NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) Members of a Brooklyn family woke up Monday morning to find a shocking site on their home security monitor.
As CBS2s Tony Aiello reported Monday night, the family found a masked man inside their home, just below the room where their children were sleeping. The man also had a gun.
When the police came, we looked over the video, and suddenly, what do I see? The guy has a gun! said burglary victim Haim Mitnizki. Its clear, and then I realized how lucky I was.
Mitnizki, of Crown Heights, was sound asleep early Monday morning when the burglar broke into a rear door and entered his home.
Mitnizki is in the security business, and his home is equipped with surveillance cameras and motion detectors. They set off a piercing alarm, and woke up the house.
Mitnizki said he looked at a video feed on his laptop and spotted the intruder.
I was yelling to my wife: Call the cops! Get the kids! Protect the kids! Im going downstairs, he said.
Mitnizki said he grabbed a knife for protection. But by the time he got downstairs, the burglar had fled.
This burglar was really brazen, Aiello reported. Not only did he target a house that was clearly marked as having home security, but he also broke one of the surveillance cameras as he approached the back door.
The NYPD was working to determine Monday night whether the burglary was linked to others. Meanwhile, the Shomrim, a local volunteer patrol, was warning residents.

The Sony hack -- and the FBI's conclusion that North Korea is responsible -- renewed security professionals' discussions of an ongoing cyberwar between countries and other opposing entities. Experts say we can expect more skirmishes to play out online rather than on the battlefield.
"Experts have been calling it a 'cyber Cold War' for some time, and that's only ramping up quickly," said Chris Petersen, CTO and co-founder of security intelligence company LogRhythm. "Nation-states both weak and strong see cyberattacks as a weapon to counter the global influence of the U.S."
Petersen also expects an increase in governments' use of malicious software to spy on certain individuals' activity. Last month Amnesty International released an anti-spyware tool that scans devices for government surveillance software.

Overall, the experts think the number of cyberattacks will increase during 2015 and beyond. It's scary stuff, but they hope the public conversation and awareness will increase as well.
"It doesn't happen overnight, but making changes requires starting the conversation," Petersen said. "Unfortunately, I do think truly moving forward will take a few years."
In the meantime, Coggeshall, the LifeLock executive, reiterated a handful of best practices "that will really protect the average person from the majority of attacks levied against them": Keep antivirus software updated, use strong passwords, never put sensitive personal information online or emails, exercise extreme caution when clicking links or downloading attachments and don't sign into accounts when using public Wi-Fi networks.
"We still have to tell people this stuff, which I think shows that in the next years we'll still be in this general discussion phase," said Thompson of Blue Coat. "There will be more breaches. But there will also be more and more discussion over dinner tables, and that's where awareness begins."

Kathleen Danby, 72, was sentenced in her absence to three months in jail by the secretive Court of Protection in April after a judge heard she embraced the vulnerable girl, 19, against the wishes of social services
A grandmother was hauled out of a comedy show and arrested on the orders of a family court judge simply for hugging her granddaughter.
Kathleen Danby, 72, was sentenced in her absence to three months in jail by the secretive Court of Protection in April after a judge heard she embraced the vulnerable girl, 19, against the wishes of social services.
In an extraordinary move, she was arrested on Sunday night as she watched the comedian Ken Dodd at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall.
Last night the grandmother was being held in custody, police confirmed. She is expected to be taken to court this morning.
The girls father, who cannot be named for legal reasons, has condemned her arrest as absolutely ridiculous.
The 37-year-old handyman said: She was sat there in the concert. The usher came down and said there were people wanting to speak to her. When she got into the foyer there were two police officers and she was arrested.

Robots are making great strides not just in the science world but also at home. Photo: Bloomberg
At the end of every year in recent memory, it seems, high-tech optimists have predicted the next year as the one when robots will finally lift from our shoulders the burden of dreary domestic tasks.
Think washing floors, scrubbing the grill, cutting the lawn, watering plants, changing cat litter, vacuuming the carpet - and, for good measure, pacifying the baby and entertaining the older children.
That was certainly the case at the close of 2013, said Dan Kara, a robotics analyst with ABI Research. "This was supposed to be the year where everything was going to be different," Kara said. "Again."
And while that home-robotics revolution didn't exactly come to fruition this year, Kara said a handful of interesting robotic debuts in 2014 brought consumers one step closer to the chore-free home of the future.

That sentiment was echoed by two others who closely follow the consumer robotics industry: Erico Guizzo, editor of the Automaton blog of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and Andra Keay, managing director of Silicon Valley Robotics, an industry group. Based on recommendations from these specialists, as well as some firsthand tests, here are 10 notable robots that made their debut this year.
Neato Botvac: Vacuums constitute the biggest and most competitive consumer-robotics category in the marketplace, and they're getting better. The earliest models were criticised for their over-reliance on humans to maintain them. ("I had to constantly clean my cleaning robot," Guizzo said.) Owners also had to drag the bots to their charging stations when the batteries died, and move furniture that the robots couldn't squeeze beneath. The Neato Botvac ($899 to $999) requires less cleaning than the earliest robotic vacuums, and it features good pickup power and a low profile that helps it sneak under couches. My favorite feature: when the battery is low, the Botvac returns to its charging station. When Dyson's much-anticipated robot appears next year, watch for similar features.

Early in December, 2014, Super-Sod's second solar farm went on-line in partnership with Georgia Power and Hannah Solar. The photovoltaic cells span five acres of their sod farm in Marshallville, Georgia.
Their new solar farm produces 1 megawatt of electricity a year. All the green energy harvested from the sun at the turf company's solar farm goes directly into the grid. The number of homes 1 MW will power varies by region and according to the Solar Energy Industry Association's calculations, this is enough energy to power 92 homes in Georgia.
Their first solar farm went on-line in 2013 in Lakeland, GA. It's a 10 acre solar farm producing 2 MW in partnership with Invenergy, LLC.
Both solar farms are part of Super-Sod's commitment to green technology and sustainable development.
Super-Sod is a family-run business that employs experts in turf and horticulture. One of their most popular products has been their Soil3 organic compost, delivered in a cubic yard BigYellowBag, which they make partially from composted grass clippings from their sod production. Super-Sod continues to develop new garden products, foster gardening and landscaping, and always seeks to improve their farming practices, technology, environmental stewardship, and employee knowledge.
