Chito Roos Feng Shui (2004) was released at a time when Filipinos were hungry for horror.

There was Hideo Nakatas Ringu (1998, local release 2002), Takashi Shimizus Ju-On (2002, local release 2004), and other horror films of the same ilk followed suit.

Feng Shui proved to be quite a success with its unabashed appropriation a lot of the style and technique of its Japanese counterparts, without being too much of a copycat.

Of course, extremely popular Kris Aquino, who plays the films heroine with nary an effort to look convincingly terrorized, is part and parcel of the films hefty haul at the box office. Roo and Aquino would again team-up to redo Feng Shuis magic with Sukob (2006).

Later on, Roo would come up with horror flicks with other big-name stars like T2 (2009) and The Healing (2012). Similarly, Aquino would also star in horror films helmed by other directors such as Dondon Santos Dalaw (2010) and Joyce Bernals Segunda Mano (2011). However, despite the moderate accomplishments of either their collaborative or individual efforts, Feng Shui remains unmatched.

Ten years after

It seems that Feng Shuis allure has something to do with its subject matter, which is essentially the creation of horror out of the exoticism of Chinese culture within a Filipino landscape. The films preoccupation with punishing greed with the death of loved ones points to a moral dilemma a lot of Filipinos are forced to face: what are you willing to give up to rise above your misfortunes?

Feng Shui 2 is the very belated sequel to 2004's Feng Shui. It concerns the same antique bagua that terrorized a family ten years ago. Lester (Coco Martin) is a small time hustler struggling to make ends meet. He is tasked with retrieving an antique bagua mirror from the scene of an apparent suicide. He manages to complete the job, but the bagua somehow returns to his possession. At first, it seems to bring Lester and his family good fortune, but it doesn't take very long for it to reveal its sinister intentions. The people around him are dying, falling prey to the spirits inside the antique. The former owners of the bagua show up at his doorstep, hoping to put the curse to rest once and for all.

The movie is at its most effective in its first hour, where it mainly focuses on the grand reversal of fortune that Lester encounters. The film quickly establishes his situation, exploring the world of characters that exists around him. And then it introduces the threat and smartly tears that world apart. What makes these segments so powerful is that they adhere to a strong sense of logic, a set of rules that loosely define how these hapless people meet their end. The ghosts rarely take direct action. Their power lies in tricking people into harming themselves.

Things get a little silly in the last third of the film, as the characters get caught in somewhat of a wild goose chase. The focus shifts from Lester to a couple of the other characters, and the narrative goes off into different directions. It just stops being scary, the movie piling on the complications and losing the stakes in the process. The characters are told over and over what they must do, and it feels as if the movie is just stalling for time, introducing a whole new set of rules to justify the changes.

To the film's credit, it lays down the groundwork for some of these developments, but the core idea that runs the back end just doesn't really hold up. The film throws in a whole lot of mumbo jumbo about how the bagua is more dangerous now, and how it ties to the zodiac cycle. And it never really feels organic to the story. It feels as though the film is just trying to cover its tracks with a surplus of information. Meanwhile, the characters aren't really given a chance to properly deal with the drama of their situation.

But all in all, the movie is solid enough. Some of the darker scenes end up looking a tad grainy, but for the most part, the movie gets a lot out of its shots. There's a lot of cleverness in this movie, and though some of it feels extraneous (the shots of zodiac animals marking deaths don't really land), the thinking behind many of these decisions is greatly appreciated. The acting is solid enough, though it all gets a little shrill by the end. Coco Martin is really good when he's out of his depth, the growing desperation visible in his every gesture.

Feng Shui 2 doesn't really offer a satisfying conclusion. The climax entails a solution to the problem that doesn't feel like a solution at all, and as is standard for local horror movies, it leaves enough open for future installments of the series. The movie introduces so many new elements to the myth in its back end that it all feels really arbitrary. The movie is best when it plays by its own rules, building the horror from a logical set of circumstances. Thankfully, the movie does that for a good long time, which is more than one can say for most local examples of the genre.

Feng Shui 2 Movie Review - 'Feng Shui 2' Changes the Rules at the End

'Praybeyt Benjamin 2', 'Feng Shui 2' continue to rule the 40th MMFF 2014 Box Office now with a combined gross of P260-million.

As announced on 'The Buzz'' earlier, the 2 ABS-CBN-produced entries, 'The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin' and 'Feng Shui 2', already earned P172-million and P88-million respectively in the MMFF 2014 Box Office, as of 3PM today, December 28, the 4th day of the festival. By tomorrow, it is expected that TAPB will hit P200M mark, while Feng Shui 2 will pass P100M. These movies are certified box-office winners, but sadly, they were heavily snubbed at the MMFF 2014 Awards Night or Gabi Ng Parangal held last night. They didn't win a single award.

Was it intentional on the part of the Metro Manila Filmfest committee to not give these 2 any awards since they are already lording the box-office? Maybe yes, to help other entries pick up in the box-office after winning many awards, but it could also be the other way, since 2 other films were also empty-handed last night: 'Shake, Rattle & Roll XV' and 'Muslim Magnum .357'.

It was the worst thing that happened for 'The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin' during the Awards Night. I was expecting this Vice Ganda starrer to at least get nominations for Tom Rodriguez and Alex Gonzaga as Best Supporting Actor and Actress, but sadly, their efforts were overlooked.

The nominees for Best Supporting Actor were Kean Cipriano for 'English Only, Please', Joey Marquez for 'Kubot: the Aswang Chronicles 2', Roi Vinzon for 'Muslim Magnum .357', Jose Manalo and Sef Cadayona for 'My Big Bossing'. For the first time, Marquez won.

