    Landscape Architecture – Design + Planning – AECOM – A …

    - December 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

AECOM's understanding of how peoples lives shape and are shaped by their environments has provided unique insights into the design and planning of places at all scales. Whether working on a multi-acre corporate landscape, a small urban park, or a year-round resort, our landscape architects and urban designers consider the site's physical surroundings and the needs of the client as well as the financial mechanisms, long-term political effects, implementation, and maintenance of the project.

Our practice is not simply focused on buildings and sites but on systems: the physical framework of streets, squares, parks, plazas and gardens that contribute to sense of place. Effective design requires careful integration of the myriad features of a particular site, from issues of aesthetics and to those of ecology, circulation, infrastructure, visual impacts, and economic viability. AECOM's interdisciplinary approach brings together the best creative and strategic thinkers to facilitate the reciprocal relationships between specific sites and surrounding context.

Our work takes place in a variety of settings, from established downtowns to new communities to university campuses. What all of our projects have in common is the need for practicality, quality, and attractiveness. Underlying all that we do is the ideal of making places where we ourselves and ultimately, many others will want to be.

    Landscape 2014: Waterwise trumps flowers

    - December 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Enjoy a photo gallery of some of the winners.

The tropical look, the woodsy look, the grass-is-good look -- all seem to have given way to the waterwise look in this year's crop of awards from the local chapter of the American Institute of Landscape Architects.

Handed out earlier this month, the chapter recognized big and little civic projects, such as the county government's Waterfront Park on Harbor Drive downtown opened in May and a little leftover freeway right-of-way garden, Tweet Street linear park completed in 2007.

But other winners signaled something else, said chapter president Patricia Trauth.

"Things have picked up," she said. "So you're seeing a lot more development going on."

She also said more submissions came from younger designers than in recent years.

Substantively, she said, many designs feature less ornamental and more drought-tolerant plant palettes.

"You're seeing a lot of businesses and institutions taking the time and money to really convert their landscapes into something that's more sustainable," she said.

That means more native grasses which also complement modern architecture.

Besides the winning projects, the chapter also granted its first stewardship award to county Supervisor Ron Roberts, an architect and leading proponent of the waterfront park.

McColl rescue of Ferguson shipyard a high point in year of ups and downs

    - December 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

In the world of business journalism, you are often asked whether the number of good news stories is increasing. It is not surprising to hear this question, with the issue of whether good or bad news stories are in the ascendancy being viewed, understandably, in a similar way to the needle on a barometer.

The fact of the matter is that, even in the depths of the 2008/09 downturn, there were plenty of good news stories from within the Scottish business community.

Often, these success stories were all the more impressive because the achievements were made against the odds, with the economy in dire shape.

And, even in the better times, there are bad news stories.

Unfortunately, for example, announcements of job losses by companies seem ever more like permanent features of the business landscape. There appears to be ever-less relief these days from such bad news even when the economy is supposedly faring a bit better.

In this regard, the question of whether the management consultants are just having too much of an impact often comes to mind.

When they are called into companies, it frequently seems that they are unlikely to resist the opportunity to advise taking out, say, a certain further percentage of the workforce. It is easy to make such a suggestion if you are not particularly familiar with the operations of a business and its requirements.

Such approaches, of top-down management seeking to squeeze efficiencies out of businesses, sadly often appear to figure more prominently than moves by companies to invest for future growth.

The highlight of the year, in terms of the good news stories, was Scottish engineering entrepreneur Jim McColl's rescue of the Ferguson shipbuilding yard at Port Glasgow.

When Ferguson, the last commercial shipbuilder on the Clyde, fell into administration, it was easy to fear the worst.

Merry Christmas in Missoula! A tree for the hill and its hikers

    - December 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

If you hear the tinkling of chimes and see a shimmer on boughs of green near the top of Waterworks Hill, walk a little closer.

Go ahead. George Ybarra, a metal sculptor who does much outdoor installation work, wants you to share in the festivities, the joy of the mountain.

"For this particular Christmas tree, I just again wanted to share in the season of the holidays and be able to give something back to the hikers and people who frequent the North Hills because the trail systems up there are so amazing," Ybarra said.

On Tuesday, he and his little girl, Zora, 10, added some more ornaments to the tree, one Ybarra had selected for the occasion. The small, round pine is a little ways off the trail, but it's not so far away it melts into the landscape.

It's the second year Ybarra has decorated a tree, but the Northside resident and artist has been walking up Waterworks ever since the peace sign was painted on a telephone relay tower on the hill. In 2001, the sign came down, but its footings are still in place on the way to the summit, and Ybarra saw an opportunity in the gap.

"After they took down the peace sign, I was kind of inspired about having these kind of art objects up in the North Hills," he said.

At first, he bolted art to fence posts, and then last year he decided to decorate a Christmas tree. He selected the one at the top of the Orange Street switchbacks, and he and Zora twisted aluminum into metal spirals for ornaments.

"It was real fun for her to work with me on that project 'cause I always like to do a craft project over the holidays," Ybarra said.

A group of ladies who walk Waterworks liked the tree, and they brought up ornaments and added to the display, too. Soon after Jan. 1, Ybarra cleared out the ornaments, and the Christmas tree returned to its simple, unadulterated glory.

A few months later, Ybarra began planning for this year's tree. For at least six months, he and Zora collected the lids from olive cans to use as decorations.

Family loses all in Christmas fire

    - December 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

Rodent are being blamed for a fire that ripped through a family's home on Christmas Day leaving them with nothing but the clothes on their backs.

Ian Merson said he felt numb after the fire tore through the semi-rural home at Puketapu, north of Hastings, as the family sat down to Christmas dinner at a relative's house.

He and his wife built the large family home 23 years ago where they raised their two children, who were home to celebrate a yuletide season now coloured by calamity.

"There's absolutely nothing - we've got no clothes on our back and nowhere to live," Merson said.

Nothing was salvageable as smoke damage ruined everything from the Christmas tree to Lego destined for future grandchildren.

Merson said the fire was thought to have started in a bathroom fan after rodents gnawed through wiring. "The bathroom's just melted. Everything's just smoke-damaged or unsalvageable, there's nothing left.

"My kids' family home is gone and they knew every square inch of this place."

He said the catastrophe was so painful he would not let his wife inside the house because "she wouldn't be able to handle it" and said he had struggled to drive through the farm gate.

Merson, who is insured, is a roofing contractor and also runs an apple orchard from the farm.

He had to dump stock yesterday at reduced prices because he was unable to water it.
