A CHINESE Lantern caused a fire which ignited two garden sheds and a fence on Christmas Day.
Now, Dorset Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) has urged members of the public not to use the lanterns during the festive and New Year celebrations due to their volatility.
Firefighters were called to Preston Road in Overcombe just after 7pm after a member of the public reported that their shed was on fire.
Two crews from Weymouth attended the incident, and used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire, which had engulfed two sheds and an area of fencing by the time firefighters arrived.
Anne Newell, watch manager for DFRS and incident commander, said: Two sheds were damaged by fire including an area of fencing. The cause was a stray chinese lantern.
Now, the service is urging members of the public not to use the lanterns during festive and New Year celebrations due to their risk.
Dave Allen, Community Safety Advisor at DFRS, also attended the scene and said: We recommend that members of the public do not use Chinese lanterns.
Due to their volatility they can stray and pose a fire risk to members of the public, property and animals."
Dorset Fire and Rescue Service will be revisiting the area to provide community safety advice in the coming days.

The Stay Strong initiative aims to reach out to schools, universities and hospitals to educate children about the disease and ways to prevent it.
As part of the campaign, a mobile phone app called Stay Strong was launched recently.
Dubai against Diabetes is a noble cause and we hope to target as many people as possible through the campaign. West Coast recruit Xavier Ellis admits he was glad former coach John Worsfold wasn't around to challenge him to a race when he arrived for the AFL club's pre-season training.
Ellis struggled to maintain his elite fitness levels during his last three years at Hawthorn, with a myriad of foot, calf and knee injuries restricting him to just 16 games over that period.
The 2008 premiership midfielder secured a trade to West Coast at the end of last year, but he knew he was starting way behind others at the start of pre-season.
"I didn't come over in peak condition. I didn't play much footy for a couple of years, so I was a bit overweight, sloppy and a bit unfit," Ellis said.
"I remember Murray Newman losing a 2km (time trial) to John Worsfold (in 2012). He would have had me too.
"But I'm fit now. The fitness staff and doctors have been great."
If Ellis was a superstitious person, the injury-prone midfielder would have been a tad worried when he first arrived in Perth.
"I moved all my stuff over. Most of it broke on the train," he said with a laugh.
But Ellis' time in the west has been smooth so far.

As many of you will know Ive been rather busy in the past few months. My work placement at a local museum meant that I couldnt find the time to watch as much wrestling and MMA as I usually did. But as I have the next couple of weeks off Ive decided to catch up on a few recent shows.
And what better place is there to start than with something that has impressed the hell out of me in the past and WWEs feeder group, NXT, as we take a look at their most recent offering, Takeover: R-Evolution.
The show began with singles action the debuting Kevin Owens took on C.J. Parker.
To say that the former Mr. Steen put in an impressive showing in his first WWE outing would not be underestimating things. It was the perfect way to introduce the former ROH star to the WWE crowd, a short, high-intensity battle designed to show SteenI mean Owens at his best.
Parker managed to get in a few blows, but at the end of the day there was only ever going to be one result here. There may not have been a package piledriver, but Owens took the win with a pop-up powerbomb. Nice stuff.
The first title match of the evening saw the Vaudevillains team of Aiden English and Simon Gotch challenging Sin Cara and Kalisto, the Lucha Dragons, for the NXT Tag Team Championship.
This wasnt too bad for what it was. You couldnt really call it a back and forth encounter. Cara began the match for his team, and it wasnt long before English and Gotch were giving him the punching bag treatment as they put together a nice sequence of moves.
The masked man eventually somersaulted his way out of his opponents corner for the hot tag to the other masked man, and thats when the bodies began to fly as the luchadores put together a string of high flying moves, and after they flew over the top rope to take English out of the picture Kalisto took Gotch down with the SDS for the title retaining pin.
It was back to singles action for the next match as Tye Dillinger faced Baron Corbin.
The blink of youll miss it affair of the evening saw Corbin, who has apparently been finishing off his opponents in double quick time, dominate the match as he took Dillinger down with snake eyes, a big boot, and his end of days finisher for the win. Thats about it really.