On the other hand, nominated for Best Supporting Actress were Cai Cortez ('English Only, Please'), Lotlot de Leon ('Kubot'), Nikki Gil ('My Big Bossing'), Chanda Romero ('SRR 15') and Carmi Martin ('Feng Shui 2'). Lotlot was named the winner, also her first time ever.

Is TAPB the worst among the 8 entries in terms of cinematic quality? It's the least nominated film, getting just 1 nomination: Best Child Performer for Bimby Aquino Yap, who however lost to My Big Bossing's Ryzza Mae Dizon.

Chito Roo's 'Feng Shui 2', though it also won nothing despite being graded A by the Cinema Evaluation Board (CEB), somehow fared better than TAPB, getting nominated in many categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress. Roo lost to 'English Only, Please' director Dan Villegas. Other nominees for Best Directing were Enzo Williams ('Bonifacio'), Erik Matti ('Kubot') and Jerrold Tarog ('SRR 15: Ulam episode').

Movies who were underperforming in the box-office the past 3 days will likely earn more now after collecting many awards last night. These are the Best Picture winner 'Bonifacio: Ang Unang Pangulo', with 8 awards, and especially, the 2nd Best Picture 'English Only, Please', which had 7 awards including Best Actor for Derek Ramsay and Best Actress for Jennylyn Mercado.

MMFF 2014 Box Office winners Praybeyt Benjamin, Feng Shui get snubbed at the Awards Night

Based on the latest MMFF 2014 Box Office Results, 'The Amazing Praybeyt Benjamin' already crossed the P200-million mark in the MMFF 2014 Box Office after 4 days in theater, while another entry 'Feng Shui 2', the first local film to be shown in 4D, has reached the P100-million mark in 4 days.

Shall we expect now 'The Amazing Praybet Benjamin' to become the new highest grossing Pinoy film of all time after its impressive run in theaters?

TAPB has now also claimed the record: fastest movie to hit hit P200M (in just 4 days).

Meanwhile, another entry is also having an impressive run so far, Chito Roo''s 'Feng Shui 2',the first movie team-up of the Queen of Horror Films Kris Aquino and Primetime King Coco Martin.

How does Troy's character change over the course of the play?

Troy Maxson transforms into a lonely, unloved, fearful man from his original position as the center of attention in his family and social world. Though he constantly tries to escape his life, Troy Maxson tries to engage life and challenge Death because he believes in himself and his convictions, however illusionary they may be. Troy begins by confronting his employees about their discriminatory practices, he boasts to his best friend Bono and family member that he is not afraid of death and he keeps a secret that he thinks he can get away with about his affair with Alberta. When Troy demands respect from his son, Cory, he gets it and when he teases his other son Lyons, Troy feels bigger and better. Shown through the three Fridays interspersed in Fences, Troy rapidly descends into a lonely, friendless and loveless life when his fears, his anger and his secrets get the better of him, causing his loved ones to lose their respect for him and to change their life so that they do not depend on his presence anymore. Troy forfeits his role of loving and devoted husband, generous and responsible parent and loyal, honest and inspiring friend. Troy goes from juggling two relationships with women to having none. Troy calls the risky action of having an affair with Alberta, "stealing second." If that is how Troy plays ball at the beginning of the play, then one could say he ends the play as a benchwarmer.

Are Troy's problems self-created or out of his control?

In some ways, Troy had no control over his disappointments. Troy's self-doubts are rooted in his disappointing life and the hardships he endured while providing for himself and his family. Troy's demise is a combination of his own actions coming back to haunt him, a racist society and bad luck. Troy was born into a large, poor family with only an abusive, but hardworking father as a caretaker. He did not have any resources when he had to leave his father's house and he ended up in jail because he committed petty crimes to survive. In jail, Troy learned baseball and discovered he could play in the Negro Leagues as one of the best home-run hitters. But when Troy was at his prime, the professional well-paying Major Leagues closed their doors to black players. Unable to support his family, Troy becomes an employee of the sanitation department, working hard for many years without a promotion because of discrimination in the union's hiring practices.

However, Troy's affair with Alberta, his denial of Cory's promising future and his complaint against his union all represent choices Troy actively makes without hindrance, for better and for worse. Troy's act of signing the papers that sent Gabe away to the mental hospital combines both types of Troy's problems. It is a fateful and actively chosen problem. Troy does commit the act of signing Gabe away, but because he cannot read, Troy made the decision in ignorance. As the play progresses, Troy can no longer justify his behavior and his secrets and misdeeds get the better of him. The roles he once played with friends and family as a figurehead and role model, unravel because of the poor choices he made with the obstacles he faced.

Discuss the significance of the title, Fences, as it relates to characters and themes of the play.

Bono explains to Cory and Troy the reason for Rose's request for them to build a fence as an outside observer. Bono observes that Rose wants them to build the fence because she wants her loved ones kept close to her. Bono also explains that some people build fences to push people away. Bono is the only one who knows about Troy's affair with Alberta, which he believes will destroy the bonds of the Maxson family. Bono turns the action of building the fence into a metaphor of behavior that defines the central conflict of the play. Troy pushes Cory and Rose away while Rose and Cory try to live up to Troy's expectations and meet his demands. Wilson's writing emphasizes the Maxson family's roots in slavery with symbols, themes and storytelling. Wilson's title, Fences stands for larger boundaries than the ones created physically and emotionally in the Maxson household. The symbol of the fence also alludes to geographical boundaries and legal boundaries. Troy's last name attests to this as an amalgamation of the Mason-Dixon line that, starting in 1820, was the term used to describe the imaginary line separating the slave states from the free states. The title, Fences refers to the choices Wilson's characters make with their lives in their fair or unfair treatment of others.
