SINGAPORE: The first stage of eradicating the rat infestation at Bukit Batok is complete, according to pest controllers working on the area. The operation had begun a week ago on Dec 18, and was initially projected to take longer due to rainy weather.
Mr Bernard Chan, manager of Star Pest Control on Wednesday (Dec 24) told Channel NewsAsia the first phase of the operation has concluded with "reasonable results". He said the rat population is now "under control" as only one camera out of 20 installed in the area has captured photos of rat activity.
Photos of rats were snapped between 7pm to 8pm on Tuesday. The infrared cameras, which were installed in areas of the forest where the rats are most active, takes photographs when movement is detected. At least one stray dog was photographed as well.
Mr Chan added that the team will be moving into phase two of the operation from Thursday afternoon. Pest controllers will monitor areas that did not record rat activity previously to ensure that the rat population does not migrate to other areas, he said.
"There will be 30 monitoring points using cameras or other devices, such as simple monitoring stations with non-poisonous food bait for the rats. We will deploy that in the evening and in the morning, if there are signs of the food being bitten by the rats, then we will know they are still present."
He added that infrared video cameras will be installed in phase two of the exercise. Phase 2 of the operationis expected to last a fortnight. "After these two weeks of the second phase, we will resume normal maintenance," Mr Chan said.

Bukit Batok rat infestation: Stage 1 of extermination complete
Albany, NY (PRWEB) December 24, 2014
During the holidays, many people are traveling to spend time with family and friends. This time of year can already be stressful and picking up bed bugs along the way can lead to even more stress once you return home. This is why the experts at Thomas Pest Services want to offer tips to help keep you, your family and home bed bug free this holiday season.
With an estimated 42 million people (according to AAA) traveling over the holiday seasons, it is no wonder that instances of bed bug infestations increase during this time of year. Airports, airplanes, hotels, bus stations, taxis, malls, and unfortunately, even Aunt Susies house are all places where travelers can pick up bed bugs and return home with them.
Bed bugs cannot jump or fly so instead they crawl onto or into peoples personal belongings (clothing, bags, purses, etc.) and hitchhike their way into a new home with new hosts to feed off of. Luckily, although bed bugs are small, they can be seen by the human eye and they do leave tell-tale signs that they are present. Some of the most common signs that bed bugs are invading an area include: black fecal spots on mattresses or bedding, red blood stains from bed bugs that have been crushed, and piles of exoskeletons on mattresses, floors, or other areas.
Bed bugs are difficult pests to prevent against, but there are some easy steps that travelers can take this holiday season to help limit their exposure to bed bugs. Bed bug prevention tips include:
-Keeping coats, luggage, and bags up off of the floors of public places, like airports and bus stations. -When first entering the accommodations that you will be staying in over the holidays, inspect under mattresses, box springs, in the cracks of wooden furniture, behind picture frames, along floorboards, and around electrical outlets for adult bed bugs or signs of their presence. -Keep suitcases up off of the ground. Do not leave even dirty clothing lying around on the ground. -Keep items that are not in use in sealed plastic bags. -When returning home from the holidays, immediately wash all clothing in hot water, and vacuum and wipe down all suitcases.
As was stated before, preventing a bed bug infestation can be very difficult and despite all precautions, these pests can unknowingly travel back home with us. The best thing to do at the first sign of an infestation is to immediately get professional help. The faster help is sought, the less time bed bugs have to reproduce and invade your home. At Thomas Pest Services, we offer chemical-free heat remediation services to eliminate very small to very large-scale bed bug infestations. Using heat to treat bed bugs is very effective, can be completed in one day, allows for quick re-entry, and kills all stages of bed bugs, from the tiny eggs to the larger adults.

Albany Pest Control Pros Offer Holiday Bed Bug Tips
An apparent electrical fire that broke out at an Orkin pest control storage building on College Street in Beaumont was contained Thursday morning, authorities said.
No injuries were reported.
The storage building contained paper records and pest traps, but no chemicals, Beaumont Fire Department Captain Earl White said.
The fire appeared to start by accident and seemingly originated from the building's electrical system, White said.
Beaumont firefighters in several engines responded at 8:58 a.m. to 5475 College Street in Beaumont.
By 9:30, firefighters were milling around and a department fan was blowing into the front side of the one-story, vinyl-sided building.
The building at College Street does contain chemicals, but the fire did not spread from the storage facility behind it, White said.
Beaumont police blocked eastbound traffic at Lindbergh Drive and westbound traffic at 23rd Street. Traffic is open in both directions.

Lorraine sneaked off to the Good Housekeeping Institute cookery school There, she learned how to wrap her turkey crown in bacon before cooking Was also taught how to parboil spuds the night before and cover with foil And she made perfect sprouts by frying them with chestnuts and shallots Three hours later, Lorraine had made herself a beautiful Christmas meal

Back to class: Lorraine Candy with her Good Housekeeping turkey
When I left home in Cornwall at 16 to come to work in London, I had scant culinary know-how because my mum didnt enjoy cooking. I dont blame her. I dont like it either its a bit of a bore, frankly.
Mum once threw Christmas lunch at the patio doors, she was so cross with the blackened offering. My dad, younger sister and I watched it all sadly slide down the glass, paper hats on heads, knives and forks in hands, knowing a corned-beef hash tin was about to be opened again.
Three decades later, although Ive never thrown a charred turkey at any patio doors in my house, Im afraid I am still not much better than her.