The Chinese room is a thought experiment presented by John Searle (1932-living) to challenge the claim that it is possible for a digital computer running a program to have a "mind" and "consciousness"[a] in the same sense that people do, simply by virtue of running the right program. The experiment is intended to help refute a philosophical position that Searle named "strong AI":
"The appropriately programmed computer with the right inputs and outputs would thereby have a mind in exactly the same sense human beings have minds."[b]
To contest this view, Searle writes in his first description of the argument: "Suppose that I'm locked in a room and ... that I know no Chinese, either written or spoken". He further supposes that he has a set of rules in English that "enable me to correlate one set of formal symbols with another set of formal symbols", that is, the Chinese characters. These rules allow him to respond, in written Chinese, to questions, also written in Chinese, in such a way that the posers of the questions who do understand Chinese are convinced that Searle can actually understand the Chinese conversation too, even though he cannot. Similarly, he argues that if there is a computer program that allows a computer to carry on an intelligent conversation in a written language, the computer executing the program would not understand the conversation either.
The experiment is the centerpiece of Searle's Chinese room argument which holds that a program cannot give a computer a "mind", "understanding" or "consciousness", regardless of how intelligently it may make it behave. The argument is directed against the philosophical positions of functionalism and computationalism, which hold that the mind may be viewed as an information processing system operating on formal symbols. Although it was originally presented in reaction to the statements of artificial intelligence researchers, it is not an argument against the goals of AI research, because it does not limit the amount of intelligence a machine can display. The argument applies only to digital computers and does not apply to machines in general. This kind of argument against AI was described by John Haugeland as the "hollow shell" argument.[4]
Searle's argument first appeared in his paper "Minds, Brains, and Programs", published in Behavioral and Brain Sciences in 1980. It has been widely discussed in the years since.
Searle's thought experiment begins with this hypothetical premise: suppose that artificial intelligence research has succeeded in constructing a computer that behaves as if it understands Chinese. It takes Chinese characters as input and, by following the instructions of a computer program, produces other Chinese characters, which it presents as output. Suppose, says Searle, that this computer performs its task so convincingly that it comfortably passes the Turing test: it convinces a human Chinese speaker that the program is itself a live Chinese speaker. To all of the questions that the person asks, it makes appropriate responses, such that any Chinese speaker would be convinced that he is talking to another Chinese-speaking human being.
The question Searle wants to answer is this: does the machine literally "understand" Chinese? Or is it merely simulating the ability to understand Chinese?[c] Searle calls the first position "strong AI" and the latter "weak AI".[d]
Searle then supposes that he is in a closed room and has a book with an English version of the computer program, along with sufficient paper, pencils, erasers, and filing cabinets. Searle could receive Chinese characters through a slot in the door, process them according to the program's instructions, and produce Chinese characters as output. If the computer had passed the Turing test this way, it follows, says Searle, that he would do so as well, simply by running the program manually.
Searle asserts that there is no essential difference between the roles of the computer and himself in the experiment. Each simply follows a program, step-by-step, producing a behavior which is then interpreted as demonstrating intelligent conversation. However, Searle would not be able to understand the conversation. ("I don't speak a word of Chinese," he points out.) Therefore, he argues, it follows that the computer would not be able to understand the conversation either.
Searle argues that without "understanding" (or "intentionality"), we cannot describe what the machine is doing as "thinking" and since it does not think, it does not have a "mind" in anything like the normal sense of the word. Therefore he concludes that "strong AI" is false.

Irvine, CA (PRWEB) December 26, 2014
On Saturday, December 20, West Coast property management firm Action Property Management announced that Antis Roofing and Waterproofing is the recipient of their 2014 Community Service Award. The award, according to Action president and CEO Marianne Simek, is given each year to a vendor who represents Actions mission of improving the quality of peoples lives. This vendor goes beyond the profit motive to make the best use of time, money and resources to better the world in which we live. Antis received this award because of its work with Habitat for Humanity of Orange County. Since 2009, Antis has provided the roofing installations on all of the organizations new home builds.
Its great to be recognized for our community service, said Antis president and Habitat for Humanity of Orange County board member Charles Antis. And not just because it feels good. Awards like this bring attention to the people in our community who are struggling and need help, and this attention is what brings resources to the organizations that meet that need.
Habitat for Humanity of Orange Countys most recent construction projects include a number of recently completed townhomes in Cypress. This December, five families achieved their dream of affordable homeownership, while 10 more homes are currently under construction with plans for completion in 2015.
According to its website, Action Property Management, which provides HOA and high rise management, among other services, participates in extensive philanthropic outreach through its Action Cares program. Organizations that benefit from Action Cares include Kids Alive International and Habitat for Humanitys Greater San Francisco chapter.
We thank Action Property Management for this award and for their continual efforts to bring attention to these important causes, said Antis. And we hope that this story will encourage other businesses and individuals to reach out and help others when they can. As members of the property maintenance and construction community, Habitat for Humanity is a great fit for us, but there are literally thousands of organizations out there that need support.

