Alside Mezzo Windows Review – The Window Dog – Find the …

    - December 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

As we started writing this Alside Mezzo windows review we were impressed with the newest offering from Alside. This newly designed window addresses many of the shortcomings of the pervious model, the Alside Excalibur.

While the Alside Mezzo windows are new, Alside has been around for quite a while. Theyre a pretty large company that most consumers have never heard of. With 5 window manufacturing plants around the country their products are very widely distributed.

As you can see in the above picture, the Alside Mezzo windows have a slim frame which maximizes the glass area. This is a factor weve repeatedly mentioned in our replacement window reviews. This is an important factor that is often overlooked by consumers.

The Alside Mezzo window is designed to be the workhorse of their replacement window line. It will likely become the most popular window they offer.

Like just about all vinyl replacement windows, the Alside Mezzo window is custom made so the range of available options is pretty substantial.

As you can see there are many colors available on the Alside Mezzo window including interior and exterior color options.

Alside has always offered a very high quality screen standard with their windows and theyve continued that with the Mezzo. As you can see there, the screen is made of heavy duty extruded aluminum and the spline is on the inside to keep it out of the sun.

    How about energy efficiency?

The Alside Mezzo window can produce pretty solid ratings for a double hung window. They are in line with other recently designed double pane windows and a solid step above previous generation products. For example the Alside Mezzo window can meet or exceed the 2015 Energy Star guidelines for all regions of the country with double pane glass. Many older windows still require the expense of triple pane glass to hit these numbers.

New state building plans vetoed by Perry resurface

    - December 26, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Rising office rent prices in downtown Austin has lawmakers again pushing for two new state buildings after Gov. Rick Perry vetoed those construction plans in 2013.

One proposed 360,000-square-foot addition would be the first new office building in the Capitol complex since 2000. The Texas Facilities Commission says construction would cost $174 million but also get nearly one-fourth of the state's existing leases in Austin off the books.

Republican state Sen. Kevin Eltife told the Austin American-Statesman (http://bit.ly/1H1U9Pe ) that the plans make sense given escalating rent prices as the Austin economy flourishes.

Perry had cited waiting for a new master Capitol complex plan due in 2016 when he vetoed the construction two years ago. Supporters are now hoping for better luck under Gov.-elect Greg Abbott, who takes office in January.

Builder's Care project remodels Lehigh family's home

    - December 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    LEHIGH ACRES, FL -

The Salazar family of Lehigh Acres is home for the holidays, but they're coming home to a house much different than the one they left a week ago. An organization called Builders Care, along with Lennar Homes, chose the family for a remodel after hearing their story.

Jack Turner, Director of Construction at Lennar said: Last Tuesday afternoon, we were tearing out flooring and carpet and this afternoon we were cleaning and presenting the home.

Hugo and Maite Salazar were expecting a few changes here and there, but when they walked through their front door they barely recognized their own home.

The couple moved into the house nine years ago as newlyweds. They had two children Daniel and Daniella, but soon Daniella's health took a turn for the worse. The five-year-old is blind and uses a wheelchair. She also suffers from severe seizures and brain damage.

Just to wake up in the morning or to go to the store, everything is a challenge, explained Maite Salazar.

Their home had limited accessibility for Daniella, but now it has brand new wood floors and ramps. Builders Care also remodeled the home's kitchen, added landscaping, new furniture, fixed up the pool in the backyard, and even created a Batman themed room for Daniel.

It took more than 150 people a week to make it all happen. In the process, they changed the Salazar family's lives for the better and made this Christmas one they'll never forget.

Hugo Salazar said, Complete strangers come in and just bless your lives with their talents. It is an amazing, amazing feeling.

This Builders Care project marks $3 million spent in construction services since 2005.

After a quarter century, Upper Saucon still holds the line on taxes

    - December 25, 2014 by Mr HomeBuilder

    UPPER SAUCON TWP., Pa. -

The Upper Saucon Twp. Board of Supervisors presented residents with a holiday present Monday night when they approved an $8.5 million budget for 2015 that contains no real estate property tax increases.

The vote continued an amazing streak in the township where residents have not seen their property taxes rise in a quarter century.

"I hope we can continue doing this," said Chairman Stephen Wagner of the stagnation of the tax rate in the township, which last saw an increase in 1989.

With a rate of 1.4 mills, an owner with a property assessed at $200,000 pays about $273 a year in taxes, according to the township.

And while property owners should be encouraged by the news Monday night so too should township employees.

Supervisors voted to adopt a pay plan resolution for non-union employees that includes a 2.25 percent raise, although healthcare costs for employees will rise by about 1.5 percent.

In other business, supervisors adopted a resolution approving Jessica Skibicki as a deputy tax collector in the township for the remainder of the term held by current tax collector Deborah Herstine.

Skibicki would assume duties in the township in the event that Herstine would become incapacitated and unable to perform her duties, according to township Manager Thomas Bell.

Supervisors also approved payment of more than $303,000 to Recon Construction Services, Inc., for work completed on phase three of the Afton Village roadway rehabilitation project, and almost $63,000 to Alan Kunsman Roofing and Siding for work completed on the township's municipal building roof replacement project.
