Help (Still) Wanted: A Plumber For A Rural Town In Maine

    - December 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Something's missing in the small town of Jackman, Maine. They've have an electrician and some carpenters among their 800-odd residents, but no plumber even after establishing a scholarship for local students to become certified.

In August, a couple in Jackman, Maine, created a scholarship for a high school student willing to train as a plumber and come back to work in the rural town. Months later, the search continues.

"From the school standpoint, we haven't had anyone terribly interested," says Denise Plante, the principal of Jackman's Forest Hills Consolidated School District.

As 2014 draws to a close, NPR's Weekends on All Things Considered is checking back on some of the most compelling stories of the year. Here's what we wrote about Jackman in August:

In the isolated town of Jackman, Maine, which has a population of around 800, the local plumber recently retired. Now, the closest plumber is in the nearest town 50 miles away.

To fill the void, one family has partnered with the local school district to create a scholarship. The 2015 Inza and Harry Hughey Memorial Scholarship will award $2,000 to a local graduate willing to become a certified plumber and come back to work in the town. ...

The preference is to have a student or past graduate of Forest Hill High School receive the scholarship.

There have been inquiries from people around the country and even overseas, but because the town is so isolated, the scholarship's goal is really to get a student familiar with the area to train and come back.

Overlooked Health Benefits of Pest Control Houston, TX

Most people use our pest control services because they don't want to be bothered by Houston area pests. There are good reasons to do this, because pests in your home are a nuisance, an interruption, an inconvenience, and an embarrassment.

They also damage items and create messes, meaning you end up spending more time cleaning up their droppings, regurgitations, stains, dead bodies, and cast-off skins--sometimes not even knowing this stuff came from pests. Yuck! If the benefits from regular professional pest control ended there, it would be more than enough.

But an even bigger value of pest control and living pest-free is somewhat less obvious, and it involves health issues with pests. By employing pest control before problems become bigger, we actually make your home a much healthier place to live.

The recent Salmonella outbreak caused by contaminated peanuts underscores the problems pests cause. An unknown number of people have become sick, and some have died, because of poor sanitation and pest control in the peanut factory. It can come from various sources, but pests like rats, mice, cockroaches, and other pests are common transmitters of this disease.

Actually, it is surprising how common Salmonella poisoning is. There are 1.4 million cases of this illness every year in this country, and 500 people die from it. And Salmonella poisoning is only one of hundreds of diseases pests spread or transmit. Preventive pest control is an important safeguard to healthy living.

Pest-busting: An 'evolving' yet seemingly unglamorous profession

    - December 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

SINGAPORE: Pest controllers found themselves in the spotlight recently, after news broke of a rat infestation in Bukit Batok.

But besides hunting down rats, pest controllers are also experts in various types of insects and pests like rats, snakes, monitor lizards and monkeys.

"Pest control is a business that is non-glamorous because you are heading to all those dirty areas that are not so clean in terms of the environment itself, said Afendi, senior manager of operations at PestBusters. Technically, we deal with everything under the sun except one thing - humans."

Afendi has been in the industry for over a decade. He began his career as a service technician and he now heads the operations team at his company. For him, it's something that he's passionate about. "The perspective of the public would be, 'Ewww ... why are you in the pest control or pest management industry?" said Afendi.

When I joined the company 15 years ago, I have got my aunties and my family members saying, don't you have any other jobs that you want to actually do? There are a lot of things that I find enjoyable. Every day you meet with different scope of people, different scope of pests. It's just something ... you cannot anticipate what is going to happen tomorrow. That's how exciting it is."

But everything that he does is aimed at ensuring that the living environment is conducive for humans. In the course of his work, he has become an expert about the various types of pests that exist in our environment.

PestBusters even has a special display cabinet with specimens of the different pests they have caught, which is used for training purposes. When it comes to certain animal species, they know more than the average person does. "The Paradise Tree Snake is very common in landed properties, explained Afendi. We have the Elegant Bronzeback and also the Mangrove Snake. These are the relatively common snakes; almost every now and then we will receive calls to remove the snakes."

Carl Baptista has been working in the industry since he was a teenager. He manages his family-owned business, Origin Exterminators. He has been in the business long enough to know that not all bees are bad.

"Apis dorsata, the giant honeybee, is a very, very aggressive specie, and that's the only one that needs to be removed, he explained. The others don't actually need to be removed but we remove all bee hives in Singapore. With the Apis dorsata, all bee hive removals must only be done after sunset. If you don't do it after sunset, what you can do is you can cause them to swarm and you can actually create a bigger risk to public."