A slice of Anthonys famous pizza. (Photo: News-Press)
In a controversial move to push it out of its long-time W. Broad Street location in the City of Falls Church in the summer of 2013, the legendary Anthonys Restaurant had to wait a year until last summer to have its new location at Route 50 and Annandale Road ready. But the agony over the lost old space and the year-long hiatus in the business is now long and forgotten, as the new location at 3000 Annandale Road is thriving in a big way. To many in the City of Falls Church, including the over 500 who signed petitions to keep the restaurant open where construction of a major new mixed use project (that will be anchored by a large Harris Teeter supermarket) is now well underway, the loss of Anthonys which grew into its old location over more than 40 years of service, was painful and hard to take.
But rather than just sink into history, the tenacity of the family of Greek immigrants has surprised everybody. Led by patriarch and matriarch Anthony and Faye Yiannarakis, the family business is now also being augmented by the work of their grown children and the spouse of daughter Penny, Peter Zoutis, who also hails from Greece.
Thriving in their new location, a spacious 4,400 square feet not far from the major Route 50 at Annandale Road intersection, the modestly-priced family-style restaurant seems like a better fit in its new location, serving a large community on the south side of Rt. 50, than it was on W. Broad, where it was fast becoming a bit of an aging anomaly in an area of high commercial and mixed use growth.
Anybody who has lived in Falls Church for any period of time is undoubtedly familiar with the core Anthonys menu, with abundant portions of spaghetti dishes, submarine sandwiches and outstanding pizza.
But the menu developed to attend the reopening at the new location is also larger and more comprehensive, beginning with 10 appetizer choices including calamari, stuffed grape leaves, spinach and feta cheese turnovers, tzatziki and pita, a combo tzatziki, hummus and eggplant dip with pita bread.
In addition to a soup of the day, a staple at the old location often being either navy bean or split pea, the menu now includes french onion and avgolemono as regular items, the latter being traditional Greek-style chicken, lemon and rice soup.
The array of salad options has grown to nine and there are an abundance of sandwiches, ranging from classic BLT, turkey, bacon, avocado and aged provolone, to crab cake, pastrami, corned beef and turkey reuben, three club sandwich choices (turkey, ham and cheese, roast beef and cheese and tuna and egg), the burger, cheeseburger and Greek burger (beef and pork infused with fresh herbs), pita bread sandwiches and 14 varieties of subs. Signature dinners include 10 Greek choices, six seafood options, six steak, pork and chicken choices and 13 pasta options, with arrays of toppings options (whole wheat pasta being available upon request for an additional $1.50).
Then there is their classic New York style pizza in three sizes (nine, 12 and 16 inches) with 22 topping options, including four premium toppings, and white pizza that features extra virgin olive oil, fresh garlic, mozzarella cheese and fresh basil.
There is a kids menu, and 18 dessert choices, including six homemade desserts (baklava, rice pudding, flan, bugatsa, tiramisu and Greek yogurt topped with candied fruit).

HACKENSACK, N.J. When designer Marlene Wangenheim was called in to renovate a master bath, her client was looking to make the space beautiful and comfortable.
But Wangenheim, of Interiors by Design in Morristown, N.J., thought the 50-something client should think about the long term, and what she might need as she aged.
The result is an expansive, three-room luxury renovation, but with a secret: It can accommodate a person who uses a wheelchair or walker. Design choices like low shelves, an oversized shower and wider doorways mean that the homeowner can keep using the room even if she loses mobility.
This kind of accessible design is expected to become more popular as the giant baby boomer generation ages. Experts say even small design choices can help people stay in their homes in their later years which, according to polls, most want to do. And, as in the Kinnelon bathroom, the accommodations dont have to be obvious or look institutional.
One obstacle to the use of accessible design, however, is that a lot of homeowners resist the idea that they might ever become disabled. Often, theyll say, Theres nothing wrong with me; I dont need a grab bar.
Rather than raise the thought of disability, Wangenheim tries a softer approach, saying, How about we make it so you dont have to worry if youre still in the house in 10 or 15 years? And she paints the design choices as ideas that would make the homeowner comfortable now: for example, rounded edges so they dont bump into sharp corners if they use the bathroom in the middle of the night.
Stephen Melman, director of economic services at the National Association of Home Builders, agreed that many accessible design choices such as curbless showers and improved lighting make homes safer and more comfortable for able-bodied people, too.
If youre bathing a young child in the tub, would it be such a bad thing to have a grab bar and 50 years later, use it yourself? he asked.
Companies that make these products are increasingly trying to win over customers by making them look less institutional offering, for example, designer grab bars in finishes like brushed nickel or bronze, with detailing that mimics towel bars.
Maria Stapperfenne, president-elect of the National Kitchen and Bath Association, said that many products that were designed for accessibility have made it into the mainstream for example, curbless showers, improved kitchen lights and console bathroom vanities with space underneath.
