it go, he said. The only consolation is were going to use it and make something out of it.

Cox had hoped to save the tree from meeting its demise after being told it could compromise his front walkway and patio. The tree was planted on the property in 1959.

The 64-year-old said he received several calls from people who also were hoping to save the tree. One woman came to inspect the grounds and determined it would likely be impossible to save the tree because it would be difficult to keep the roots intact.

Allen Cole, however, saw other potential for the pine tree. The Volusia man said hed be able to make several pieces of art from the tree, including wooden bowls and vases, one of which he said hed make for Coxs granddaughter.

I thought, I can make something out of that, said Cole, who is a member of the American Wood Turning Association and has been working with wood for more than 50 years. Im glad I could salvage some of it, anyway.

An 8-year-old girl has died after being hit by a falling tree branch at Pitt Town Public School in Sydney's north-west on Friday. Nine News.

Just seconds after the school bell sounded and children were crossing the Pitt Town Public School playground to retrieve their lunch from their bags, there was a snap and a loud thud.

A large branch from a 50-year-old gum tree fell and landed on top of three students and a teacher on Friday afternoon at the small school in semi-rural north-western Sydney.

Eight year-old Bridget Wright, a horse lover and high-achieving year 4 student, was pinned beneath a limb of the towering tree and died after being rushed to Westmead Hospital.
