NO LAUGHING MATTER: What is the pope?

    - December 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

While addressing a group of children recently, I happened to mention the pope and I was completely flabbergasted to learn that not one of these 11 and 12-year-olds had ever heard the word pope.

If they did not know the popes name, or even if they did not know what his role is, or where he lives, or where he is from, I would not have been so upset. But they all claimed that they had never heard the word pope.

If it were one or two of the group who had never heard the word, I probably would not have been so shocked, but it was the entire class which came from different homes and different schools. It really threw me in a spin.

This experience set me thinking about education, learning and parenting. Is our educational system beneficial to the majority of our children? Is learning being experienced as fulfilling and exciting so as to capture the interest of the majority.

It used to be said that what the previous generation knew at 16 years old, the new generation knows at 12 years old. This philosophy signified that there was marked improvement in education and development of the mind, as it should be for the development and advancement of a people.

But now that thinking (generational improvement) seems to be stagnated or has even gone backwards and it is not only evident in general knowledge but also in spelling, reading and in analytical thinking.

I believe that a great percentage of todays Barbadian children are not able to cope with the change in workload that occurs in the move from primary school to secondary school. To move from doing primarily two subjects, maths and English, and then three months later in secondary school they are doing about ten subjects, can be quite overwhelming for many of our students.

There should be a system used where we can determine which children have the capacity to adapt to such a drastic change in workload and at what age. Every child is not ready for secondary school at age 11. Some might not be ready until 13 years old.

Placing a child in that environment before it is ready can hamper its progress. Everyone does not develop at the same pace. I believe that our students would be more productive if we found a way to determine their academic capabilities at that early age.

Also, it would be to the islands advantage if we could determine the childs interest and skill area at an early age. I strongly believe that if the children show the definite talent for carpentry, mechanics, art and so on, they should be channelled in that specific direction from early.

Non-explosive demolition agents – Wikipedia, the free …

    - December 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Non-explosive demolition agents are commercial products that are an alternative to explosives and gas pressure blasting products in demolition, mining, and quarrying.[1] To use non-explosive demolition agents in demolition or quarrying, holes are drilled in the base rock like they would be drilled for use with conventional explosives. A slurry mixture of the non-explosive demolition agent and water is poured into the drill holes. Over the next few hours the slurry expands, cracking the rock in a pattern somewhat like the cracking that would occur from conventional explosives.

Non-explosive demolition agents offer many advantages including that they are silent and do not produce vibration the way a conventional explosive would. In some applications conventional explosives are more economical than non-explosive demolition agents. In many countries these are available without restriction unlike explosives which are highly regulated.

These agents are much safer than explosives, but it is important to follow directions closely in order to avoid steam explosions during the first few hours after these materials are placed.

Pavilion demolition is the end of an era

    - December 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

THE demolition of a former community hub has been called the end of an era.

Corwen Pavilion was at the heart of the town for the best part of a century but now, after Denbighshire County Council announced its demolition would start in Janaury, the community is mourning its loss.

County councillor for Corwen Huw Jones said the loss would be keenly felt, particularly among the generations which would have been young during its heyday in the late 70s and early 80s.

It really is the end of an era, he said.

Peoples memories have been left behind there.

It will be a sad day when demolition begins.

The council took the decision to close the Pavilion in April 2010 after a structural survey confirmed there were numerous issues with the roof structure and deteriorating foundations as well as wet rot, dry rot, furniture beetle infestation, inadequate heating systems and asbestos.

Cllr Jones blamed events promoters who he said sucked money out of the town and never gave anything back.

You cant just blame the council, he added.

Not enough was ploughed back in by promoters, they cleaned Corwen out and where are they now?

Crashes, burnouts and thrills at demolition derby

    - December 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Action during the demolition derby. Photo: Rohan Thomson

While many Canberrans were hoping to avoid a car crash on their way to the south coast, others at Moruya were deliberately seeking one.

Moruya's finest, clad with flannel shirts and beers in hand, watched a dusty demolition derby from the comfort of their living room couch, perched on the back of their utes, of course.

The rules of the game were simple - drive your car into other vehicles as fast possible and cause as much damage as possible, while avoiding injury.

"The demolition derby is the real drawcard for people who haven't been to a racetrack before," race marshal Ian Riley said.

"The drivers hold up a white flag when they've had enough and the cars often leave a metre or two shorter."

Mr Riley, who resembled Moruya's Hunter S Thompson lookalike, organised the drivers with no sign of a serious injuries he got just six weeks earlier.

While racing at another meeting, Mr Riley struck a wall at 80km/h in his cart and broke three ribs, punctured a lung, and damaged vertebrae.

He was just one of many drivers who boasted about their extensive injury lists, added to over many years at racetracks on the south coast.

Oldest murals in Phoenix in danger with demolition plans

    - December 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

If one developer gets its way, some of the oldest works in Phoenix may be long gone come February.

Arizona artist Ted DeGrazia painted a series of murals inside 222 E. Roosevelt St. in 1950. GreenHAUS is currently housed in the building, but the business will be relocating in Feb. 2015.

Developer Baron Properties/North Roosevelt Apartments LLC hasn't publicly released all their design details yet, but the general plan would include demolition of the 222 E. Roosevelt building and the adjacent office complex at the northwest corner of 3rd and Roosevelt Streets.

A Change.org petition calls upon Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton to halt these plans and preserve the historic building and murals. Community organization This Could Be Phoenix also has proposed an alternative plan, according to the petition authors.

Chinese police detain suspects in AIDS demolition case

    - December 28, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Police in Nanyang, Henan province, have detained the leaders of a house demolition team alleged to have used AIDS patients and HIV carriers to threaten locals to move away, according to the city's publicity department.

Local police did not reveal details, saying the team is still being investigated and it is not yet known whether it included genuine AIDS patients or just used the possibility of infection with the disease as a threat.

Nanyang's Wolong district government and the city's Yi'an Property Development Co denied they set up such a team to clear the way for real estate projects.

Ma Bing, Party chief of Wolong district, said the district government has established a special task force to probe the case.

"The findings will be made public, as the case has raised great concern among local residents," Ma told local media.

A lawyer said organising such a demolition team violated the rights and interests of not only property owners but also AIDS patients and HIV carriers.

Residents in the district's Sanchang housing estate said the team arrived in a housing estate at the beginning of December, according to Beijing News.

"They showed their medical record books that indicated they were AIDS patients to threaten locals to move away," a local housewife surnamed Liu was quoted as saying by Beijing News.

"They told us they were actually hired by a local real estate developer for 300,000 yuan (S$63,000) to force locals to move away for construction of a new real estate project, and they wanted to earn a large sum of money to treat the disease and make a living," Liu said.

"They began harassing residents by visiting every household in the estate and even setting off firecrackers at midnight," Liu said.
